Chapter 152: Jiang Heng
“Hmm, you don’t even check the drawings when they’re handed to you? I’m not going to waste my breath telling you how unprofessional this attitude is. Effective immediately, you’re fired.”
Those casual words hit Wu Ningyu like a sledgehammer. His face paled; he had truly not expected Jiang Kekai to be so resolute.
I mean, this was a job that paid 30,000 yuan a month, and his workload wasn’t heavy. He often had time to play games and goof off. If he didn’t care about the job, he wouldn’t have gotten this good of an offer anywhere else.
Wu Ningyu’s lips trembled as he tried to muster an explanation. Finally, he gave in with a weak plea:
“I’m sorry Boss, I only shouted at her by accident. Can you please forgive me this one time?”
“Who told you to shout at her? This is your final warning. Pack up your things and get your due compensation, then get out. I never want to see you here again.”
With that, Jiang Kekai turned and walked away with Xia Yu, leaving Wu Ningyu no chance for explanation.
After all, he had touched something very personal—her “scales,” so to speak.
To others and family alike, maybe Xia Yu was just someone she played around with for a while. But in Jiang Kekai’s heart, things were far more complicated than that. So, under the watchful eyes of everyone in the Technical Development Department, she decisively took Xia Yu away from there.
Looking at Wu Ningyu, who was still in a daze, the department head sighed and said, “There’s no point in arguing anymore. Just pack up and leave.”
“Supervisor, could you… could you plead with the boss for me? I really don’t want to lose my job,” Wu Ningyu pleaded.
“Don’t you know what our boss’s position is? Forget it, I don’t want any trouble. It’s on you now.”
With those words, the supervisor left without hesitation, suddenly losing all anger towards Wu Ningyu in light of what had just happened.
As for Wu Ningyu after this incident, Xia Yu didn’t know; her “Little Ning Sister” had already taken her straight to her own office.
Turning to look at Xia Yu, who was on the brink of tears once more, Jiang Kekai couldn’t help but smile. “What’s wrong, Little Yu? Weren’t you always such a little tough guy? Crying all the time isn’t good, you know.”
At the same time, she wiped Xia Yu’s tears with a tissue, sighing inwardly that Xia Yu had become quite the handful lately.
Listening to Jiang Kekai’s teasing remarks, Xia Yu didn’t know if she meant them or not. She felt lost. The word “tough guy” seemed like a distant memory.
But Jiang Kekai did hint to Xia Yu about being strong. At her age, crying over anything was unacceptable. Xia Yu got herself together quickly, at least not wanting to look childish in front of her “Little Ning Sister.”
Jiang Kekai, of course, noticed Xia Yu’s efforts. She gave her an affectionate pat on the head: “That’s more like it, Xiao Yu. Crying makes you look like a kitten.”
Later, rather than rush elsewhere, she stayed by Xia Yu’s side until Xia Yu fully recovered, then left with her. Given previous events, Jiang Kekai felt it necessary to give Xia Yu a formal role. Last night, she promised to nurture Xia Yu into her personal secretary.
So, Jiang Kekai thought about registering Xia Yu in various companies and giving her an ID card proclaiming her role as a secretary. That way, she hoped no one would mistakenly identify Xia Yu.
In the car, Jiang Kekai couldn’t resist putting an arm around Xia Yu’s trembling shoulders, pulling her close. Xia Yu felt helpless. How had things changed so much since she was a “little boy”?
That evening, after touring all her companies in Demon City, Jiang Kekai took Xia Yu home. They’d missed dinner because of their outings.
Once they were out of the car, Jiang Kekai glanced at the sky and decided it was still early. She asked Xia Yu, “Xiao Yu, we came back late last night. We have time now. Want to explore this place?”
“Mmm~”
Xia Yu naturally agreed. Her curiosity about her “Little Ning Sister”’s house grew with every step.
This time, Xia Yu extended her hand to hold Jiang Kekai’s instead of waiting for her. She still found the surroundings unfamiliar and was a bit afraid.
Smiling indulgently, Jiang Kekai took Xia Yu’s hand and led her around.
Given that the Jiang family was the richest clan in Demon City, their mansion’s facilities were impressive. Better than Xia Yu had imagined, this was a private space.
Xiao Yu, these are the bodyguards’ villas, the maids’ villas, the security staff’s villas, the gardeners’ homes, and a smaller house where Grandpa and Grandma Jiang like to stay…”
While walking, Xiao Yu eagerly listened, asking many questions about the houses and residents. She understood everything now that Jiang Kekai explained.
Laughing, Jiang Kekai pinched Xia Yu’s cheek affectionately and pointed out the direction where her grandparents were: “Come, let’s go greet them.”
In that moment, Jiang Kekai could feel a different pressure on her hand where Xia Yu held onto her tightly. Clearly, Xia Yu was nervous.
They weren’t just her grandparents; there were other elderly neighbors nearby playing chess.
It’s fine,” Jiang Kekai reassured her. “If you’re uncomfortable, I’ll do the talking.”
Jiang Kekai noticed the old people, and they noticed Jiang Kekai—and Xia Yu too.
The Jiang family’s young lady brought home a girl. The servants had gossiped about it, and the elders heard bits of the discussion. Naturally, they wondered who Xia Yu was to warrant Jiang Kekai’s attention.
In truth, her grandparents knew who Xia Yu was, but chose silence because it wasn’t a glorious matter.
Her younger uncle’s failed experiments had turned a normal person into a “devil.” Now her most promising granddaughter unexpectedly developed feelings for her, which upset him.
Yes, her grandparents weren’t completely open-minded. As older folks, they stuck more to traditional thinking than Jiang Kekai did. They knew about Xia Yu’s experiment and its success, but also her original identity.
Jiang Kekai’s grandparents didn’t react warmly to Jiang Kekai and Xia Yu, unlike her usual cheerful self. Instead, they stared sternly at Xia Yu, as if disapproving deeply.
Before Jiang Kekai could greet anyone, her grandfather spoke up rudely, “When will you leave this family?” His tone was cold, as if Xia Yu owed him something.
He clearly disliked Xia Yu intensely.
No surprise, Jiang Kekai’s grandfather blamed her younger brother’s experiments for this. Why should their son and granddaughter bear the burden?
Initially, the elders planned to question Xia Yu further. Now, they were even more curious about who she was.
Furthermore, it seemed Jiang Heng was aware of Xia Yu’s identity.
Unsurprisingly, Xia Yu squeezed Jiang Kekai’s hand tighter at her grandfather’s harsh words. Feeling rejected, Xia Yu silently asked herself why she was so loathed.
Jiang Kekai was perplexed. Her beloved grandfather hadn’t liked Xia Yu before. However, she stayed firm: “Grandpa, how can you say such things about Xia Yu? She’s my friend. Isn’t having friends and companions normal?”
“Well, if you’re talking about other normal girls, I have no objection, but her… I won’t agree.”
“Why?”
“Why shouldn’t you guess? Regardless, I’ll never agree.”
Thus, Jiang Heng and Jiang Kekai faced off over Xia Yu, neither willing to concede.
Xia Yu didn’t want any conflict between her “Little Ning Sister” and family. Gradually, thoughts of going home started creeping in, and she felt humiliated for coming to this place.
