Chapter 51

Chapter 13: Ghost Girl

Night Star returned to her cabin, closed the door, and crawled onto her bed.

Right now, she had nothing to do, at least during this time slot, just the same old routine of lounging around.

“Guess I’ll continue watching some anime.”

Speaking of anime, the shows back then were way out of sync with the future, so Night Star could only rewatch a few classics for fun, which wasn’t too bad of an experience either.

She placed her phone on her pillow, laid down on her blanket, and focused on the screen, happily wiggling her tiny feet wrapped in white stockings. Those delicate white threads hugged her skin tightly, creating a sight as alluring as an ice cream cone.

“Mm~ mm~”

After a bit, Night Star suddenly felt uncomfortable in her position, so she flipped over, lying flat on her back, spreading her slender little white legs, fixating her gaze on her phone.

If she got drowsy in this position, she would definitely drop her phone on her face, and she knew that would wipe away any sleepiness in an instant.

But thankfully, Night Star was quite energetic at the moment, so there was no risk of that happening.

“Hmm~”

Just then, a faint noise echoed through the otherwise empty room.

Night Star, ever so sensitive to such sounds, immediately perked up.

“Hmm?”

She hit the pause button on her show and tilted her head in confusion.

“Was that a mouse?”

If a mouse suddenly dashed across the room, Night Star would definitely jump out of her skin.

Of course, if she was prepared, she’d probably sprint over and give it a kick. She had that little bit of courage, you know.

Mmm… or maybe that’s just a reflex.

But instead of a mouse, Night Star was met with a rather peculiar sight. A faint shadow unceremoniously emerged from the wall next to her.

“Just passing through~”

A semi-transparent figure floated through the wall, right above Night Star.

Since she was laid back and looking up, she saw the whole process of the shadow emerging from the wall.

“Ugh! Mom, what the heck?!”

Startled, Night Star dropped her phone, which clobbered her right in the face, prompting a painful gasp.

“Ow~ that hurts…”

Night Star clutched her face and groaned before wrapping herself tightly in her blanket.

Thump, thump, thump!

Her heart raced, and her body trembled as she began to feel an odd mix of tension and fear.

What was that?!

Someone just walked through the wall?

Was it a ghost?

Wait a minute, why are ghosts even a thing in this science-filled era?!

But then again, constellations like Stars weren’t exactly scientific either.

Hmm…

Just thinking about Stars lessened Night Star’s tension and fear by half.

Let’s put it this way: if something unbelievable happened, shouldn’t one think of the known—like constellations—before jumping to conclusions about ghosts?

Constellations had all sorts of effects, like a can of superpower-flavored soda—some were indeed excellent for spooky shenanigans.

So, was that shadow just some bad prankster using constellations for a giggle?

Suddenly, Night Star managed to piece it together.

And right after came the anger—very much anger!

You know, she almost lost it—big time!

If she freaked out and “leaked” in front of a stranger, her whole life would probably be over.

So mad!

I must report this!

Night Star resolved to summon a whole squad of Night Watchers to catch that little rascal and give them a good talking-to!

She was brewing with emotions under her blanket.

Meanwhile, outside, someone was rather pleased.

“Ooh… Did I scare you? Your reaction was so funny; it’s my first time seeing that.”

A tiny girl floated in the air, her entire form barely visible, like a ghost. If you weren’t paying attention, you’d completely miss her.

She had long, grayish-white hair adorned with a long tuft on top, dark eyes, and looked pretty cute—definitely not much older than sixteen.

Her name was Eypar, a curious little ghost girl who loved causing a bit of mischief. After getting her kicks with harmless pranks, she’d silently slip away.

Even though she was a semi-transparent ghost, she often went unnoticed.

Even if she floated right in front of someone, they couldn’t see her; sometimes it got lonely.

But she could always make some noise.

Her favorite prank was to sneak up on focused people and make a sound right near their ears, the startled reactions filling her day with joy.

Though, she had her limits. If someone was doing something important or risky, she wouldn’t interfere.

“Mm~ mm~ that was satisfying, time to float away~”

Eypar softly cooed, preparing to glide through the wall.

But just then, Night Star dramatically tossed the blanket off, glaring at Eypar, puffing her cheeks in an exaggerated display of faux ferocity.

“Stop right there!”

“Hmm?”

Eypar turned back, her tuft bobbing like a question mark above her head, a puzzled expression evident.

It was unusual for someone to tell her to stop like that; most of the time, the people she pranked were too dazed to even react before she disappeared.

But this time felt different.

“Are you talking to me?” Eypar pointed to herself, her expression uncertain.

“Who else would I be talking to?!”

Night Star’s crimson eyes reflected the semi-transparent shadow.

Eypar, eyes wide, saw her own figure reflected in Night Star’s gaze.

Unlike others, this silver-haired girl seemed to actually see her!

Eypar’s tuft stood on end, a sign of her surprise.

“You can see me?”

“Well, obviously.”

“Why? I’m so curious!”

Eypar’s curiosity was piqued now.

She wanted to know why others couldn’t see her, yet this little Loli could—could she possibly have the legendary Yin-Yang Eye?

Eypar floated closer to Night Star, her tuft bobbing in excitement as she inched nearer for a better look.

But Night Star panicked and quickly reached out to stop her.

“Hey! Don’t come any closer! Just stay right there!”

“Are you scared of me?” Eypar tilted her head, perplexed. “You can see me, so why be scared?”

“Umm…”

Night Star didn’t want to answer, pouting slightly.

Having a timid personality combined with a hint of social anxiety? Yeah, she was a bit of a mess.

Her anger had simmered down by now.

That’s just how she was; she rarely held onto her anger for long—turn around, and she’d forget about it.

Instead of sulking, she preferred to just chill out.

But despite that, it didn’t stop Night Star from pointing out Eypar’s mistake.

“Anyway, it’s not okay to prank people using your constellations!”

“Constellations? What’s that?”

“Umm… probably something like superpowers?”

“Oh, I see~ But I’m already dead, you know? It’s not like I meant to turn out this way.”

“Wait, what?!”

Night Star was once again left speechless.
