Chapter 8: Playing It By Ear
“Mmm, this must be the capital’s airport. Can we really find a Night Watcher here? Wouldn’t they all have gone home?”
Yelan observed her surroundings curiously and with great vigilance.
Judging from the bustling crowd, identifying a Night Watcher here might take some time.
It’s probably best to head over to the Night Watcher’s designated transportation area first.
Hopefully, there will be someone waiting who can lead them somewhere.
If not, she’ll have to go straight to their headquarters.
But without any reserved routes, it could take ages to get there.
Yelan didn’t want to sit in a car for too long; it would be exhausting.
“Mu mu mu~”
Suddenly, a black-haired girl appeared behind her.
“Hey there.”
“Woah!”
Upon hearing this voice, Yelan jumped back and watched the figure approach warily.
“Who are you? State your name or I’ll call out!”
Ji Yun was surprised by her reaction and introduced herself politely.
“I’m Ji Yun, a Night Watcher from headquarters. Are you Yelan?”
“Oh, right. You’re a Night Watcher. Yes, I’m Yelan.”
Once Yelan realized this lady was indeed a Night Watcher, she calmed down instantly.
Of course, only a Night Watcher would wait for her here.
“So, you’re here to pick me up?” Yelan asked cautiously.
“Yes, the Leader sent me.”
“What happened just now? Has my disappearance caused any trouble?”
“No, everything’s fine. Your absence hasn’t caused any issues.”
“Phew, good to know. Now I feel much better.”
Yelan let out a breath of relief, feeling a weight lifted off her shoulders.
As expected, the Leader has everything under control.
If the Leader is looking after her, even at the capital, she wouldn’t need to worry about anyone bothering her.
She was ready to embrace those sweet thighs!
“Let’s head back then.”
“Alright, follow me.”
Yelan then joined Ji Yun in front of a hovering vehicle.
Yelan sat in the passenger seat while Ji Yun took the driver’s seat and started up the engine.
The vehicle began rising and speeding off.
Ji Yun chose a less-traveled route instead of the usual flight paths.
Night Watchers enjoyed high social benefits, and this was a clear example.
Their vehicles had dedicated flight channels, unlike ordinary people who jockeyed on regular routes.
This special channel would allow them to reach headquarters in no time.
Yelan couldn’t help but feel wise for suggesting they come to the airport to look for a ride.
Otherwise, taking a taxi might have taken much longer.
Inside the vehicle.
Both were silent, and the atmosphere inside was tense.
During the trip, Yelan was lost in thought, her attention completely shifted to the night sky.
Eypar and Guqiu were bickering again—probably over something nonsensical.
Yelan found it hard to comprehend.
Why on earth would an intelligent ghost like Eypar argue with a pigeon?
Isn’t she supposed to be more sensible?
Only someone with severe brain damage would engage in such an argument.
And yet, Guqiu always seemed to win these confrontations—an absurdity.
Eypar was beyond salvation.
The useless ghost needed to be given a reality check.
While Yelan was drifting off, Ji Yun was observing her intently, curious about what made her unique.
So far, besides her cuteness, there wasn’t anything special about her.
Could she be related to the Leader in some secret way?
If she was the Leader’s relative, however, there’d be no reason to act so secretive.
Perhaps, this girl held some crucial secret, unknown to Ji Yun.
Ji Yun continued pondering as she navigated.
Her observation suggested the loli was quite introverted.
Not that she wanted to dig into Yelan’s secrets, but she did want to build positive rapport.
Such an adorable girl deserved a welcoming gesture at least.
Being a secretary, she had guest reception duties, after all.
Finally, she spoke up.
“Have you been to the capital before?”
“Huh?” Yelan snapped back to reality and nodded absently.
“No, this is my first time here.”
“Do you have plans to tour around? I could recommend some noteworthy places.”
“Nah… no need. I just want to get things done and head back.”
“To Yun Chang City?”
“Yeah.”
Ji Yun deduced the little one wasn’t genuinely interested in the place at all.
Just there to fulfill a task, nothing more.
Without the Leader sending her, the girl probably wouldn’t have come to the capital at all.
What could drive the Leader to personally summon her?
Curious? Not in the slightest.
At that moment, Yelan felt an intense gaze from Ji Yun.
Was she saying something inappropriate?
Sniff sniff!
Time passed slowly. The vehicle finally landed at headquarters.
Yelan was relieved the uncomfortable gaze was gone.
“Phew.”
She hopped out first, taking in the headquarters’ architecture.
From the outside, it looked like a massive, inconspicuous skyscraper blending seamlessly with the cityscape.
But Yelan knew appearances could be deceiving.
Even the Yun Chang City base was divided between ground and underground sections, so the headquarters almost certainly had a similar layout.
She even suspected that this entire region belonged to the headquarters, a special district where common citizens weren’t allowed.
Or perhaps, this entire area was the “headquarters.”
Just as Yelan nodded thoughtfully, Ji Yun spoke behind her.
“Come on, the Leader’s been waiting for you.”
“Um hmm.”
Yelan followed Ji Yun, curiosity leading her into the headquarters.
Inside, she saw many people moving around, likely Night Watchers.
They seemed like regular patrol units handling smaller incidents.
Rumors said many skilled operatives resided here—way more than in ordinary cities.
She wondered how powerful they actually were.
Would she stand a chance against the Rising Sun Theater Group’s Star Eclipses?
Lost in her thoughts, Ji Yun brought her to a stop and gripped her shoulder.
A wave of dizziness washed over, and the surroundings changed instantaneously.
“You’ve arrived. The Leader is waiting inside.”
“Huh?”
