Chapter 8

1.

“Supernatural Task Force, joining…?”

An unexpected invitation from Himari.

As soon as I got home, I began contemplating whether or not to join a club, something I had been delaying until now.

At the park, Himari and I had various conversations, most of which revolved around the Supernatural Task Force, my Hero activities, and inquiries about myself.

And the conclusion of those discussions ultimately boiled down to one thing: to join the Supernatural Task Force.

“Admittedly, it is a compelling choice.”

Given Millennium’s nature, there were various options available, but the clubs that had directly invited me to join were the Engineering Department and Supernatural Task Force—just two places.

I did consider other clubs.

Like Seminar, Veritas, C&C—all of them were interesting clubs.

However,

“The clubs most suited to my current situation are the Engineering Department and the Supernatural Task Force.”

Clubs that allow me to carry out my Hero activities as a student.

That was the most appropriate choice for my situation.

Both clubs had clear advantages and disadvantages.

The former, as Hibiki mentioned, allows me to conceptualize, create, and further improve equipment. I would be able to exchange opinions quickly with Utaha and Hibiki, the two main creators.

The problem is… I don’t possess any knowledge about “engineering,” and there’s the question of whether I can balance club activities while being a Hero.

“Probably, those two will accommodate me since they know the truth about me. But…”

Does joining the Engineering Department outweigh delaying club activities for my Hero activities?

It would essentially ruin my life as a student and a Hero.

“If that happens, it would be putting the cart before the horse.”

On the other hand, the latter is more closed off to the public. With only two members—Himari and Amy, there’s less concern about information leaks, and I can concentrate more on my Hero activities. Moreover, I can directly receive help from Himari and Amy.

This part is a definite advantage—support from an all-knowing individual and an exceptional field agent.

The downside of the Supernatural Task Force is that it’s under Seminar, and the information I currently have is extremely limited. Also, there are occasional club activities.

“Well, actually, this part isn’t really a downside.”

Seminar-related issues will be handled by Himari, who’s the student council president and doesn’t get along with Rio, and our club duties somewhat align with my Hero activities.

Dekagrammaton, Gematria, all kinds of supernatural phenomena.

Fundamentally, anything threatening the safety of Kiburatos and its citizens. Thus, for me, pursuing and studying such occurrences could be seen as an extension of my Hero activities.

Moreover… I do have slight expectations.

Regarding myself.

“Why did I fall into the Blue Archive?”

“Why is there a mosaic over my name?”

“Why did I possess the body of a Millennium Mob?”

“What is the origin of my abilities?”

Curiosities that I hadn’t paid attention to so far.

Perhaps by joining and participating in the Supernatural Task Force, I might uncover these secrets someday.

I get the vague feeling of that.

“…With that, I’ve reached my conclusion.”

As I continued to contemplate, the scales in my heart gradually tipped to one side. Though I feel sorry for Hibiki, I should tell her I won’t be joining the Engineering Department.

It was already late evening, but I quickly sent a Momotalk message to Hibiki.

She’s probably awake, since she was earlier.

[Me – Hibiki, are you awake?]

[Nekozuka Hibiki – Yes. What’s the matter?]

As expected, a prompt reply.

I hesitated for a moment before apologizing.

[Me – It’s about the club. I’ve received a good offer, so I’ve decided to join a different club instead of the Engineering Department. I’m sorry.]

[Nekozuka Hibiki – Yeah. It’s okay.]

[Nekozuka Hibiki – It’s disappointing, but there’s nothing we can do. Still, I’d like you to visit the Engineering Department often. It’s enjoyable to talk to you.]

Blushing, how embarrassing.

While smiling bitterly, I typed out a message.

[Me – Yes. As an apology, I’ll buy some delicious pastries and visit the Engineering Department later.]

[Nekozuka Hibiki – Okay, thank you for that.]

You know, she’s a genuinely kind person. Her tone may sound a bit cold, but she really cares for people, like a dog would.

Even her tactful nature to not even ask about which club I’ll be joining.

I really need to buy her some delicious pastries when we meet next.

Immediately after, I sent a Momotalk message to Himari too.

[Me – I accept the offer. I’ll join.]

[Akeboshi Himari – I’ve been waiting for your response. ^^]

2.

The next morning, guided by Amy who visited my house, I arrived at the Supernatural Task Force’s clubroom.

“This is the clubroom of the Supernatural Task Force.”

“Hmm.”

“How do you feel? What’s your impression of visiting the safest and most secretive place in Millennium?”

“Interesting. And… this is quite a bothersome place to visit. Why are the paths so complicated?”

“Hohoho, is that so? That’s a relief. If you feel that way, then we’ve achieved our design goal.”

“Is that so.”

In the game, I thought the paths were like a labyrinth, completely shrouded in secrecy, but evidently, they were even more simplified in the game. It felt like I was indirectly experiencing a Spider-Man caught in one of Mysterio’s illusions. Why make it this complicated?

…And later, I’m supposed to memorize this path?

“How am I supposed to memorize this?”

While I gave Himari a look, she giggled as if amused by something.

“Alright, let’s begin, shall we?”

She tapped the hologram briefly, and Himari sent one over to Amy, who had casually taken off her coat saying it was hot, and to me who stood there dumbfounded.

Only one concise sentence was written on the hologram.

A phrase that completely defied my expectations.

[New Member Welcome Ceremony]

“?!”

What is this? What is this really?

While I stared at Himari with a bewildered expression wondering what this was, she didn’t notice because she was grinning broadly while operating drones.

She quickly began arranging various foods she’d somehow prepared beforehand on the table.

I must have imagined it, but during this process, I heard her mutter something like, “My first party, I’m a little excited. When I first joined the club, I didn’t get to try it…”

Furthermore, Amy was helping her arrange the cutlery—did you know about it too?

What exactly is happening?

I was sure we were going to discuss important matters like the club or Hero activities…

Am I taking this too seriously?

Though there weren’t many serious episodes in Blue Archive, most of them went like this.

As if realizing my wavering gaze, Himari cleared her throat loudly and, with a somewhat blushing expression, placed her hand on her chest confidently.

“Hem! Today… we have a new member joining, so it’s only natural to have a celebratory party, right?”

“Ah, yes.”

“Hohoho, feel free to be a little more excited. You have the honor of being celebrated by me—the delicate flower atop Millennium’s cliffs, the genius girl with illness who everyone envies. When you think about it that way, Mr. New Member, you’re quite the lucky one—”

“Leader, isn’t it hot in here? Can we turn on the air conditioner?”

“Amy…! I’m trying to make an important speech! And the food will get cold if we turn on the air conditioning!”

“It’s only because you’re heating up yourself unnecessarily, Leader.”

“It’s just that Amy has a high body temperature! Don’t you agree, Mr. New Member?”

“…”

Ah.

In that moment, I suddenly realized.

How I’ve been treating these two.

“Somewhere along the way, I’ve been wary of both of you.”

Is it because you two were the first to uncover my true identity?

Or because you’re so brilliant that I can’t easily figure out?

Whatever the reason, my mindset had subtly shifted from trusting the Supernatural Task Force to seeing it as a tool to be used.

This is wrong.

The club activities I imagine are not about using or being used, right?

‘How foolish of me to have thought otherwise.’

As the tangled threads of thought unraveled in my mind, my perception of the previously bewildering situation changed.

Instead of seeing a random welcome party by the two of them,

I began to see two people who were genuinely trying their best to welcome me.

“……I guess I haven’t quite grown up into an ‘adult,’ just like everyone else yet.”

I suddenly understood the role of a ‘teacher.’

It wasn’t something I couldn’t reach after all.

In that very moment, a smile involuntarily crept onto my lips, and laughter burst out.

“Haha!”

Perhaps startled by my sudden laughter, the eyes of the two who were arguing widened.

Regardless of how they interpreted my reaction, it became a turning point. The atmosphere of the clubroom shifted drastically,

to a much more positive direction.

Himari chattered on joyfully with a self-assured expression, and Amy, in what I assumed was her way of greeting, placed food into my mouth with her characteristic blank face.

And I, too, laughed and chatted happily along with them.

All in all,

It was a successful club welcome ceremony.

3.

“This is D.U Lostway West. Transmitting to Valkyrie headquarters. Requesting support immediately! I repeat, this is D.U Lostway West! Requesting immediate emergency support! Please send as many reinforcements as possible… Damn, here they come! –!”

Click.

Crackle… crackle…

“… So, she’s finally completely broken free. Kosaka Wakamo.”

“So, what will you do from here, Yukino?”

“…”

Yukino, the girl called by that name, looked up at the sky without answering.

The gloomy sky, filled with clouds that seemed ready to unleash heavy rain, was as if predicting their dark future.

The Student Council President had gone missing, and the SRT was on the verge of shutting down.

At this rate, they would lose the name “FOX Squad” and be scattered under the control of the General Student Council.

The ominous future wasn’t perceived by Yukino alone. The other children seemed to have sensed it too, their faces darkened.

What should they do from now on?

It was a difficult question.

If it was a simple matter of carrying out an operation, then it would’ve been easier to make a decision. However, now it’s not an operation.

It’s reality.

A profoundly miserable and unfortunate reality.

Even she, praised as the perfect squad leader for SRT and her comrades, was ultimately just an ordinary person powerless against the overwhelming reality.

Yukino couldn’t answer the soldiers’ questions.

“…I don’t know what to do anymore.”

“Yukino… ”

“This situation wasn’t in the manual. I don’t know what choice to make, what judgment to pass.”

Not knowing, she was utterly powerless.

Blaming herself, she concealed tears of despair amid the falling rain droplets, when suddenly,

a voice reached her ears.

“The answer… I’ll tell it to you.”

A familiar yet inexplicably strange voice.

Like the slithering tongue of a cunning snake, it sent an unsettling reverberation.

Yukino turned her head toward the direction of the voice.

There she saw—

“—Shiranui Kaya.”

Shiranui Kaya, the Head of Security for the General Student Council, was standing there.

“Long time no see. All of you members of the FOX Squad.”

“You… What are you doing here? Wasn’t SRT’s punishment already decided?”

“Correctly speaking, it’s still under discussion. Opinions are still split internally. It’s really…”

She placed her finger on her cheek and slowly opened her narrow eyes before continuing with a conceited tone.

“…so foolish.”

An abrupt change that made everyone in the FOX Squad, including Yukino, widen their eyes.

Then, as if returning to her normal self, Kaya spoke openly about her concealed intentions.

“Members of the FOX Squad, I have a proposition for you.”

“A proposition you can’t refuse.”

At that moment,

Yukino instinctively felt that something was wrong, but as Kaya’s words continued, all her concerns seemed to disappear.

“I’m going to bring back your SRT for you.”
