Chapter 8

Chapter 8: Little Yu and Her Hair Drama

Vegetable picking and washing; these two tasks were Xia Yu’s responsibility. So when lunchtime was near, she would head to the vegetable garden to pick some veggies, clean them up, and get ready for lunch.

Maybe because of her hair and face, some neighbors mistook Xia Yu for Xia Ling, which really frustrated Xia Yu. They didn’t know she had come back yet, and that was why!

So with Xia Yu’s corrections, the neighbors finally realized she was home.

As they say, children in the countryside grow up fast. Xia Yu was a perfect example. Once she learned how to cook, the cooking duties often fell on her plate.

Of course, except for the tricky dishes during festivals. The adults feared Xia Yu might mess them up, so they took it upon themselves to cook those.

Xia Yu’s daily cooked meals weren’t very complex—not more than five dishes, with two being leftovers from the previous day.

When the sound of cooking filled the air, Xia Yu’s parents and older brother downstairs would automatically come down to eat. No need for Xia Yu to call them. But Xia Ling was different.

So, Xia Yu still had one more thing to do: go to the court and call her twin sister back for dinner.

Arriving at the court, Xia Yu wasted no time, walking quickly over and gently tapping her sister on the shoulder. “Xiao Ling, it’s time to go home for dinner.”

Xiao Ling snapped out of her reverie, turning around to see who called her. She blurted out, “Er Ge~”

Hearing Xiao Ling’s voice, all her lady friends turned to stare at Xia Yu curiously, wondering about the person who had been missing for half a year and had now returned.

This morning, they could only view her from afar, but now they could get a close look. Upon closer inspection, they were even more stunned. My gosh, is this even a guy? How does he look so much like Xiao Ling?

Ignoring the shocked girls, Xia Yu turned and left. She wasn’t fond of people staring at her inquisitively.

Seeing Xia Yu leave, Xiao Ling hurriedly followed. At the same time, she said to her girl pals, “I’m heading back for dinner~”

When Xia Yu and Xia Ling arrived home together, their whole family was already gathered downstairs, each with bowls and chopsticks in hand, ready to eat.

During dinner, Xia Hong asked his kids, “We’re going shopping for Lunar New Year stuff later with your grandpa and mom. Do you want to come along?”

“Sure!” × 2

That was Xia Yue and Xiao Ling’s answer. Of course, they couldn’t resist going out, as kids never do.

Seeing Xia Yu hadn’t responded, Xiao Ling poked her lightly and asked curiously, “Aren’t you coming too, Er Ge?”

Xia Yu looked at her dad and asked hopefully, “Dad, can I go get my hair trimmed while we’re out? It’s getting kind of long.”

This was the second time Xia Yu had asked Xia Hong about getting her hair trimmed, so he became a bit impatient, “Didn’t I tell you? It’s expensive to get haircuts during the Lunar New Year. We’ll let you go get it done later.”

Grandma chimed in too, supporting her son, “Xiao Yu, be a good kid. Your dad needs to save money for a car. Don’t waste money here.”

“Well… okay then,” Xia Yu said with a hint of disappointment.

After finishing her meal, Xia Yu helped wash the dishes, just as everyone else got ready for their trip to shop.

When Xia Yu finished drying her hands, the shoppers were almost set to depart.

Observing Xia Yu, Xiao Ling walked over and asked again, “Er Ge, why don’t we all go out? You haven’t been back in ages, haven’t you missed the fun?”
