Chapter 76: Buying a Phone
Sitting in the Jiang family’s very fancy business car, Xia Yu was still feeling quite conflicted inside. She was afraid—afraid that when she returned home, her grandpa and grandma and the villagers would ask her all those awkward questions about her jumping off something.
Looking at Xia Yu who was staring out the window, deep in thought, Wang Wenjuan hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided to speak up: “Little Yu, I remember you don’t have a phone, right? Do you want Mommy to buy you one?”
Indeed, seeing Xia Yu look so gloomy, Wang Wenjuan felt pretty bad too. Unconsciously, she found herself reminiscing about the time over New Year’s when Xia Yu and Xia Ling were glued to their phones, playing. So, she thought, if Xia Yu had a phone to play with, maybe she’d feel a little happier.
Besides, since they weren’t short on money, buying Xia Yu a phone wasn’t an issue.
Hearing her mom, Xia Yu softly nodded, kind of agreeing to her proposal.
Truth be told, Xia Yu couldn’t help feeling a bit miffed seeing Xia Le and Xia Jing having phones while she didn’t. Tiny as she was, she wanted a phone of her own too.
So, when they passed by a big phone store, Wang Wenjuan had the driver pull over, saying they needed to get some things.
The driver, being a professional, was quite generous and carefree: “Go ahead! Enjoy shopping!”
And with that, Xia Yu, Wang Wenjuan, and Xia Ling entered the phone store…
Once inside, Xia Ling, always nosy, got excited. If Xia Yu’s leg didn’t hinder her, Xia Ling might have dragged Xia Yu around to see everything.
After much deliberation, the considerate Xia Yu picked a cheap, low-end white phone. Why white? Because she thought it looked nice.
With the phone secured, Wang Wenjuan bought two SIM cards, one for Xia Yu and one for Xia Ling, cautioning them not to use mobile data unless they asked for permission to download any games or songs.
To be honest, Wang Wenjuan had really put her heart into making her daughters happy.
In truth, giving Xia Yu and Xia Ling SIM cards showed how much faith Wang Wenjuan had in them. Xia Le, though, was a different story. If a SIM card was bought for him, it’d likely run into immediate debt the next day…
Back in the car, as their journey home was still long, Xia Ling and Xia Yu started fiddling curiously with their new phones, while Wang Wenjuan guided them.
During the lulls, watching the long-haired Xia Yu, Wang Wenjuan thought, “It was such a mistake not to make Xia Yu and Xia Ling twin sisters before.” Even now, Xia Yu was still a joy to behold.
As she watched, a whimsical idea popped into Wang Wenjuan’s mind. Getting closer to Xia Yu, she asked, wearing a mysteriously joyful grin, “Little Yu, do you ever want to be a girl? There’s a surgery that can make you more like a girl, you know.”
Sure, it was the modern age, after all, and Wang Wenjuan wasn’t superstitious. Besides, she figured that Xia Yu’s current situation would suit such a procedure. With a house in the city, she could always move Xia Yu there if the village couldn’t accept her.
Of course, whether or not to go through with surgery would be Xia Yu’s decision.
No clue what was going through the driver’s mind, but hearing that must have been tough—he was hauling what sort of passengers anyway? Ones wanting their kids to undergo such surgery? Must be some joke, right?
P.S.: Feels like quitting this project.
