Chapter 125: Another Million
But now that things had come to this, Jiang Bin wasn’t going to hide anything anymore. “Your husband should have told you, right? It was my family that kidnapped Little Yu back then—more specifically, my father’s brother.”
“So what? I’m more curious about what you did to Little Yu! Do you even realize how damaging this is for a normal guy’s thoughts?”
“I know.”
At this moment, Jiang Bin became serious. “But this is not the outcome I wanted either. My father’s brother is a rather crazy doctor. He was conducting secret human experiments, and by the time I discovered the location, it was already too late.”
Jiang Bin’s words were a mix of truth and embellishment.
“So, Little Yu…”
“Yes, Xia Yu was one of the victims, but she was also lucky because she survived against all odds. Do you know what happened to all the other kids who underwent experiments with her?”
“What happened?”
Wang Wenjuan had a sinking feeling in her heart.
“They all died—thousands of them. Your child is the only one who survived,” Jiang Bin said flatly. “What about that uncle of yours?”
“He’s dead.”
“Dead?” Wang Wenjuan found it hard to believe.
“Yes, he committed s*icide. If you don’t believe me, I can take you to see his grave.”
“No thanks, I just want to know if there’s a way to turn Little Yu back into what she was—a boy again?”
Right, this was one of Wang Wenjuan’s reasons for seeking out Jiang Bin. If the Jiang family could turn Xia Yu back to the way she was, then all of this would be resolved.
Though… Wang Wenjuan didn’t really want Xia Yu to go back, she just didn’t want to see Xia Yu suffering day after day, looking so miserable.
Looking into the determined eyes of this mother, Jiang Bin sighed, “Let me put it this way: it’s easy to chop down a tree, but really hard to grow one back. If you know anything about such surgeries, you know transferring from female to male is much harder than the opposite, and the risks are ridiculously high. Plus, if you want to revert back and do a transplant, we also have to worry about rejection. Overall, I personally wouldn’t recommend this. It’s better for Little Yu to adapt to her life as a girl.”
“Is there really… no other way?”
Her weariness showed in her voice. She had no idea that in half a year, Xia Yu had gone through so much and almost didn’t make it back.
“Well, in my opinion, Xia Yu is quite cute as a girl. Forcing her to be a boy might harm her more. You wouldn’t want your child to feel out of place, would you?”
At this moment, Zhang Yunzhi, who had been silently listening, couldn’t help but voice her opinion. Honestly, she thought Xia Yu looked too out of place as a boy.
Wang Wenjuan also wished for Xia Yu to be comfortably herself as a girl. She was not only worried that Xia Yu couldn’t handle her body being in this state, but also about whether her husband could accept their child like this.
After a moment of contemplation, Jiang Bin continued, “This experiment isn’t mature yet. Xia Yu is one of the lucky few among tens of thousands of kids. If we keep subjecting her to these kinds of experiments, the chances of success might only be one in a hundred thousand or even one in a million.”
Upon hearing this, Wang Wenjuan fell silent, unsure of what to do. Jiang Bin’s message was clear—Xia Yu had little hope of reverting back, and doing so might even cost her life. So now there was only one solution: get Xia Yu to accept herself as she was; no alternatives.
It was at that moment that Wang Wenjuan heard Jiang Bin’s question.
“Does Xia Hong know about this?”
Wang Wenjuan paused, then shook her head, “Not yet. Only my daughter and I know.” “Are you planning to tell him?”
“Not yet. Based on what I know about him and the others, they’ll probably find it difficult to accept Xia Yu’s transformation.” That was the most honest answer Wang Wenjuan could give. Last night, at Xia Ling’s place, she had held back a bit, not wanting to hurt Xia Ling too much.
“Well, that’ll be tricky to deal with. Plus, with Xia Yu’s mental condition, if she gets rejected by her father, it could be dangerous!” “Alright, I’ve asked what I needed to ask. Since there’s no way for Xia Yu to safely revert, I’ll just have to try my best to help her see things more positively.”
Watching Wang Wenjuan leave, Jiang Bin couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief, glad Wang Wenjuan was maintaining her composure instead of causing a scene. Otherwise, he’d have to whip out that contract signed by Xia Hong!
Besides, this was the VIP wing of the hospital. Every patient here was wealthy and influential; if Wang Wenjuan really caused a ruckus, it would directly affect his social standing.
Hesitating for a moment, Jiang Bin pulled out a card and handed it to his wife, Zhang Yunzhi, saying, “There’s a million on this card. When we leave, please give it to Wang Wenjuan. Even if the kid’s situation becomes public one day, I trust her mother won’t abandon her.”
Receiving the card, Zhang Yunzhi looked a bit unwilling. “Why are you being so generous to this kid lately? You’ve spent several million, haven’t you?” “It’s just proper social manners; you wouldn’t understand. The Jiang family owes this child.”
Zhang Yunzhi shook her head with a helpless smile, then Jiang Bin headed toward the patient room.
Adults talk about adult matters outside, while inside the room, Xia Ling seized her chance to ask, “Jiang Kekai, did your family really kidnap my sister a year ago?”
Hearing this question, Jiang Kekai wasn’t surprised at all; she figured Xia Yu had told Xia Ling, so while continuing to feed Xia Yu, she replied, “Yeah, but it was my great-uncle who did it, so it’s not really related to my parents or me. If you insist on blaming me or them, there’s nothing I can do about that.”
Suddenly, Jiang Kekai seemed to think of something, stopping her spoon and turning to Xia Ling, cheerfully adding, “Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, Xia Yu doesn’t blame me or my family, so your sister is really kind!”
Seeing Jiang Kekai like this made Xia Ling grit her teeth in annoyance, but she suppressed the urge to blow up.
When Jiang Kekai finished feeding Xia Yu, Wang Wenjuan returned to the room, wearing a smile that looked strained to anyone who could see.
This made it clear that Wang Wenjuan’s mood wasn’t great.
Glancing at the plain porridge she had brought back, her mind drifted back to what had just happened, and suddenly, she had no appetite.
Following her in were Jiang Bin and Zhang Yunzhi, both of whom had significant status. It was already a rare occasion for them to carve out time to visit and see Xia Yu.
So it was time for them to leave.
Before departing, Jiang Bin reminded Jiang Kekai, “Little Ning, I know what’s on your mind, so just stay here and keep your friend company. We’re heading out now.”
“Okay.”
Jiang Kekai’s tone was a bit excited; even if her father hadn’t mentioned it, she would’ve brought it up later anyway. Then, Zhang Yunzhi completed her husband’s task: “Ms. Wang, could you come see us off?”
“Sure.”
Wang Wenjuan wasn’t sure why Zhang Yunzhi was doing this; perhaps she had something to discuss, so she followed her outside after acknowledging her.
As they walked, Zhang Yunzhi handed Wang Wenjuan a card. “This is a little something from me and my husband for Little Yu. Please take care of it. The password is six zeros—better safe than sorry.”
Wang Wenjuan wasn’t naive; she understood the implication behind Zhang Yunzhi’s “better safe than sorry,” so she didn’t refuse. Why not accept a gift for free? After all, the Jiang family had plenty of money.
Plus, if it weren’t for the Jiang family producing such a talent, Xia Yu wouldn’t have ended up like this. Wang Wenjuan felt no guilt sacrificing her pride for a good chunk of change.
And so, Jiang Bin and Zhang Yunzhi took a helicopter away from the hospital, looking quite majestic. As for how much was on the card, Wang Wenjuan wasn’t curious; that was impossible.
Just then, she saw an ATM nearby and figured she’d check the balance.
And boom, another million! (Foreshadowing for the main character later)
However, remembering Zhang Yunzhi’s words about being cautious, she quietly pocketed the card. If that situation arose, she’d give it to Xia Yu.
As for now… she couldn’t give it yet.
Because Xia Yu was still young, not even graduated from elementary school, and Wang Wenjuan thought of her as quite the gullible child. If she gave the card to Xia Yu and someone tricked her…
So… she’d wait until Xia Yu was a bit more sensible. (More foreshadowing for the main character later)
Back in the patient room, Wang Wenjuan spotted Jiang Kekai watching a movie on her phone with Xia Yu snuggled beside her.
Indeed, with Xia Yu just out of surgery, her recovery had only just begun, and she couldn’t sit up—just lying there, bored to d*ath.
To entertain her, Jiang Kekai had the brilliant idea of watching a movie. It only required her eyes to move, which was fairly easy for the steadily waking Xia Yu. And given the room’s layout, only two people could see the screen: Xia Yu lying in bed and Jiang Kekai seated beside her with the phone.
Predictably, this made Xia Ling even more annoyed about being left out, especially since her sister was ignoring her to play with the newcomer.
Now that even Xia Yu was too busy for her, Xia Ling could only sulk on the bedside and play by herself, thinking that next time, she definitely wouldn’t let Jiang Kekai into their home.
