Chapter 41

Chapter 41: The Great Xia Yu Gender Mystery

During the ride, one can’t help but feel a bit bored, so naturally, Xia Ling pulled out her phone again and cuddled up with Xia Yu to play those fun little games.

In previous years, when visiting Grandma’s place for Lunar New Year, no one would play with Xia Ling because there were only her two male cousins, with no other girls around. So after she got her red envelopes, she’d just sit there, quite bored.

But things are different now. Xia Ling had a great idea: she dressed Xia Yu all girly-like, so now Xia Yu couldn’t go off with her Big Brother and cousins. She’d have to stay behind and play with her instead.

Watching Xia Yu and Xia Ling sitting together so cutely and closely, Wang Wenjuan felt like she was somehow having twins, which is kind of messed up given that Xia Yu is already a living embodiment of “chopsticks.”

And Xia Le decided in his heart that he’d never deal with Xia Yu again. His brother used to be girly-looking and acted girly, but who knew he’d actually start wearing dresses? That’s pretty tarnishing for masculinity.

Plus, if Xia Le didn’t ostracize Xia Yu, his buddies would make fun of him too once school starts again.

But Xia Le had to admit, Xia Yu looked pretty darn cute in that outfit. On the way, he kept sneaking glances at her new look, which made him slightly distracted.

They played games and passed time, and before you knew it, the tricycle had arrived at their destination. The folks on board grabbed their stuff, the driver took off, and everyone headed into the village with their arms full, twisting this way and that, until they got to Grandma’s family home.

As expected, there were other relatives dropping by to visit, though no kids around except for them – the classic “bring adults, leave children at home” routine.

The crew entered Grandma’s house bearing gifts, and as they did, Xia Yu saw people setting up big tables for a feast—like every other year, but still, a feast.

Just as Xia Le set down his stuff, a relative stepped forward and gave him a red envelope. “Little Le, you’ve grown so much!” he said. “Here’s your New Year’s money.”

Since Xia Le got one, and Xia Ling and Xia Yu were such adorably cute… well, girls, albeit unrecognizable due to their girly outfits. The relatives hadn’t seen Xia Yu in dresses before so they were thrown off.

Xia Yu and Xia Ling were like a pair of identical twin pandas with superpowers, looking almost indistinguishable. In previous years, they could tell them apart by Xia Yu’s boy clothes, but lo behold, she donned a feminine wardrobe.

One relative stepped closer to the taller Xia Ling. “Are you Xia Yu?” She asked. “You’re prettier than ever; I can hardly tell you and your sister apart.”

Precisely, the relatives were flexible and didn’t ask Xia Yu any gender questions in public. It wasn’t like they’d ask why she wore boys’ clothes before but changed to dresses now. Some planned to quietly ask Xia Hong later. Others told themselves, “Xia Yu must be a girl; it was just because she had no clothes to wear that she once wore her Big Brother’s old hand-me-downs.”

“Uncle, I’m Xia Ling~” Xia Ling corrected, a bit awkwardly. But secretly, she was pretty pleased to be mistaken for Xia Yu’s big sister.
