Chapter 70
Facing Gu Ning’s serious invitation, Fang Fa couldn’t help but laugh: “Gu Ning, do you really need to be so formal? Even if you didn’t say anything, of course, I would still follow you.”
And so, it was decided naturally and happily.
Fang Fa suddenly asked, “But what about Zhuang Chen? Have you thought about recruiting her into your team? She has a wind-type special ability and is very skilled.”
After some hesitation, Gu Ning shook her head: “Not for now. She seems to have a close relationship with another group. Although I admire her, I still don’t know much about her background, and I’m afraid it might cause trouble.”
Fang Fa nodded: “Your concern is valid. Zhuang Chen’s identity is definitely not simple. The group that hijacked the plane were people she knew before—five of them, all with special abilities, and very arrogant.” He paused and added, “Zhuang Chen is a good person.”
Gu Ning knew he was referring to his injured foot, which made it hard for him to move. They must have faced many dangers in the days they were apart. Although Zhuang Chen had only known him for a short time and they were just traveling together, she could have easily abandoned him, but she didn’t, which spoke volumes about her character.
However, Zhuang Chen was close to White Wolf, and while White Wolf hadn’t clashed with them, their relationship was always somewhat delicate. Given Zhuang Chen’s background, Gu Ning had to be cautious.
Later, Gu Ning didn’t bring up the matter with Zhuang Chen. Instead, Zhuang Chen was the one who asked about Gu Ning’s plans: “Gu Ning, what are your plans for the future? You’re not planning to stay here forever, are you? I’m not trying to scare you, but this place, although safe for now, won’t remain so forever. Special ability users are a minority—one in a thousand, or even ten thousand. If a large wave of zombies surrounds us, a few special ability users won’t be enough.”
Zhuang Chen spoke very frankly: “Your parents probably aren’t special ability users. They need a more stable environment to live out their later years. The capital has the strongest military force, and there are definitely more special ability users there. If you come with us, I can guarantee the safety of you and your parents, both on the way and after we arrive. I admire you, Gu Ning, so I hope you’ll come to the capital with me.” She paused, then added, “I heard from White Wolf that you’ve met a group of people here who have taken in many children… Although it sounds cruel, the world is too dangerous for them now. Before you can protect others, you need to ensure your own survival first.”
Gu Ning nodded: “I know.”
Zhuang Chen patted her shoulder: “We’ll probably stay here for three or four more days. You can think it over during this time. If you decide to come with us, you can bring Fang Fa and your parents. Of course, other special ability users are welcome too.”
Gu Ning smiled: “Alright. I’ll give you an answer soon.”
Zhuang Chen also smiled, casually tucking her hair behind her ear: “Alright then, I’ll leave Fang Fa to you.”
Gu Ning nodded: “Mm.”
After saying goodbye to Fang Fa, Zhuang Chen left.
“You’re not going with her, are you?” Fang Fa asked as he came down.
Gu Ning smiled without confirming or denying. Zhuang Chen’s proposal was tempting, but there were things she couldn’t abandon.
Over there, White Wolf was asking Zhuang Chen a similar question: “I guess she won’t go with you.”
“She needs some time to think,” Zhuang Chen paused, “but I don’t think there’s much hope.”
“She probably thinks she’s the Virgin Mary, here to save the world,” Yin Sang suddenly sneered coldly.
Zhuang Chen glanced at her coldly, noticing that Yin Sang’s wound had already healed, and said with a cold laugh, “Looks like the wound healed too quickly, and you’ve forgotten the pain.”
Yin Sang immediately wanted to retort, but a casual glance from White Wolf shut her up.
Zhuang Chen looked at White Wolf, then at Yin Sang, and suddenly burst out laughing: “White Wolf, I really want to see you and Gu Ning together.”
White Wolf was stunned.
Yin Sang’s face instantly darkened.
Zhuang Chen laughed and nodded: “It would be quite a sight.”
White Wolf sneered: “Looks like Yi Shaoqing isn’t here, and you’re bored.”
Zhuang Chen actually nodded, thoughtfully saying, “Seems like it. At least he’s not as boring as you guys.” She stood up from her seat, her long legs carrying her out as she said, “Tell your water-type special ability user to give me two buckets of water. I need to take a bath.”
After a round of enthusiastic self-introductions.
The atmosphere in the hall subtly shifted.
Zhang Xiaobai sat next to Fang Fa, smiling innocently as he asked, “Hey, Fang Fa, what’s your relationship with Gu Ning? How did you meet? How long have you known each other?”
Fang Fa, not thinking too much about it, and wanting to get along with them, explained how he met Gu Ning in detail.
“Oh, so you met after the apocalypse,” Zhang Xiaobai caught the key point, exchanging meaningful glances with the others, and the atmosphere noticeably warmed up.
Cheng Ming was severely injured. Although Gu Ning used her healing ability to treat his wounds, he had lost too much blood and remained unconscious. He had briefly woken up in the car but fell back asleep soon after.
By three in the afternoon, they started preparing dinner.
Huang Mengyao was in charge of starting the fire, while Zhong Xu was responsible for creating water.
Zhong Xu was probably the most hardworking person, continuously creating water for daily use since they returned. Because there were women present, the soldiers gave up the idea of showering together in the yard and took turns carrying buckets into the shower room.
Gu Ning had collected a pile of men’s clothing from the supermarket, and the soldiers excitedly picked out clothes that fit them. Unfortunately, since the apocalypse broke out during summer, most of the clothes in the stores were summer wear. The soldiers scrubbed off layers of accumulated dirt, washed their faces, and after putting on new clothes, felt like their noses were finally clear. The smelly clothes they used to wear without a second thought were now something they refused to put on. In the end, they came up with a solution: wash the clothes and have Huang Mengyao dry them with fire.
The kids finally found something to do, volunteering to wash the soldiers’ dirty clothes. They gathered around basins, washing the clothes with great enthusiasm, not minding the dirt and stench. Their obedience was heartwarming, and the first round of wash water was completely muddy.
Later, when they saw Huang Mengyao using fireballs to dry the clothes, Zhuang Chen, who had come to visit, found it amusing and started using her wind ability to blow on the hanging clothes. The kids were thrilled, their faces red with excitement, clapping and cheering loudly.
On the other side, Gu Mama was preparing dinner. Zhang Yang, originally from the kitchen squad, was more skilled with the big spoon than Gu Mama. Several soldiers helped out, and Gu Mama mostly directed, with the soldiers eagerly doing the work for her. Gu Papa, seeing this, said to Gu Ning with a smile, “I never knew your mom had the air of a commander.”
Gu Ning had collected supplies from an entire supermarket, so they had everything they needed. Whenever someone asked for something, she could immediately produce it from her space. A group of kids followed her around, marveling at her abilities.
If they were short on chairs or tables, Third Brother would use his earth-type ability to create them, making the most of their resources.
The yard was bustling with adults and children, creating a scene so lively it felt like they had returned to modern times. Everyone’s face unconsciously broke into smiles, enjoying this rare moment of peace and happiness in the apocalypse.
Gu Ning watched the children running around the yard, their faces filled with innocent joy, and said to Zhuang Chen beside her, “Although I can’t guarantee I can protect them until they grow up, I will do my best.”
Zhuang Chen’s smile faltered slightly, and she sighed with undisguised regret: “So, this is your answer to me.”
Gu Ning smiled: “Yes. This is my answer.”
“Actually, I don’t quite understand,” Zhuang Chen hesitated but still asked, “You were abandoned by those people in the car before. Why are you now…”
“Because they’re not those people,” Gu Ning looked at Zhuang Chen, her eyes shining, “I have no doubt that if the same thing happened to these people, they would save me without hesitation. My parents are still here, and I have so many friends now. I’m doing well.”
Zhuang Chen was taken aback, then raised an eyebrow: “So, you’ve forgiven those people?”
“Forgiven?” Gu Ning suddenly smiled at Zhuang Chen, “If you happen to run into those people on the road, please, for my sake, make sure they don’t have an easy time.”
Zhuang Chen was stunned again, then burst into hearty laughter.
Gu Ning also smiled slightly, her gaze turning to the horizon.
She would never forget the despair she felt when that car drove away, nor the pain she endured when the zombie virus took hold.
Forgive?
Gu Ning’s smile turned cold.
Perhaps she might consider forgiving them when they paid with their lives.
