Chapter 123: Trust
Who knows what Jiang Bin and Xia Hong were thinking when they heard that information. Just a few minutes ago, they were relieved that Xia Yu wasn’t dead after the first accident. But now, another crash involving a freaking big-a** truck came along, putting Xia Yu in even more danger.
This time, Jiang Bin learned his lesson. He turned to the Dean and said, “Tell those rescuers to haul Xia Yu back no matter what, with a white cloth over her head.”
After hearing this, the Dean knew exactly what was happening—an act of vengeance or worse. So he hurriedly ordered the rescue team to follow those instructions via phone. Sure enough, no unexpected incidents occurred this time, and the new ambulance safe returned to the hospital.
Under the Dean’s coordination, Xia Yu and the other injured people were rushed into emergency treatment as soon as they arrived. To prevent any mishaps, dedicated guards were posted at every entrance.
Even the doctors who were on vacation had been recalled; professional ones only, equipped with the best medicines—potent and side-effect-free. The most crucial factor was that using such medicine meant the patients wouldn’t end up with nasty scars after surgery.
Of course, the medical staff knew Xia Yu was a girl by now.
Knowing girls value their looks, they guessed Xia Yu definitely wouldn’t want any ugly scars, so they were all too willing to use this precious medication on her.
Moreover, they used absorbable stitches, so Xia Yu wouldn’t have to come back to the hospital for removal later.
The hospital then conducted a comprehensive health check on Xia Yu, including X-rays, considering she had experienced two major accidents. They wanted to ensure nothing was overlooked. After thorough examination, one can’t help but marvel at Xia Yu’s luck. Despite all the hardships, aside from the initial b*llet wound and concussion, she wasn’t badly hurt elsewhere.
Old injuries? That doesn’t count.
After being so battered, Xia Yu inevitably became anemic, so she remained unconscious and needed a bl**d transfusion.
Finally, Xia Yu was put on patient clothes and a urinary catheter before being settled into a VIP room for rest.
Seeing Xia Yu safe and sound, Jiang Kekai and Xia Yu’s family members couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness, thank goodness.”
“It’s time for the patient to rest. Keep one or two people here to guard and take care of her. She should wake up tomorrow. Come to see her then if you wish.” The Dean mentioned. He knew well how crucial rest was to a patient.
Right after the Dean finished speaking, Jiang Kekai immediately exclaimed, “I’ll stay!”
Before Jiang Kekai could continue, Jiang Bin smacked her head gently. “Why do you insist on staying? Go home with us and return tomorrow as a group.”
“Are you sure I can?”
“Yeah, go.”
Jiang Kekai didn’t make a fuss because the kidnapping incident had already upset her father enough. Plus, she believed her father was right—Xia Yu was part of the Xia family, and it wouldn’t be right for her to stay as a friend. In the end, Jiang Kekai followed her parents upstairs and boarded the helicopter that had just refueled, leaving the hospital.
On the way, Jiang Bin felt he forgot something, making him feel uneasy and frustrated.
With the Bing family leaving, Xia Ling, Wang Wenjuan, and Xia Hong were left alone in the ward.
Wang Wenjuan suggested to Xia Hong, “Why don’t you go to sleep? You have a lot to do at the company tomorrow. Xia Ling and I will stay here and take care of Xia Yu.”
“Do you really think you can manage?”
Xia Hong hesitantly asked.
“Yes, we’ll just wait here. You should go to bed.”
“Alright, I’ll come again tomorrow.”
Reflecting on the day and night, Xia Hong couldn’t help but feel a headache coming on. If only he hadn’t gone out for dinner, perhaps he could have avoided these troubles.
Xia Hong left while rubbing his temples, feeling somewhat defeated.
After they left, Xia Ling and Wang Wenjuan were the only ones left, keeping watch over the resting Xia Yu.
Much later, Wang Wenjuan seemed to remember something. She softly asked Xia Ling, “Little Ling, did your dad settle Xia Yu’s fees?”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay, stay here with Xia Yu. I’ll go check it out.”
Saying so, Wang Wenjuan retrieved her bag and took out a card, stepping out the ward to pay the bills to avoid a scenario where the hospital stops Xia Yu’s medication due to unpaid fees.
But when she checked, her jaw dropped—Jiang Bin’s family had already paid Xia Yu’s entire bill and even reserved an extra million for future expenses.
Since that was the case, there was no need to pay anything. Facing such generosity from Jiang’s family, Wang Wenjuan felt conflicted, sensing they treated Xia Yu kindly. Even though she knew it might be compensation for Xia Yu being burdened by Jiang Kekai, she thought Jiang’s goodwill was excessive.
Perhaps… she just lacks experience. Reluctantly, Wang Wenjuan decided to find solace in that explanation.
Therefore, Wang Wenjuan went to get some boxed meals before returning to Xia Yu’s ward.
Given the situation, tonight’s dinner plans were off, and considering their emotional roller-coaster, neither her nor Xia Ling was hungry. On her way back, Wang Wenjuan bumped into a familiar elder—a senior figure at the hospital, no less. He was swamped tonight due to the accident-related emergencies involving the medical staff.
Spotting Wang Wenjuan, the Dean immediately flashed a smile. Handing over a set of reports, he said, “It’s perfect that you’re here. I can avoid looking for you. This is your daughter’s medical report.”
“Daughter?”
Confused, Wang Wenjuan wondered—didn’t those medical staff already operate on Xia Yu, insert a urinary catheter, change her clothes?
How could she possibly be wrong? It just couldn’t be!
“Yeah, isn’t that Xia Yu your daughter? Why get worked up over nothing? I’ve got stuff to handle. See you later.”
Speechless, the Dean waved goodbye and left, leaving Wang Wenjuan puzzled.
Flipping through the report the Dean gave her, she panicked. Could she have gotten it wrong? Her son Xia Yu couldn’t possibly be biologically female, right?
Alas, as she pondered this, the Dean was already gone, and she didn’t know where to look for him. Resignedly, she tucked away the report and decided to verify things herself by checking on Xia Yu.
So when Wang Wenjuan returned to Xia Yu’s bed, she laid down the food and promptly shut the door. Turning to Xia Ling, she said, “Xia Ling, turn around a bit. I need to check Xia Yu’s body.”
“Mm.”
Xia Ling complied, albeit curiously glancing back from time to time.
At first, it wasn’t much cause for concern. Wang Wenjuan seemed normal enough. However, when she noticed Xia Ling turn her head slightly to peek again, she panicked! Xia Yu had the biggest secret of them all, hidden away.
“Wait, mom!”
Xia Ling wanted to stop her, but it was too late.
In a swift move, Wang Wenjuan successfully undid Xia Yu’s pants, exposing the biggest secret of all.
Seeing this, despite being psychologically prepared, Wang Wenjuan was truly shocked.
Gradually, memories came flooding back. Xia Ling once told her Xia Yu started menstruating; she didn’t believe her back then. But later, she found a sanitary napkin in Xia Yu’s room.
All this evidence… her son had become a girl. Or perhaps, it wasn’t really her son at all, but someone else impersonating him.
Shaking her head, Wang Wenjuan dismissed the thought. Impossible. No mother could ever misidentify her child. There’s something mystical about maternal bonds.
Collecting herself, Wang Wenjuan redressed Xia Yu and covered her with a blanket to keep her warm.
Looking at the awkward Xia Ling, Wang Wenjuan sighed, “Come back inside. Xia Ling, do you know how Xia Yu ended up like this?”
“Yeah, since she came back, she’s been this way. We talked about it during New Year’s, remember? You didn’t believe me back then.”
With the truth revealed, Xia Ling knew better than to lie and admitted everything truthfully.
Simultaneously, she hoped Xia Yu wouldn’t blame her for letting it slip.
Seeing her daughter’s remorseful expression, Wang Wenjuan sighed. “Anything else? How come Xia Yu told you this but not me? Does she not trust me?”
“She found out herself, and she asked me to keep it confidential. And she also bought sanitary products here…”
Staring at her mother, Xia Ling glanced nervously, saying, “She was scared you’d think she’s a freak and reject her, worried she’ll end up homeless.”
Hearing this, Wang Wenjuan caressed Xia Yu’s head gently, sighed, “Is Xia Yu still not trusting me? As her mother, how can I reject my own child?”
“Really? Neither you nor dad would mind Xia Yu’s current condition?”
There was a hint of hope. If her parents weren’t bothered by Xia Yu’s new form, then Xia Yu wouldn’t have to hide anymore.
