Chapter 13: Twinkling Starlit Night!
Night Star jumped in surprise at the sudden sound beside her, almost using Godspeed B to escape.
But thinking about it being an academy, she decided it would be wise to stay calm to avoid causing a commotion.
Even so, Night Star quickly moved away, now standing three to four meters away and staring intently at the person in front of her.
Standing before Night Star was a girl around 170 cm tall, appearing to be just seventeen or so, but Night Star felt there was more to her than meets the eye. The aura around this young lady didn’t fit with someone who should be full of energy and life.
The girl had long white hair and golden eyes, pale skin, making her appear very delicate. Yet, against all odds, Night Star sensed a strong presence from her.
She also wore a red headband over her neck, leading Night Star to assume she might be fond of music.
Is she one of the Star Holders too?
Is she a student here or a Night Watcher of Qi Yuan City?
Night Star couldn’t tell.
So she remained silent, unsure of how to deal with this mysterious person.
The girl next to her asked softly, “Are you a student here?”
Her voice was gentle and comforting.
“Ah… Yeah…”
“What’s your name?”
“Night… Star, I’m late by accident…”
“If that’s the case, then hurry up. The Night Watcher is starting the class. As a Star Holder, you’re responsible for the power within you. You can’t just let it go.”
“Do I know what I’m doing…”
At this moment, Night Star could only pretend to be a student here and hoped for the best.
Still, she had some curiosity and asked, “Aren’t you going to attend the class too?”
The girl stared quietly at Night Star, then said softly, “I am a Night Watcher, so I don’t need to learn these things anymore. And conveying knowledge requires only one person anyway.”
“Uh, what’s your name?” Night Star blurted out subconsciously.
“My name is Ice Lixie. I’m the eternal guardian of this city.”
After saying that, Ice Lixie turned and left, leaving Night Star with a deep impression of her incredible presence.
This person… is pretty strong.
When Ice Lixie spoke those words, Night Star sensed a strong will, beyond what an ordinary Night Watcher would have.
She’s remembered it!
From now on, she needs to be extra careful when encountering Ice Lixie as an Audience Performer.
Back to reality.
Night Star realized that the Night Watcher Ice Lixie had already left.
Feeling relieved, Night Star was ready to bolt, not at all interested in attending any classes.
Then suddenly, her eyes caught sight of where the Star Holders were gathered. They were all staring at her.
“Huh?”
Night Star froze slightly.
The Night Watcher teacher assigned to teach the students gestured her over, calling her to come closer.
It seemed Ice Lixie had spotted Night Star when she jumped out from by a trash bin, and the distant Night Watcher had noticed her as well.
Now, the Night Watcher was motioning her over. Should she go?
After some hesitation, despite the pressure of all the other people watching, she finally tiptoed forward.
Meh, whatever.
She needed to put on perfect acting skills to get through this!
From now on, she was officially the new student—Night Star! (For real)
Shortly after, Night Star came before the Night Watcher, waiting for his questions.
“What’s the situation here?”
“Well, I just transferred schools and some weird teacher told me there’s special instruction here. So, uh, what do they teach?”
As she spoke, Night Star put on a convincingly confused expression, looking genuinely unsure about the whole situation.
The Night Watcher sized her up for a moment before believing her story.
“You can leave for now. I’ll give you individual tutoring later.”
“Thanks!”
Night Star inwardly rejoiced.
Her acting skills were fooling the Night Watcher now~
Just like her!
With glee, Night Star blended into the crowd of curious students.
All the other students were curious about the new, cute student, but they were too intimidated by the Night Watcher to approach her, and so had to wait until free time.
The Night Watcher continued lecturing about stars.
Hidden among the students, Night Star didn’t listen to a single word.
Strictly speaking, these lessons were old news to her.
There was no need to listen again, so she simply zoned out.
What she was really doing was figuring out how she could sneak off.
Using Existence Interference to lower her profile and then dashing away with super speed—no one would notice her.
The current Night Watcher lecturing on star basics didn’t seem too formidable either.
Certainly not as impressive as Ice Lixie; he probably wouldn’t notice her.
If it weren’t for Ice Lixie spotting her, she would have escaped ages ago.
Sure enough, the Night Watcher ranks are full of hidden aces. An elite school has such heavy hitters, so she needs to proceed carefully.
Just as Night Star was daydreaming, a voice broke her thoughts.
A male student was calling out to her.
“Hey, new girl, what school did you transfer from? What’s a star? Is it really that advanced?”
“Um, not really…” She replied off-handedly.
So she’s just another student, whispering while a big shot gives a speech like they used to do in school. This felt eerily familiar. Back in the day, leaders would talk, and people below would murmur.
“It seems you’re still unclear about what we are. Let me tell you, Night Watchers are an awesome national agency. Only Star Holders can join. Besides high benefits, there’s high authority. Way better than other jobs. If we perform well in school, reaching the level to join the Night Watchers straight out of college means winning right off the bat. That’s my ultimate goal.”
“Uh-huh… Well, good luck with that.”
Night Star just wanted to roll her eyes.
Who knew Night Watchers were so popular?
On second thought, it makes sense. A mysterious and prestigious job like that would appeal to many students.
Forget about the job appeal. Night Watchers get high benefits, ensuring they never go hungry.
But these students don’t realize what lies ahead.
Higher risks mean higher rewards. The benefits Night Watchers enjoy aren’t unearned. They likely face extremely dangerous stars, risking their lives. Definitely high-risk work.
Though Night Star hasn’t formally participated in a serious mission, she has dealt with a few Star Eclipses.
Without the Wish Machine—a heavenly-level star—the chances of her even getting that close would be slim. And she’d be at risk of losing herself or worse—dying.
That’s dangerous.
“You’re so cute! I’ll take care of you. I have a really powerful star. Follow me and you’ll rise fast. Once you graduate, you might even become a Night Watcher yourself. What do you think?”
Hearing this, Night Star gave him a strange look and hesitated for a minute.
“Nah, thanks,”
She declined politely.
