The Rao family of China, though a recently established house, had already begun to produce exceptional ability users. In a world where a single mind-reading supernatural ability user could make industrial espionage obsolete, the Rao family inevitably drew excessive scrutiny, and this applied equally to Rao Ha, known as the heir to the Rao family.
“Hmm?”
Perhaps for that reason, Rao Ha noticed immediately. The woman, whose entire body shimmered with gold, turned her head in recognition of a familiar sensation.
Even though Haeundae was a ruin, it still served as a tourist attraction—but it was eerily empty that day.
Though it might have been understandable given she’d never been here before, Rao Ha’s golden eyes fixed firmly in place, activating her ability.
Her special ability depended on the color of her irises—Maan (Demon Eyes). When her eyes turned gold, her power manifested as “Gold,” which could also translate into the most valuable currency.
Her basic ability when her eyes turned gold—discerning value—revealed something strange. Behind the collapsed buildings lay an anomaly, a number that shouldn’t belong in a place as deteriorated as this city. The obvious implication was that whatever carried an unusual value didn’t belong here.
And more often than not, that meant it was a person.
Rao Ha, whose expression rarely shifted from her default impassive demeanor, had identified someone following her but didn’t bother asking who they were or if they were friend or foe.
She didn’t even waste time asking their purpose. Instead, flexing her legs, she leaped with all her might.
“Hello!”
The masked individual appeared startled but quickly countered Rao Ha’s inhuman agility with a powerful kick straight to her solar plexus using her heels.
After bending deeply in a polite gesture, Rao Ha responded with an “Hmm!” before using her heel to strike the back of his head.
“Very polite, you!”
There was no need for her to use any other Maan abilities or even the powers bestowed by her “Gold” state.
The scion of one of the leading supernatural ability families of the continent didn’t need anything more than her physical prowess. With her bright words and tranquil demeanor, she stepped on the head of her tracker, who was bowing deeply, and pressed down until his face was crushed, before walking away.
Suppressing other supernaturals purely with physical capabilities—this was the Rao family, the closest China had come to raising warriors who could be called ‘unyielding ones.’
“Shall we go to the place where a fierce struggle happened in the once-popular sky lounge of Haeundae?”
Due to the Haeundae battle, the sky lounge was now more of a derelict building than a lounge. However, the reason the girl aspiring to be a journalist wanted to visit that place was to capture the battle’s traces for her school newspaper, injecting her own commentary.
They had already decided to split up and go where each one wanted to, so the only ones near the aspiring journalist Kim Da-seul were Kim Ha-neul and Han Ye-seul.
For Han Ye-seul, who didn’t care much where she accompanied Kim Ha-neul, she nodded first, and Kim Ha-neul eventually nodded as well after gazing momentarily at the ruined buildings.
Their plan was to interview famous individuals since no famous person agreed to be interviewed by students at school.
But Kim Da-seul’s ambitious plan immediately hit a snag when an unknown woman blocked their path.
“Excuse me? Is there anything we can do for you?”
Unlike Kim Da-seul who politely asked if the woman needed something, the boy appeared with a bright light already in his hands.
Not out of malice, but because he had already recognized the identity of the mysterious person who had suddenly appeared before them.
“I was trying to avoid you as much as possible, but we’ve always been competitors. Still, we were from the same hometown.”
The woman with murky tones and brown pigtails, who had just thrown her glasses to the ground, and then swiftly untied her hair, looked more like a ravenous beast.
Unlike Kim Ha-neul, who possessed various skills, this woman relied solely on raw power to maintain her role as a protagonist in a world shaped by abilities.
Currently, she was the leader of the criminals the Association was desperately trying to capture due to the ongoing city terrorism incidents.
“But now, I don’t want to fight you for returning to my hometown. I only want what you currently possess because that’s why I wanted to return to my hometown.”
Her appearance, now without the glasses and untied pigtails, mimicked that of a starving beast that had survived years of famine but was now finally within reach of its prey.
It didn’t matter what Kim Ha-neul was about to lose, nor whether the woman sought a negotiation.
One doesn’t negotiate with a beast. And no human would consent to letting a beast take what it desired.
The boy transformed the light into a sharp sword and grasped it in his right hand. Just as ancient hunters carried weapons for beastly prey.
“Let’s save the trip to the sky lounge for another day. We probably won’t be able to make it today… And Ye-seul, this woman is beyond reason, so could you go with Da-seul? This area seems dangerous.”
“Okay, please be careful!”
The woman waited patiently while Han Ye-seul escorted the other girl to safety. When they were far enough, the boy illuminated his created sword and prepared fully.
In the blink of an eye, the sword of light clashed against the invisible force produced by the woman’s fists—capable of summoning a typhoon.
An intangible force of a storm versus an intangible force of light. Forces that should never clash were meeting, brought forward by their wielders.
The mere aftereffects of their clash were enough to collapse the already dilapidated buildings, with some structures even splitting in half.
But neither of them blinked, their focus never leaving the other. One blink could mean the end of the fight. Their battle had just truly begun.
“Eeehhh?! Is it alright to leave them there and run?”
“It should be fine.”
Thanks to the time Kim Ha-neul had given them, the two girls were able to escape safely. Nevertheless, they still trembled at the loud sounds from afar.
The sounds of what must have been one of the biggest storms the region had seen were emanating from where Kim Ha-neul and the woman were fighting.
The sheer magnitude of the sounds defied belief for two classmates who were supposed to be in the same class after this school trip.
Understanding to some degree the extent of Kim Ha-neul’s power, the two couldn’t help but be astonished. With her Radiance ability in full swing, her movements were comparable to lightning itself.
Yet, the fact that loud clashing sounds continued to emanate from her fight indicated that her opponent possessed an ability forcing them to exchange heavy attacks.
Some of the students, including the two girls, cared enough about Kim Ha-neul to consider calling the police or other classmates after putting more distance between them and the battle, but they would never succeed.
The building before them writhed, forming into the silhouette of a girl with emerald hair that cascaded down to the floor.
“Phew, Master is too harsh. That boy was something I could handle, but now I’m left with the leftovers.”
Just as the sun was at its zenith, it was suddenly covered by clouds at the appearance of this girl.
In the now darkened city, the shadow-controlling girl revealed her sharp fangs in a grin.
“But if Master says to eat, I guess I must.”
There’s no paradise for those who try to run.
The most reliable sub-ordinate of the terrorist leader and the terrorist who openly ate humans in the streets was now facing off against the weakest member of the group and a current celebrity.
Though snakes slithered from the shadows, ready to strike, Kim Da-seul, frozen in fear, stood in stark contrast to the seasoned celebrity, who calmly switched tracks in the playlist on her audio device to a file filled with self-affirming affirmations—declaring confidence in defeating their enemy.
“Do you two feel the same?”
“Just stay behind me.”
Hearing those words, Kim Da-seul’s trembling subsided, feeling as if Kim Ha-neul was by her side.
Ignoring this, the attacker continued to glance not at her designated prey, but at the ongoing battle between Kim Ha-neul and the woman.
“Bon appétit.”
Thus began the confrontation between a criminal who could obscure the sun at will, and a superhuman who could manipulate the spoken word as though it were divine commandments.
A confrontation that was one-sided at first and where all participants were more focused on the greater battle occurring nearby than on their own.
