Chapter 77: Ambush
East of Igewent, downstream of the Iron Mud River, the flooded dock.
In the morning, the tranquility of the flooded dock was shattered by intense gunfire. The residents looked towards the distant warehouse area in astonished silence, with expressions of obvious unease as they speculated whether there was yet another gang conflict erupting.
At that moment, a fierce ambush was unfolding in the warehouse district, but the roles of the ambushers and the ambushed were somewhat different from what some had anticipated.
As members of the Crimson Eucharist were lurking in the shadows, guns trained on the warehouse, they waited calmly for their prey to walk into the trap. They had no idea that the first shots in this anticipated fierce battle would not be fired by them. When the gunfire erupted from behind them, bullets whistled in at various strange angles, piercing the bodies of the Crimson Eucharist members hiding in their ambush point—the dilapidated brick building. These bullets originated from other buildings behind them.
Outside the ambush circle of the Crimson Eucharist, members of the Hunter team had positioned themselves at the high points of various buildings, accurately zeroing in on the locations where the Eucharist members were hiding. They had encompassed the Eucharist within a larger ambush circle while the latter was still in a state of ambush.
The cannibals had not expected that after lying in wait for the entire morning, they would suddenly find themselves becoming the prey at the moment actual combat commenced.
When Elena fired the first shot, the already-prepared members of the Hunter team began firing at several hiding spots of the Eucharist members. In the first round of shooting, four Eucharist members exposed to the Hunters’ line of sight went down.
The remaining members, realizing they had been discovered, scrambled for cover within the building to return fire. However, due to their adversaries’ advantageous terrain and the initial loss of several members, the Eucharist found themselves at a severe disadvantage in the gunfight.
“Hmph… it really does look just like this map. Those guys’ hideouts, fire points, and lookout spots… everything is clearly marked. Following this map, it’d be hard not to have an advantage…”
On the third floor of a building, Gregor watched as the Eucharist members struggled to lift their heads, feeling a sense of amazement. As he spoke, he glanced at the map spread out on the ground beside him. Their ability to seize the initiative and fully capitalize on advantages was largely due to this kind of map.
This map had been delivered to the An Yin Bureau around ten o’clock this morning via a flower delivery appointment, a situation that had occurred last month, which had resulted in the Burton case. Therefore, this time, the An Yin Bureau did not delay in examining the accompanying information in the flower delivery.
What they did not expect was that this time, the information hidden within the flowers was not just about the Eucharist’s strongholds, but an entire map detailing the Eucharist’s military deployments.
Upon receiving this map, Gregor and the others quickly understood the urgency of the situation, immediately sending a telegram to the bureau chief, who was not present, requesting to launch an offensive. After receiving approval, they rushed to the flooded dock with urgency. After confirming the authenticity of the two lookouts based on the map’s description, Gregor stealthily proceeded to ambush the members of the Eucharist, catching them completely off guard.
“Heh, could it be that there’s a mole in that mysterious organization within the Eucharist? This level of detailed intelligence is hard to come by. Although it feels like I’m being used as a tool, as long as I can take out a few cannibals, it won’t be in vain.”
As Gregor spoke, he pulled out the sword embedded in the ground, glancing out of the window towards the distant clock tower.
“It seems like there’s a leader up there. Elena, be ready to support. Don’t spend all your time praying while shooting.”
“This is from the Church, that can’t be changed. And right now, I’m a Hunter team member, not just a nun,” Elena replied, rolling her eyes at Gregor. Gregor smiled in response, donned his mask, grasped his sword, and leaped out of the window, swiftly traversing the rooftops of the warehouse area, heading towards the abandoned small clock tower.
…
Gunfire rang out within the flooded dock, while at that very moment atop the abandoned clock tower, an atmosphere of urgency and fear prevailed.
“This is bad… How can this suddenly happen! How did the enemy manage to attack us from behind? Where are the lookouts? Where’s the signal? Where did they all go?”
At the top of the clock tower, Colif pacing back and forth behind cover was filled with anxiety. He could not comprehend how the situation had turned so dire so suddenly.
It was clear they had been waiting in ambush, so how could their leader have been taken down with a single shot? Now, their entire team was being suppressed, and the situation was critical.
Colif stomped his feet in frustration, while at his feet, Buck lay on the ground, shot in the head, bl**d pooling around him, silent.
“Ugh… something must have gone wrong. Right now, we need to hold the line.” After glancing at Buck, Colif took a deep breath and hurried to a corner where he opened a pre-prepared box containing his weapons and armor.
As Colif prepared for battle, the red gem atop the staff in Buck’s hand emitted a faint red glimmer at that moment.
…
Gregor was racing across the rooftops, rapidly approaching the distant clock tower.
Behind a window at the lower end of the clock tower, a lookout for the Eucharist, upon seeing someone charging directly from the roof, immediately aimed and fired, ready to unleash bullets at Gregor. However, observing the enemy’s movements, a gleam of silver flashed in Gregor’s eyes, and his spiritual energy began to dissipate, causing his speed to surge.
The lookout pulled the trigger, but at a distance of thirty to forty meters, Gregor’s swift movement ensured the bullets missed entirely.
“What the…”
Just as that lookout marveled at the development, Gregor burst into the clock tower through the window, directly beheading the unprepared lookout with a swift strike.
The cut at the lookout’s decapitated neck was clean, slicing through the spine with precision, while a faint silver glow pulsed along the blade in Gregor’s hand.
“k*ll him!”
After breaking into the clock tower, Gregor found himself at the center of the enemy formation. He instantly felt the murderous intent coming from all directions. In an instant, enemies came pouring down the stairway, and Gregor fixed his gaze on the stairs.
Swinging his blade, Gregor ascended the stairway, striking down the enemies who tried to block his path with lethal precision. They were rendered powerless, unable to fight back. Some attempted to use the bl**d-Eating Sigil for a last ditch effort, but the moment they drew the sigil, Gregor swiftly severed their wrists.
Gregor’s agility and rapid reactions left the lookout far behind. The blade, glowing with silver light, sliced through human bodies as easily as cutting through vegetables. Even when severing tough bones, he faced no resistance, showing no signs of chipping.
Thus, Gregor climbed higher, cutting down nearly three or four foes, finally reaching the top of the clock tower, only to be greeted immediately by an axe.
“d*e! Government dog!”
Atop the clock tower, Colif had prepared to engage as he saw Gregor arriving. He donned an iron helmet and several makeshift iron pieces of armor for protection, swinging a two-handed axe towards the newly arrived Gregor. Observing this, Gregor quickly raised his sword to block, but in the instant the sword met the axe, he was shocked to discover the immense strength behind the blow. With a resounding clang, his sword was jolted from his hand, and he was thrown back, crashing into the wall.
“Ugh… it’s a Thirster…”
In terms of strength, Gregor clearly found himself at a disadvantage against Colif…
“Haha… you’re finished!”
Colif rasped, swinging the axe again towards Gregor, who skillfully dodged while leaning against the wall. The axe struck the wall instead, kicking up dust and becoming lodged deeply within it, causing Colif’s heart to race.
“cr*p…”
Seizing the opportunity, Gregor drew a dagger from his waist, gripping it tightly as he lunged towards Colif’s exposed neck. Colif attempted to evade, but Gregor’s speed was even faster.
Just then, a staff swept through the air, striking precisely against Gregor’s dagger, sending it flying. Still masked, Gregor stared in shock at the source of the staff.
There, standing tall in a perfectly tailored suit, was the middle-aged man Buck, leaning on his staff. His expression was furious, the wound on his head no longer bleeding, while the red gem in his hand was radiating a dazzling crimson light.
