Chapter 56: The Final Line of Defense
Night Lan never expected that Night Star’s absence during the performance would cause such a commotion.
In the minds of the Night Watchers, audience performers hold great importance.
They generally believe that these human audience members are the key figures in keeping the Rising Sun Theater Group in check. As long as there’s an audience performer around, the danger posed by the Rising Sun Theater Group drops to an all-time low.
It’s only in the presence of audience performers that the Night Watchers treat the Rising Sun Theater Group as an exception and don’t interfere with their antics.
However, this absence left the Night Watchers mulling over some serious “what-ifs.”
You know, like, what if the audience performer had an accident? Or what if they decided to quit the Rising Sun Theater Group?
Any of those scenarios would make anybody worry!
Fortunately, the lack of an audience performer this time didn’t send the whole order into a tailspin.
That’s why they were still hanging around, taking a “let’s wait and see” approach.
The leader of Pinghaishi reported the situation seriously, and all the big wigs were in the loop.
But oddly enough, the leaders didn’t seem too worried!
They also received word that Night Lan was safe and sound, taking a break in some mysterious location.
The leaders simply advised everyone to stand by and see what happens at the next performance.
That’s just how things stood!
Oh, and then there was the matter of Star Sheng.
The Pinghaishi leader reported this to headquarters, and the leaders were on board with Night Lan’s suggestion without a hitch, showing their support.
In a flash, the Pinghaishi leader swung into action and informed all the Night Watchers about Star Sheng’s existence and status through a formal announcement.
And boy, did that stir the pot!
“She turned back into a human?!”
“What kind of sorcery is this?!”
“Does that mean Star Eclipses can return to being human? Does it mean that becoming a Star Eclipse doesn’t guarantee a one-way ticket to the afterlife?”
“This must be something that headquarters’ Sunlight cooked up, right? I can’t believe she has that kind of groundbreaking ability! Talk about being top-tier!”
As for Star Sheng joining the Night Watchers? Most of them were totally cool with it.
Sure, the “Eco-interference” incident caused some major waves, but it didn’t mean Star Sheng was the bad guy.
Any Night Watcher worth their salt knows that once a human becomes a Star Eclipse, they lose themselves completely and become like a puppet. Everything they do is like a different person pulling the strings!
But once they turn back into a human? Their humanity and rationality come back, and they’re no longer monsters driven by obsession.
Plus, a lot of Night Watchers remember the live-streamed days of Night Lan and Star Sheng—they left quite an impression!
Who could possibly dislike a cute girl obsessed with little animals once they know the truth?
The Night Watchers were targeting only the nasty Star Eclipses, not our adorable human girls!
In fact, they were more concerned about Night Lan’s abilities.
Since she figured out a way to revert Star Eclipses back to humans, that meant becoming a Star Eclipse wasn’t necessarily the end!
Considering all the Night Watchers risk turning into Star Eclipses themselves, Night Lan naturally became a glimmer of hope in their hearts.
Just your average last line of defense!
And once this news spread, Night Lan became a big deal in Night Watcher circles.
I mean, a REAL big deal!
Night Lan was somewhat prepared for the attention, but facing it head-on was still a bit overwhelming.
Like, right now.
She hadn’t eaten anything all day and was craving some food, so she headed to the Night Watcher cafeteria with White Paint.
Everywhere she went, the passing Night Watchers stared at her with burning gazes, as if they wanted to rush over, poke her, and take extensive notes, practically drooling!
It was a little terrifying.
Oops, this whole becoming a big-name deal was still a little too much for her.
But hey, all in the name of her goals, right?
Good thing White Paint, the ice queen, was by her side. Otherwise, she’d be swarmed!
“Ugh… I’m totally famous now; those older folks are staring with such enthusiastic yet scary eyes.”
Night Lan muttered under her breath.
White Paint nodded knowingly.
“That’s because you’ve done something incredible—reversing a Star Eclipse back into a human! In the eyes of the Night Watchers, that’s considered impossible; there hasn’t been a successful case in history, yet you made it happen! It’s like a miracle!”
“Is it a miracle?”
Night Lan was a bit confused.
Maybe she’d done crazier things than this.
White Paint gently nodded.
“It’s definitely a miracle! Every Night Watcher faces the risk of becoming a Star Eclipse, and in the past, that meant d*ath. The more Star Eclipse events you got involved in, the higher the chances of becoming one! This weighs heavily on every Night Watcher’s mind.”
“But now you’ve come along. You’ve shown with a single example that Star Eclipses can turn back into humans. It’s not an absolute d*ath sentence, which would ease their minds and lessen their fears about accidentally becoming Star Eclipses.”
White Paint laid it down clearly as to why everyone was buzzing about Night Lan.
“They’re probably hoping that if they ever become a Star Eclipse, you’ll be there to rescue them, turning you into their savior! That’s the situation in a nutshell.”
“Whoa… looks like I’m kind of amazing, huh?”
Night Lan stroked her chin thoughtfully, reaching such a profound conclusion.
White Paint just smiled softly and gently patted her head.
Darling, it’s not just about being amazing. This is the hope of the Night Watchers!
After Night Lan filled her belly with the help of White Paint, she regained her spirit.
A little while later, the leader of Pinghaishi summoned Night Lan, apparently to discuss something important with her.
So, off she went to the meeting room to meet the leader waiting inside.
“Uh… did you need me for something, leader?”
“The leader has agreed to let Star Sheng join the Night Watchers in Pinghaishi, and she can register her ID today,” announced the leader with a smile.
“Yay~!”
Having a home for Star Sheng is definitely a good thing.
Even though they’d considered bringing Star Sheng back to Yun Chang City, she’d probably do better here in Pinghaishi.
After all, there are plenty of marine life here, and it’s a chance to “make up for past mistakes.”
Night Lan believes Star Sheng can live happily here.
Even when Night Lan wraps up her little vacation and returns to Yun Chang City, she can visit Star Sheng in Pinghaishi anytime.
The leader couldn’t help but chuckle at Night Lan’s excited expression.
Now that’s what you call a true Sunlight Night Watcher!
She was like a little kid!
But better yet, she was pulling off what even many seasoned Sunlight Night Watchers couldn’t, performing miracles left and right!
The leader cleared his throat and caught Night Lan’s attention.
“Night Lan, I want to ask you something.”
“What is it? Feel free to ask; unless it’s a secret, I can answer anything.”
“About Star Sheng turning from a Star Eclipse back into a human—was that really your doing?”
“Of course!”
At this point, Night Lan wasn’t about to start hiding anything.
“Even after being a Star Eclipse for ages, can a person revert back to human?”
“Uh-huh.”
Night Lan lightly nodded.
