Chapter 61: Is It Really So?
Night Lan snuck back to the headquarters’ lounge, only to find that she was the sole occupant.
“Could it be that the Leader didn’t notice my disappearance?”
Just as Night Lan was filled with doubt, she noticed her Night Watcher device, which had been on the table, seemed… slightly tampered with.
She picked it up, checking for recent messages.
On the screen appeared a message sent by the Leader long ago:
[After your return, remember to contact me and give a proper explanation of what happened.]
Seeing this, Night Lan’s cherry lips slightly parted, revealing a sorrowful expression.
“So, I still can’t escape? Haha!”
Now she would have to provide an explanation.
But Night Lan didn’t want to reveal anything about the Rising Sun Theater Group—not out of fear that the Leader might do something to her, but rather to avoid social d*ath.
Social d*ath is way more terrifying than anything else!
Indeed, she had to think hard about how to lie through her teeth successfully.
Could she really fool a leader of a Night Watcher organization? If the Leader could be easily duped, they’d be doomed sooner or later.
Time to put some serious thought into it.
After pondering for a bit, Night Lan suddenly had an idea and contacted the Leader.
[Leader, I’m back.]
Moments after sending this, the reply came back:
[Come to the office; Ji Yun will pick you up.]
[Okay.]
Exhaling deeply after sending the message, Night Lan felt ready for anything.
Soon enough, Ji Yun’s figure appeared in the lounge.
Night Lan, already prepared psychologically, acted naturally without any sign of weirdness.
Ji Yun asked, “Ready?”
“Mmm, yes, I am!”
And so, Ji Yun led Night Lan to the Leader’s office.
The Leader sat awaiting Night Lan, sighing softly when she arrived. She looked relatively fine, so that was good news.
Ji Yun left the office.
The formal conversation between the Leader and Night Lan began.
“So, where were you during your absence?”
Although the Leader roughly guessed her whereabouts, it’s always better to ask.
After all, this girl didn’t seem eager to reveal her secret, so they might as well wait until she’s ready.
Right now the Leader was interested in what reason Night Lan cooked up to fool them with.
“It’s all the fault of the Dream Narrator!” Night Lan blurted out, not even considering dragging in the Rising Sun Theater Group.
“The Dream Narrator is just too evil! This time, he made me live inside some dream for ages alone. Terrible stuff!”
The Leader raised an eyebrow.
Her story was close to what the Leader guessed—indeed, the Dream Narrator had his eyes on Night Lan.
“What did you two do inside that dream then? Given he only took you there personally, he must’ve had a purpose.”
“Well… he talked about some strange stuff.”
“Care to disclose?”
“He said it’s a secret. If anyone outside knows, bad things could happen.”
At least, this is what Night Lan understood.
Her response made the Leader twitch at the corner of her mouth.
Oh boy, she almost let slip she was siding with the Star Eclipses!
Conserving the secrets of such a dangerous and vague entity is genius, almost too smart for words.
If Night Lan’s identity weren’t somewhat special, the Leader might’ve considered cracking her skull open to look for clues.
In either case, curiosity was best kept at bay.
“So, what bad stuff could happen? Can you at least hint at it?”
“He said it might bring a multitude of Supernova Star Eclipses.”
“Guess we’ll leave it at that.”
The Leader couldn’t fathom any secret worth triggering multiple Supernova Star Eclipses. Capital City couldn’t sustain such chaos.
“On the other hand, there is one thing I can inform the Leader. Keeping silent doesn’t feel right. You’d think I’m disloyal!”
The Leader twitched again.
She practically stepped into the Rising Sun Theater Group territory. What loyalty are they talking about?
As long as she doesn’t cause trouble, it’s fine.
The Leader was very interested in the thing Night Lan decided to tell.
So, here came the confession:
“The Dream Narrator talked to me about the origins of stars and star eclipses.”
“Origins?”
The Leader was genuinely shocked.
Such supernatural powers had never been studied by the Night Watchers. No one knew their true source.
This had been the ultimate goal for the scholars, yet no progress had been made over the years.
To think the answer finally came from Night Lan’s mouth—or rather, the Dream Narrator’s.
If this info got out, scholars would go wild.
However, Night Lan’s revelations made sure nothing gets out. The fewer people who know, the safer.
Facing multiple Supernova Star Eclipses without breaking under the pressure, this was hard enough for them. At least there wasn’t panic.
“So what does this have to do with your total disappearance?”
“Well…”
Night Lan averted her eyes, her fair cheeks reddening slightly, as if she thought hard on how to dodge the truth.
“Oh, yes—it’s really the Dream Narrator’s fault!”
“Again, his fault?”
“Exactly! He’s like a Supernova Star Eclipse! With that kind of power, it makes sense that I’d get pulled into a nightmare. Terribly scary!”
A Supernova Star Eclipse?
Tactic-based step back time for the Leader.
When [Zhi Xing] sounded the alarm, the scale wasn’t clear, making it mysterious.
Sure, a Supernova’s level fit the Dream Narrator’s trouble, but something didn’t add up.
But aside from the Supernova level, nothing else checked out.
Is it really so?
“True, see the sincerity in my eyes! Trust is fundamental, don’t you think?”
Leader fell silent.
Then don’t avoid eye contact!
“I guess I’ll believe you for now.”
Seeing she was still skeptical, Night Lan quickly changed the topic.
“In fact, I have another news I want the Leader to know—it’s really important!”
“Yeah?”
“That the Dream Narrator is leaving the capital.”
“What? Is it true?”
This caught the Leader off guard.
Thought she was going to spend tonight trying to get back into the dream or increasing night patrol, but no, Night Lan says he’s leaving the capital?
Nodding, Night Lan confirmed, “Mm-hm, he told me directly. I think he’s being honest.”
Leader calmed down upon hearing this.
“If so… then perhaps we can take a breather? We don’t need to keep up our Law-Defying Stars at HQ.”
Leader took a deep breath.
Though the Star Eclipses were short-lived, it caused plenty of pressure.
Finally, some peace.
