Chapter 839: The Pawn Being Used
Lin Nuo was a master of killing; with a single strike, he wiped out the opponent completely, leaving no trace behind.
The ground was littered with corpses, and though there wasn’t much blood at first, soon enough, it flowed from the bodies.
The multitude of swords flew around and quickly returned to his hand in unison.
This technique of integrating countless swords into one, wielded so effortlessly, truly exemplified the prowess of the talented Knight Lin; he made breaking through the enemy look like a piece of cake.
She remembered witnessing this multi-sword technique used by an immortal who could ride the clouds when she was a child. Many years later, seeing it again from Lin Nuo reminded her of her childhood dreams.
He truly was the Knight Lin, having cultivated to such a high realm that he could rival an immortal.
Absolutely formidable!
He couldn’t rest easy until he cleared the area completely.
After dealing with one wave, there were still some left — those who were watching over the fox people.
They were dumbfounded, realizing their comrades were gone, leaving them in a state of shock.
What on earth was happening? What was this sword-separating technique? Was it really that amazing?
Oh no, we need to run!
These few people bolted, completely disregarding the fox people, prioritizing their own lives.
Of course, running in front of Lin Nuo was like trying to dream of flying to the moon. How could they possibly escape?
In the blink of an eye, they met their end as well.
More corpses lay on the ground, a truly tragic scene.
Then there were the fox people.
Lin Nuo approached them, with Luo Xiaoxue following closely behind, nearing these imprisoned foxes.
They were bound in shackles, no longer snarling and baring their teeth at Lin Nuo, instead hissing softly.
Their eyes were dull, filled with despair. The chains locked tightly around them, awaiting their doom, preparing to leave this world.
Unfortunately, with their limbs shackled, they couldn’t even embrace their comrades before departing this life.
They had witnessed Lin Nuo’s strength, witnessing him obliterate their oppressors; how could they dream of escaping from his grip?
All they could do was wait for death.
“Knight Lin, you’re going to kill them…?” Luo Xiaoxue looked at the helpless fox people, her heart aching.
“Why would I bother killing them?”
Lin Nuo retracted his “Demon Sword,” staring at the few fox people.
Among them were both large and small, male and female. The smaller ones were about Ruo’er’s age, while the older ones were around Ruo’er’s parents’ age, not yet even senior.
One little fox, resembling Ruo’er, was a brown-furred loli fox — certainly cute and beautiful, though not as much as Ruo’er, but still quite pleasant to the eye.
“There’s been an announcement stating that you fox people are causing trouble and that everyone should be wary of you. So, tell me, what kind of heinous acts have you committed to reach such a point?”
Lin Nuo said, but the fox people kept their heads down, responding not a word, utterly devoid of spirit, steeped in profound dejection.
It seemed they were already resigned, waiting for Lin Nuo’s blade to end their lives.
In that moment, Lin Nuo drew his sharp sword, and they seemed to realize what was about to happen, closing their eyes in fear.
Luo Xiaoxue’s heart ached, clearly seeing that Knight Lin was about to bring down his blade to end their lives. After all, these fox demons were still demons; it was not uncommon for such cultivators to slay demons when questioning them.
The sword fell.
In the air, the shape of the blade descended, and if blood were to burst forth, corpses would fall across the wilderness.
But…
Instead of ending their lives, the blade sliced down and shattered the shackles binding them, their limbs now feeling light and unbound.
No killing.
“This…”
One middle-aged fox was astonished. From his appearance, he seemed to be the patriarch among this group of fox people. He raised his head, a glimmer of color returning to his eyes, filled with confusion.
He couldn’t understand, thinking the falling sword would mean death, yet he was still alive.
“Why…?”
He questioned quietly.
“The ones wanting to capture you are my enemies; the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I have no reason to kill you. Now that the shackles are gone, doesn’t it feel much easier?”
“But aren’t you a cultivator, a hero…? And we are the ones troubling the public…”
“Who the hell is a hero? I wouldn’t have aimed my sword at you if you weren’t troubling the public. Now then, tell me, why are they trying to capture you? Have you realized and decided to rise against humans?”
Lin Nuo asked, aware that he had a gap in information. He remembered that in his previous life at this moment, he was still fleeing, not having seen the full picture of the storyline.
Furthermore, the demon clan wasn’t exactly a monumental issue; who pays them any mind?
“Hmm…”
The fox man hesitated, half believing Lin Nuo’s words.
Lin Nuo continued:
“Let’s put it this way. There’s a hunt for the demon clan going on everywhere, and I see you have no way to survive. If you get caught, you’ll die. I can help you; you can only choose to trust me.”
Lin Nuo often favored this negotiating style; no other choice, just trust me.
This usually worked wonders on those whose backs were against the wall.
The fox people pondered, realizing it indeed was the case; they had no other escape route.
The fox man sighed, saying:
“Though we are demons, most of us coexist peacefully with humans, not infringing upon their lives. They wouldn’t attack us. But about ten days ago, everything changed. Some of our kind were cursed, lost their sanity, and began attacking humans. As a result, humans viewed us as threats and began a crackdown on us.”
“What curse? Who did it?”
“Not sure… but I feel it’s related to them…”
The fox man pointed towards the bodies of the mixed army sprawled on the ground, including members from Tianyang Sect, Dong Wei, and the government soldiers.
“They easily knew our location and quickly captured us. Those captured fox people are paraded as spectacle and then imprisoned, ultimately executed in public. The common folk cheer on, proclaiming it as slaying demons and ridding us of evils…”
“Given that, how have you lived until today?”
“They take turns killing; it’s no trouble at all for them. We’ve just been fortunate not to be picked, but today, our luck ran out. It’s a constant cycle of capture and execution, with the crowd always cheering.”
“Ah, I understand now. This is a method of control, stabilizing the populace’s hearts by capturing and executing you fox demons to prove their own power. But I believe those executed are all deemed useless; the valuable ones are used for their own purposes — that’s the nature of Dong Wei and Tianyang Sect. Yet, out of so many demons, they settle on you fox demons; talk about luck.”
Lin Nuo said flatly, fully aware of this pathetic scheme.
Thus, fox people were merely pawns, exploited to consolidate Dong Wei’s prestige among the common folk.
How tragic.
“Hmm… you’re right. We fox demons are the most humble within the fox clan, yet not the worst among demon kinds. The main issue is that something happened to the most noble fox clan, the Immortal Foxes.”
