Chapter 48: Sharing Secrets
Night Star and the Administrator returned to the library and saw a white-haired girl with headphones on, who was none other than Ice Lixie.
Ice Lixie, who had been listening to music with her eyes closed, seemed to sense their return and immediately opened her eyes, revealing a gentle smile.
“Welcome back, looks like you guys had fun today.”
“Yeah, we did.”
Night Star was actually quite surprised when she saw that Ice Lixie was managing the library. She thought someone else was handling things for the Administrator, but it turned out to be a Sunlight Night Watcher.
Putting such a powerful Guardian in charge of the library seemed a bit overkill.
Ice Lixie even agreed to do so, sitting at the desk as clear evidence.
It looked like the Administrator and Ice Lixie were on great terms.
Night Star suddenly remembered something and said to Ice Lixie, “Um, someone was following us earlier. I’m fine, but the Administrator might not be okay. Since you’re a Night Watcher, can you handle this?”
“Following?”
Ice Lixie pondered for a moment and then smiled reassuringly. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it. No one can harm those I protect.”
“Thanks, then.”
Afterwards, Ice Lixie prepared to leave. With the real librarian back, there was no need for her to stick around.
Plus, she had other important tasks to attend to.
“I could come visit our Night Watcher Base if you have ideas, Audience Performer.”
“Ah, this… I might consider it…”
Ice Lixie disappeared from Night Star’s sight.
Meanwhile, Night Star was about to look for more books when the Administrator spoke up,
“Audience Performer, can I talk to you about something?”
“Hmm? What’s it about?”
“There’s a secret about me that I want to share with you.”
“Secret?” Night Star tilted her head curiously. What could the Administrator’s secret be?
“It’s good, I’m all ears.”
Ice Lixie left the library and gazed at the gradually darkening sky. Sitting atop the highest point of the Calligraphy and Painting Entertainment District, she observed the area.
Those troublemakers were at it again.
The location of the highest experiment subject might have been exposed.
With the target’s appearance known, finding them would not be too difficult.
Unexpectedly, she noticed people with ill intentions focusing on the library.
She had to eliminate these pests before they disturbed the Administrator and the Audience Performer’s conversation.
Under the cover of night, dark shadows moved stealthily towards the library.
Ice Lixie sensed them.
If that group hadn’t been taken out last time, there would probably be even more tonight.
Even with severe losses, the Sunset Research Institute still managed to send people to the Calligraphy and Painting Entertainment District, showing its formidable connections.
But no amount of numbers could make up for their lack of strength.
A single Sunlight-level Night Watcher could easily take out those individuals.
And Ice Lixie was just such a person.
Once she pinpointed her target, Ice Lixie left her vantage point and quickly closed in.
At the same time, the Sunset Research Institute’s operatives were swiftly approaching the library.
From the conversations with nearby citizens, they confirmed that the library here had a purple-haired administrator who fit their target perfectly.
Waiting in ambush was their best option.
Just moments ago, they had seen the purple-haired administrator return to the library.
Though they wondered why there was no report from inside, once they confirmed her presence, they planned to snatch her away.
They kept their approach low-key to avoid raising suspicions.
There were numerous Night Watchers patrolling the Calligraphy and Painting Entertainment District, so they had to blend in with the crowd.
To their relief, there were no Night Watchers who questioned the presence of many unidentified Star Holders.
“We’re getting close, ready to act,” the leader instructed.
A moment passed and no response came.
“?”
The leader frowned slightly.
Then, he felt an ominous presence behind him.
“What…?”
*Thump!*
Ice Lixie sent a person flying, their body sliding dozens of meters, their fate uncertain.
“Twenty-third one…” Ice Lixie mumbled, her golden eyes glowing in the darkness like tiny sparks of gold.
She leaped upward with terrifying agility and reached the library’s highest point.
She scanned the area using her spiritual senses, finding no more suspicious figures.
It seemed the Sunset Research Institute only sent twenty-three people.
Perhaps they were a mismatch of recruits from different places, and most were surprisingly weak.
For her, they were like ants waiting to be crushed.
Perhaps they didn’t expect a Sunlight Night Watcher to be around every corner.
Ice Lixie let out a soft sigh and contacted her logistical team, calling upon them to clean up the aftermath.
Currently, the Research Institute’s remaining Star Holders were running low in number.
What confidence did they have left to reclaim the highest experiment subject now?
Artificial Star Eclipses?
Probably so.
Although those Artificial Star Eclipses weren’t as troublesome as real Star Eclipses, they were still beyond the reach of ordinary Night Watchers.
Without Sunlight’s presence, those Artificial Super Star Eclipses might have wiped out the entire Night Watch force.
How long would this situation last?
Ice Lixie stared at the bright moon hanging in the sky, her eyes reflecting a complex mixture of emotions.
“The world needs transformation; even if it means enduring more pain, I will wait for that moment to come…”
—
Inside the library:
Night Star and the Administrator remained unaware of the commotion outside.
Sitting at the same table, Night Star awaited the reveal of the Administrator’s secret.
Her curiosity grew.
What was this profound secret that the Administrator wanted to share?
Not some simple stuff about age and childish behavior.
Perhaps a major revelation.
After all, the Administrator’s aura was exceptional, and so must be her secrets.
This thought made Night Star serious.
The Administrator leaned in and softly said,
“In fact, I am also a Star Holder.”
“Oh? Really? I don’t feel anything.”
“Because my star is hidden by the Night Watchers, making it hard to detect.”
“I see~”
Then a wave of confusion washed over Night Star once more.
Was this really the big secret?
It seemed a bit underwhelming.
Just as then, the Administrator whispered,
“And my Star’s power is… immortality.”
