Chapter 5: Undercover Visit
Shanghe City.
Night Lan sneaked through the Theater Door and arrived at some secret spot in the city without anyone noticing her.
It was daytime, a bit before noon, and the atmosphere felt quite lively.
When she looked down from a higher position, Night Lan got a burst of energy.
“Great, I successfully reached Shanghe City. Should I head straight to the Night Watcher Base? But no one knows I’m here yet; wouldn’t that be a surprise? Hmm… they should get a good scare.”
Night Lan pondered this as she zipped down from the balcony to the lobby.
No matter what.
She decided to head over to the Night Watcher Base. Perhaps it could be an undercover visit.
She’s got a big reputation these days—known as “Capital Sunlight,” “Final Defense Line,” “Hope’s Glow,” and “Leader of Graveyard Star Eclipses.” This means many Night Watchers recognize her.
No matter where she goes, Night Watchers easily spot her by now—just like celebrities in the entertainment industry.
Probably, once Night Lan shows up at the Night Watcher Base in Shanghe City, there’ll be buzz on their official forums. Thinking about it made Night Lan feel a tad embarrassed.
Her cheeks were surely reddening.
Ordinarily, she’d just avoid such thoughts to avoid awkwardness—unlike the world’s songstress, who can handle everything with unparalleled composure.
“Let’s meet secretly,” Night Lan thought, slightly enhancing her Ability, “Existence Interference,” reducing her presence to a point where only the keenest eyes—like those of A-level Astral Holders, or perhaps even the Sunlight Night Watchers—could pick up on any anomalies.
Still, each city has only three Sunlight Night Watchers, so there’s no real risk.
“Phew, no one will notice.”
Afterward, Night Lan began to recall the location of the Shanghe City Night Watcher Base, gazed up at the tallest Spire, and snapped her fingers to teleport to its peak.
From here, she could quickly assess the city’s layout and teleport anywhere she wanted.
“Ah, that must be the Night Watcher Base.”
Once she figured out her destination, Night Lan didn’t hesitate; she teleported directly near the base area.
Upon landing, she sprinted off using her B-ranked Speed ability to locate the familiar building.
“Mm… there it is.”
In front of her stood a skyscraper, unmistakably the Night Watcher Base in Shanghe City. Inside was a complex structure, far more sophisticated than most buildings in the vicinity. Night Lan had once stayed in there with Lan Feng Su Yu, sleeping in the same bed every night—waking up in her chest pillow, which always brought a blush to her face.
“Okay, let’s go in.”
Night Lan shook off her daydreams and prepared to enter the Night Watcher Base.
Upon entering the main hall, she saw receptionists tasked with attending to non-Night-Watcher guests. However, since Night Lan herself was a Night Watcher, her reduced presence went unnoticed.
With this, she confidently delved deep into the base, feeling like home despite her stealthy entry.
She also remembered roughly where Lan Feng Su Yu’s room was located based on past stays.
If nothing changed in a year, she should be right.
A short while later, she paused in front of a door and contemplated.
“Hmm… not here? Last time I checked, no one was inside.”
Lan Feng Su Yu might have gone on a mission. No surprise there.
Now, back to wandering around the base, waiting for her friend to return.
Under her veil, Night Lan managed to stay hidden from many passing Night Watchers. Awesome.
Decreasing existence perception is like heaven for socially anxious people—avoids unnecessary interactions.
But then—
Suddenly, Night Lan sensed someone watching her. Sure enough, a stern, fish-eyed old man was staring her down with an air of authority.
She turned her head and realized it was Yao Can, the leader of the Shanghe City Night Watcher Base—a strict fish-eye dude whose presence was notorious for intimidation.
Back when Doll City was under threat, she seemed to think Night Lan couldn’t control even a single star eclipse mission, much less her own astral power.
However, in crucial moments, she proved herself a powerful leader.
Night Lan deactivated her “Existence Interference” ability, ensuring Yao Can properly perceived her presence and didn’t misinterpret things.
If she kept hiding, misunderstandings could arise. After all, even A-level Night Watchers could detect only slight irregularities but never the truth behind them.
Night Lan had to face Yao Can sooner or later; better it be now when she’s caught in the act.
“Hey… long time no see, Chief Yao.”
Yao Can’s eyes narrowed slightly, clearly surprised by this sudden, blue-eyed, black-haired girl popping up.
“Come for something specific? Anything big happening in Shanghe City? If you’ve brought us news, keep it brief and to the point.”
“No, no, I just came to visit a friend. Personal visit.”
Night Lan felt that unlike Xiao Jin, Yao Can wouldn’t be as lenient with her, making her more cautious.
Certainly, not every city’s Night Watcher leader is as friendly as Xiao Jin.
Fish-lipped enforcers are seriously scary.
Night Lan finds dealing with such folks most challenging.
Yao Can then moved on after confirming Night Lan’s identity.
“I remember you’ve been doing great things lately. Surprised you’ve progressed so fast—much better than our first meeting. I’m glad.”
Night Lan blushed and felt a bit embarrassed, even to the point of digging holes in the ground with her toes.
Uncovering such personal details on first reunion—it’s overkill, isn’t it?
She was still a newbie at the time!
Not being reliable wasn’t on her.
Seeing her flustered, Yao Can’s eyes glanced over her state before he turned away.
“Clearly, your training isn’t complete yet. But you’re young, with great potential. Just keep getting stronger—crushing anyone standing in your way. I know you’ve got the talent.”
“Thank you?” Night Lan replied politely, though unsure why she did it.
“Feel free to roam around Shanghe City. Once again, thank you for all you do here.”
With that, Yao Can turned and walked away.
