Chapter 44: Becoming the Tragic Protagonist
Night Lan and Night Star arrived at the place where the energy of the Ballad Conductor overflowed, and they finally got to see him as they wished.
Now dressed in noble attire, he seemed to be trying to fit into this era.
Too bad, no matter how you looked at it, there was an extremely severe sense of disconnect.
Seeing his target approaching, the Ballad Conductor chuckled lightly.
“Who would have thought that you’d actually come over? You who seek to change tragedy, how do you feel now? Seeing your two friends fall one after another, does it make you angry or sad? Is this a tragedy for you?”
Night Star Lan coldly stared at him, not deigning to answer his question.
The Ballad Conductor was unperturbed and continued with his thoughts.
“Though I don’t know where you’re from, your attempt to alter my plan caught my attention. You want to stop the tragedy, but you lack the ability to do so; instead, you’ve made this tragedy even more spectacular. I’m very grateful for the immense satisfaction you’ve brought me.”
Night Star Lan struggled to suppress her negative emotions.
She didn’t want to turn into Star Eclipses again just because of the Ballad Conductor.
That would be too cheap.
He didn’t deserve that.
But listening to him ramble on gave Night Star Lan a fire in her heart.
Wasn’t he showing off his success?
Disgusting.
“You seem pretty calm.”
Seeing Night Star Lan not explode, Ballad Conductor continued.
“In fact, the most satisfying part for me in this tragedy is the ending of Ulysses. Defeating Hughes’s belief is simple – destroy everything he built. But with Ulysses, if you hadn’t appeared, he might have just survived through the Noble Meeting until things calmed down. Then, after his plan failed, Ulysses would go through a brief period of depression, and watching his desperation and pain would give me satisfaction.”
The Ballad Conductor reminisced about the despair he felt when Ulysses was involved.
“If you hadn’t interacted with him, he would have remained alone, never trusted by anyone, and might have died easily. But you earned his trust. His defenses wouldn’t crumble as easily because he has someone he can rely on. Even in dire straits, he tried to live on, find you, and start over. Clearly, you’re immensely important to him.”
Night Star Lan couldn’t help but think about what could happen.
If this was the case, it was cruel.
The Ballad Conductor wouldn’t stop.
“So, I thought, if I let the person he trusts most deal the final blow, revealing the lie he believed in, it would absolutely be interesting.”
Night Star Lan’s eyes widened, staring at the Ballad Conductor incredulously. A fierce flame seemed to be burning inside her.
“What did you do?”
Ballad Conductor smiled slightly.
“Just disguised myself as you, talked to him, extinguished his hope, and stabbed him to d*ath.”
“I’ll k*ll you!”
Night Star Lan really lost it!
Even her negative emotions could no longer be contained.
This guy was horrendous! Doing such extreme things!
Now, Night Star Lan was thinking of taking this j*rk out, even if she went berserk!
The Ballad Conductor burst out laughing.
“Hahaha! Are you sad? Are you angry? Yes, that’s the expression I wanted to see! I can’t alter your destiny, can’t bring tragedy to you, but I can make you feel it like this! I’m very happy!”
Night Star Lan almost broke her teeth.
Her negative emotions were approaching their limit.
What should she do?
She really wanted to let it all out.
Someone stop her!
If this continued…
She might lose control completely.
Night Star Lan clenched her fists, her nails digging into her skin, causing sharp pain.
She was like a bomb ready to explode.
She wanted to obliterate the Ballad Conductor with the power of the Star Eclipses Wish Machine.
But she didn’t want to turn into Star Eclipses herself.
Mutual destruction was the stupidest move.
It would be irresponsible to everyone.
Even if she was furious, she needed to stay rational…
Rational…
But her irritability and anger were nearly consuming her rationality.
She couldn’t suppress it herself.
Then, a cool sensation emerged from within, quickly spreading throughout her body.
“Aaah…”
Night Star Lan suddenly froze.
A golden, ethereal figure hugged her from behind.
This comforting feeling gradually cooled her rage.
[life blessing].
She felt rescued again by White Fish’s mom.
She couldn’t let her anger consume her.
She had to prevent the Ballad Conductor’s schemes.
This guy just wanted to see her fall apart.
She shouldn’t let him win!
“Phew…”
Night Star Lan already calmed down.
The Ballad Conductor also stopped his rant, looking somewhat regretful.
“You’re something else.”
Night Star Lan began contemplating how to defeat him.
Wish Princess… Help me…
She internally prayed, seeking the assistance of the Extraordinary Star’s consciousness.
[There’s a way.]
What is it?
Instantly, an idea popped into her mind.
Night Star Lan blinked and suddenly understood.
It was so simple?
Trusting the Wish Princess was indeed right!
Indeed, one shouldn’t be clouded by anger.
“Hmph.”
Coldly, Night Star Lan stared at the Ballad Conductor.
“Ballad Conductor, your obsession is to create tragedies, right?”
The Ballad Conductor narrowed his eyes.
“Not sure what you’re up to, but yes, you’re correct. I’m a star that likes to create and enjoy tragedies. This isn’t going to change.”
“Given your obsession with tragedy, have you ever considered becoming the tragic protagonist yourself?”
“The tragic protagonist? I’m very interested, but that’s impossible. As the expert on creating tragedy, I know the core of tragedy. Without enough power to alter reality, it’s inevitable. But I can change reality, not vice versa.”
Tragedy is a terrible story that results from not being able to change what you want to change.
If Ulysses had some resistance, he wouldn’t have died.
If Hughes had a capital beyond national authority, he wouldn’t have ended up in that miserable state.
They were too weak.
If they had power surpassing that of the Ballad Conductor, they wouldn’t end up in a tragedy at all.
The Ballad Conductor believes that no one can bring him to a tragedy unless the Origin of the Stars comes.
“Like you, Night Star Lan, you’re strong. I can’t make you the tragic protagonist, but I can make you feel the tragedy. I have no one I care about—no one who could bring me any sorrow. Do you feel you can make me experience tragedy?”
Night Star Lan exhaled deeply.
“Wish for me, if you’re truly obsessed with tragedy, then let me be the tragic protagonist!”
