Chapter 33: Chinatown
In order to avoid getting caught in the crossfire, Night Star and Kong Yu Bai smartly decided to stop spectating and resumed their search for Qing Liao.
The sounds of battle were growing fainter, which implied that Night Star and Kong Yu Bai had now distanced themselves quite a bit. No more random laser showers to worry about here!
Though Night Star and Kong Yu Bai could easily shrug off any incoming fire with their abilities, discretion is clearly the better part of valor.
“Man, that was heart-stopping! Even back home we never had anything this scary, let alone those big boom weapons,” Night Star mumbled, not too phased by the whole ordeal.
Having seen much weirder things, she reckoned this one was tame by comparison.
“Free Country, huh? I bet these sorts of incidents happen every day around here,” Kong Yu Bai remarked neutrally but couldn’t help but bring up the two newcomers who fought against a criminal earlier.
“The two who showed up later, they probably belong to that country’s Star Organization. Kind of like a Night Watcher thing.”
Night Star’s ears perked up at the mention.
“Mmm, though they were a bit far away, I still caught the silver-haired chick introducing herself. She mentioned something about the Order of Sequence.”
Hearing “Order,” Night Star felt a bit unsettled—reminded of some religious outfit from her past.
The first such group she dealt with was the Holy Church, and that experience was quite… unsettling.
Facing another organization of that sort left her feeling ambivalent.
If this Order of Sequence turned out to be as shady as its predecessor, they’d certainly be in for some trouble!
Oh, and the foreign girls were stunning. Like that silver-curled miss calling herself Sylvia—classic Western beauty, almost like stepping into an old Western fantasy novel.
Her suit armor and massive sword only added to the charm. Quite possibly, that was her Star thing. Must be powerful.
As for the effeminate boy, no idea what his scene was but probably a helper type.
Meanwhile, as Night Lan and Kong Yu Bai moved away, they entered a whole new street.
No telling how far they had walked, but the crowd was bustling once more.
Curiously, most of the people passing by were East Asian-looking; likely fellow Chinese, or so it seemed.
Before Night Star could voice her confusion, Kong Yu Bai offered, “Looks like we’re in Chinatown. Lots of folks from Huaxia here. Probably makes life easier?”
Unlike Night Star, Kong Yu Bai had been focusing on navigation and not the scenery.
After all, Night Star was under her arm, literally and figuratively, so finding places wasn’t too hard.
Chinatown would likely make it easier to find news about Qing Liao.
Once Night Star learned they were among compatriots, she immediately felt more at ease.
This place was now friendly territory.
“Now’s not the time to lose momentum…”
gurgle gurgle gurgle
Before Night Star could finish the sentence, her stomach let out an embarrassingly loud groan!
“Haha!” Kong Yu Bai stifled a laugh. How could the girl be so adorable?
“Oops…”
Night Star blushed fiercely, recalling the fact that she hadn’t eaten breakfast since Miao Shinna prepared one for Night Lan.
“Oh, you need some food?” Kong Yu Bai asked gently.
“Yeah, I’m starving.”
With a nod, Night Star quickly suppressed her embarrassment. It wasn’t her fault her body was acting out.
Kong Yu Bai, being one of her best friends, wouldn’t make fun of her!
Sure enough, Night Star pretended she didn’t hear the stifled snickers. Selective hearing, that’s her superpower.
But the question of where to eat remained.
There had to be some Chinese restaurants around. Finding one wouldn’t be tough.
After meandering a bit, they spotted a quieter-than-average restaurant. Perfect for avoiding crowds.
Making up her mind, Night Star led the way through the door where an electronic greeting played, “Welcome!”
Following closely behind, Kong Yu Bai took a moment to survey the place. Something felt off…
Unconcerned, Night Star settled in her seat.
“Kong Yu Bai, come sit down.”
“Sure thing.”
Trusting in the singer girl’s confidence, Kong Yu Bai followed without hesitation. Nothing could go wrong, right?
Looking around, Kong Yu Bai noticed three other patrons: a young black-haired guy, a tall Chinese-looking lady, and a local-looking foreign girl.
The black-haired youth looked average and expressionless, even when customers came in. Almost robot-like.
Next, there was the tall Asian lady, standing close to a meter-seven. Definitely past twenty, looking no older than twenty-five. Same ethnicity as the guy.
And lastly, this pretty blonde with emerald eyes and a height of just shy of a meter-six. Definitely a grown-up but no more than twenty, she had a dainty appearance.
Kong Yu Bai could tell based on these observations.
But inside? She detected something else.
Besides the young man polishing glasses, both women were also Stars.
Their hidden presence was clearly visible to her keen senses.
And as they entered, Night Star and Kong Yu Bai became more noticeable too, presumably to keep staff engaged, especially since eating was the goal here.
Ignoring them entirely would have been no fun.
While the tall woman observed them with a thoughtful look, they prepared to dig in.
