Chapter 43

Chapter 43: The Mischievous Little Ling

Time seemed to fly by when playing games, and Xia Yu felt like just a moment had passed before it was time for lunch.

The adults quickly laid the dishes on the table, filling the air with their savory aromas. The scent wafted into Xia Yu’s nose, turning her slightly empty stomach into a growling beast ready for a feast.

Thankfully, not long after, everyone found their seats to enjoy lunch. Meanwhile, Xia Le, accompanied by his two older cousins, returned from outside. Each of them, however, was carrying a brand new toy g*n that looked quite expensive.

Seeing his eldest son spending his New Year’s money on another toy g*n, Xia Hong wanted to scold him but held back since there were too many people around. He decided to talk to his eldest son later at home instead.

Watching his eldest son squandering money on toys, Xia Hong couldn’t help but look at his second son, Xia Yu. Xia Yu was sitting quietly in a corner with Little Ling, engrossed in playing with their phones. They both looked rather peaceful.

Unconsciously, Xia Hong started wishing that Xia Le could be as quiet and well-behaved as Xia Yu and Xia Ling. But then again, what else would you expect from boys—they love to play.

There were two round tables, one for the men and one for the women and children. As expected, during mealtime, Xia Yu was dragged by Xia Ling to the women’s table. The female relatives welcomed both of them enthusiastically, making Xia Yu feel a bit awkward about declining.

Noticing Xia Yu didn’t join the male table as she did last year, Xia Hong didn’t call her over. It would indeed look odd sitting among a group of drinking and smoking men in her current attire.

So, Xia Yu sheepishly sat at the women’s table for lunch. While the food and seating arrangements were separated by gender, the meals themselves were pretty much the same—alcohol for the men and drinks for the women.

Meanwhile, Xia Ling couldn’t resist trying to engage Xia Yu during the meal. For instance, now, she peeled a shrimp, waved it in front of Xia Yu and asked, “Wanna?”

Xia Yu: …

Although feeling a bit bashful, Xia Yu still managed to have a full lunch, given how delicious and abundant the food was. She wasn’t going to deny herself such treats.

During this lunch, Xia Yu, of course, couldn’t escape being questioned by the gossipy female relatives. Did they mention that she and Xia Ling were actually twins? Otherwise, how could they look so alike?

Actually… These female relatives were subtly hinting at Xia Yu’s gender. It was Xia Ling, who took on the role of the older sister, who answered their questions.

“Yeah, we’re actually twin sisters.”

Xia Ling wrapped an affectionate arm around Xia Yu as she said this, not caring about any potential consequences.

Hearing this, Grandma and Mother sitting at the women’s table were speechless. Should they correct Xia Ling? After all, it was their family’s embarrassment at stake. So, they remained silent, unsure of what to do.

Grandma and Wang Wenjuan’s reactions didn’t go unnoticed by the female relatives. They concluded that Xia Yu must indeed be a girl; they just misjudged before. They always knew a cute little thing like her couldn’t possibly be a boy.
