### Chapter 24: Riddle Man Get Out of Yun Chang City
After leaving the hospital room, Night Lan unleashed her impressive initiative, using her Night Watcher privileges and her friendship with White Fish to snag a detailed report on White Fish’s condition.
“It’s not a normal illness? It’s caused by a Star Eclipse?”
Realizing that things were spiraling out of control, Night Lan began to investigate deeply.
From the documents, it seemed that stars were hereditary.
White Fish’s parents were also Star Holders, or rather, Night Watchers.
They had two kids: White Paint and White Fish.
Initially, when they had White Paint, nothing unusual happened, and she inherited her father’s star quite normally.
But when White Fish was born, things took a turn for the dramatic.
During White Fish’s birth, her mother’s star showed signs of going rogue, barely leaving White Fish alive.
Fortunately, the Night Watchers arrived just in time to stabilize the mother’s star.
However, they later discovered that it wasn’t fully resolved.
White Fish’s vitality was draining away rapidly, and her only chance of survival was to stay far away from her mother.
Night Lan kept digging and stumbled upon some info about the mother’s star.
“White Fish’s mom has a curse-type star? Could it be that White Fish was affected by the mother’s temporary tantrum, cursing her life and soul, leading to her decline?”
As for why proximity to her mother accelerated her decline, some Night Watchers speculated that a mutation in the star caused a repulsion effect.
“Hmm…”
Still didn’t understand a thing.
Night Lan realized her knowledge was painfully limited; there were many terms she didn’t even know!
Then it hit her: White Fish had mentioned her parents were deceased. Maybe, just maybe, that info could shed some light.
So Night Lan tried to look it up, only to be met with “insufficient permissions.”
Now she was completely baffled.
With a distressed look on her face, she exited the medical facility.
Just as she was about to find Zero Meow for a Night Watcher crash course, she stumbled upon White Paint, who was out on her own.
Night Lan thought for a moment and dashed over.
“White Paint-senpai!”
“Hmm? Night Lan, not chatting with White Fish?”
“Um, I’ll be visiting her again tonight.”
“Is that so? That’s good! That girl gets lonely. Thanks for finding time for her.”
“Ah, it’s nothing; we’re friends!”
Saying that, Night Lan wore a hesitant expression, which caught White Paint’s attention.
White Paint patted Night Lan on the head and said, “If you have something to say, spill it! I don’t mind.”
“Um… I found out about White Fish’s illness. Have you found any treatment options?”
White Paint fell silent; the light in her eyes dimmed noticeably.
“Not yet, but I’ve found hope. I will ensure White Fish gets completely better.”
Night Lan recalled White Fish’s words and couldn’t help but say, “White Fish said she didn’t want to burden you too much…”
That wasn’t really a secret.
“She said that to me too, but I know she wants to live more than anything else. That’s enough for me. She hides her true feelings, thinking she can fool me, but as her sister, how could I miss her emotions?”
Night Lan’s mouth dropped open in surprise.
So White Paint knew everything?
But wait, why did that sound so familiar? White Fish had said something similar…
Night Lan pieced it all together.
Both sisters were not very straightforward, seemingly trying to do what’s best for the other. It felt so complicated!
Night Lan gathered her emotions and voiced her thoughts.
“Um, I want to help too! She’s my friend; I can’t just stand by.”
White Paint’s gaze softened significantly; she didn’t even mind that Night Lan was a rookie Night Watcher.
“Then let’s go find the Wish Machine, also known as the Extraordinary Star.”
“The Wish Machine? What’s that?”
“Well… it’s a newly birthed Extraordinary Star. It might be able to grant wishes. Even if the hope is slim, it’s still a hope.”
Night Lan had a blank expression.
Does that kind of wish-granting ability really exist?
It seemed so ridiculous.
Wait, she turned into a Loli because of some weird wish before bed!
Could this mean the Wish Machine was right by her side, or could she herself be the vessel for the Wish Machine Star?
Just thinking about that ignited a flame of determination in Night Lan.
But then that reminded her of all the failed experiments, and her excitement plummeted like a bucket of cold water.
[Hmm… probably just a coincidence; how could that be? My star just runs away fast…]
Sometimes, Night Lan wasn’t very confident in herself.
“Um, I want to find another way. Relying on that kind of ethereal hope doesn’t feel right; could you tell me about what happened before? You know, after White Fish was cursed?”
“About the past…”
White Paint lapsed into silence.
Night Lan felt the atmosphere around White Paint shift; it became overwhelmingly heavy.
But that feeling quickly vanished, as if it had never existed.
“Forget it. What’s in the past is in the past. No need to dig things up; finding the Wish Machine is better.”
With that, White Paint turned and left, leaving Night Lan stunned.
“Hmm… White Paint-senpai seemed really scary just now. Was there an event from the past that was a memory she didn’t want to recall? I think I messed up…”
Night Lan walked towards Zero Meow’s place, feeling a bit dejected. It’d be best to learn some knowledge first.
Knowledge is power!
Meanwhile, inside her small house, the white-haired Night Star was equally troubled, even losing her motivation for gaming.
At that moment, the doorbell rang. Night Star went to answer it and found the neighbor guy from next door.
“I made too many snacks again and can’t eat them all. If you don’t mind, please take some!” Mo Tu wore a sweet smile, looking very friendly.
Night Star hesitated but accepted the offer.
“Thank you.”
“You seem a bit down. Did something happen? Maybe I can help.”
Night Star didn’t share her thoughts, considering it a secret.
Plus, she wasn’t fully trusting Mo Tu; he was just a seemingly nice neighbor.
Seeing that Night Star didn’t want to talk, Mo Tu didn’t press for details.
“Are you doubting your ability to handle this? Why not be a little more confident and believe in your strength? Things might not be as complicated as you think, and some things, perhaps only you can achieve.”
Night Star was caught off guard by his words.
Before she could respond, Mo Tu left with a smile.
“If I make too many snacks next time, I’ll bring some to you again. Hope you like them.”
“Um… thanks.”
Night Lan closed the door and returned to her room, staring thoughtfully at the bag of snacks in her hands.
Half a minute later…
“What did he mean by that?”
Still confused!
Riddle Man, get out of Yun Chang City!
But considering the snacks he brought were delicious, she’d let him off the hook this time.
Night Star munched on the snack, a look of bliss spreading across her face.
