Chapter 249: But I like washing with you.
The two bodyguards exchanged a look, and then didn’t bother to lie: “No, we’re not looking for him.” “Then what are you here for? And what do you guys do for work?”
The old man’s questions made the bodyguards feel awkward about telling the truth, so they vaguely replied: “Uh, we’re here to keep someone company.” After saying that, they quickly hurried away from the old man, as if their jobs were none of his business. Geez.
Though they had some complaints in their hearts, they didn’t want to argue with the old man because they didn’t know when the Misses would leave anyway.
Similarly, the old man was displeased with the bodyguards’ departure; he felt they were too casual and disrespectful for being such strangers. Back under the large banyan tree, facing the equally curious villagers, he could only reveal a little information since that was all he knew.
Time always flies, and before anyone realized it, Wang Wenjuan started calling people to come downstairs for dinner: “Hey kids, let’s go eat now.” This applied to the four girls and Xia Le as everyone was just kids to her.
However, neither Jiang Kekai nor Jiang Hanhang cared much about this, considering it just another name. Otherwise, life would be such a drag living with so many rules. Jiang Kekai took Xia Yu and Little Cutie’s hand and headed down the stairs, while Xia Ling held Jiang Hanhang’s hand. Xia Le, though, remained absent.
Still, his gaze toward Xia Yu remained complex, making it unclear what he was thinking.
As soon as they reached the first floor, the sensitive Jiang Kekai noticed the strong scent of chicken soup, realizing Xia Yu’s family must have slaughtered a chicken today. “You’re here? The soup is already cooled for you. Want to try it?”
Upon hearing Wang Wenjuan’s words, the four girls and Xia Le finally paid attention to the table, where there were five half-bowl servings of soup prepared specifically for them.
All utensils and chairs had been replaced, making Jiang Kekai feel comfortable sitting down instead of feeling she couldn’t even eat. Taking the bowl of soup left by Wang Wenjuan, Jiang Kekai started slurping it up. It was… a bit too sweet and had an intense carrot flavor, which she didn’t like.
But as this was the future mother’s soup, she had to finish it. Dropping would be too rude. “Little Ning? The soup is yummy, right? Want me to save some more for you?”
Seeing Jiang Kekai had finished, grandma tried to dish out more, but Jiang Kekai, a bit panicked, quickly and embarrassingly declined: “No, no need. No need. I’ll stick with the food.”
She even took her bowl away, worried that grandma would pour more soup, forcing her to suffer through another round.
Although the soup wasn’t great, the chicken tasted pretty good, tender and not chewy at all due to prolonged stewing.
Of course, good things shouldn’t be enjoyed alone. So tasting a piece, Jiang Kekai immediately scooped another into Xia Yu’s bowl, saying, “Xia Yu, this meat tastes great. Try some.”
“Uh, thanks, Little Ning sister.”
Xia Yu was used to being taken care of, so much so she momentarily forgot the occasion and the watchful eyes of her grandparents.
Indeed, besides the grandparents, everyone else was accustomed to this, and it would be strange if Jiang Kekai didn’t share her food with Xia Yu.
Grandma, ever the voice of reason, chimed in: “Little Ning, Xia Yu, Xia Ling, and Xia Le have eaten a lot. No need for all this.”
“Okay.”
Jiang Kekai responded but proceeded to continue feeding Xia Yu. Xia Yu’s enjoyment of the meal also brought happiness to Jiang Kekai. Truly, what a wonderful feeling.
Seeing this, grandma stopped arguing and continued her own meal.
The identities of Jiang Kekai and Jiang Hanhan were known to the elderly couple; they recognized them from when Xia Yu was kidnapped and brought back. Thus, they knew these girls came from wealthy families.
After dinner, Jiang Kekai directly led Xia Yu upstairs, while Xia Ling took Jiang Hanhan along. They couldn’t be bothered by washing dishes. Wang Wenjuan naturally understood how important Jiang Kekai was to Xia Yu, ensuring she wouldn’t allow Xia Yu to face any hardships. As for the trivial tasks like washing dishes, Wang Wenjuan took care of those herself.
“Xia Yu, have you picked out your nightwear? Do you need help choosing something?”
In the room, Jiang Kekai lounged on the princess bed, watching Xia Yu pick out clothes. A bit curious, she wondered what Xia Yu would choose for sleeping attire. Naturally, Jiang Kekai favored sleeping dresses because they felt nicer to hug.
However, with cooler weather, she couldn’t enforce this anymore.
She allowed Xia Yu free reign. Whatever Xia Yu chose was fine, and she could change into a dress later. Jiang Kekai had it all figured out.
Sure enough, Xia Yu skipped sleep dresses, opting instead for a pink-white set of pajamas with long sleeves and pants. She was hesitant to be seen in such attire by her suddenly appearing grandparents.
Wearing less in pajamas might expose her secrets, leaving her vulnerable.
Thus, unless absolutely necessary, Xia Yu wouldn’t wear sleep dresses.
Fine, fine. Seeing Xia Yu’s choice, Jiang Kekai took it in stride—after all, Xia Yu had worn this before. She had to admit, Xia Yu had good taste.
Next, Jiang Kekai sprang from the bed to pick out her post-shower attire and told Xia Yu, “Xia Yu, wait for me. We’ll wash together.”
Hearing this, Xia Yu hesitated and looked at Jiang Kekai bashfully, trying to feign refusal: “Little Ning sister, I can wash myself.”
“But I like washing with you. Come on, let’s go.”
With that, Jiang Kekai casually grabbed a sleep dress and tugged Xia Yu’s hand, not allowing Xia Yu any room to refuse.
And so, they walked off together.
