Chapter 20: People Can Really Be Deadly
When Night Star revealed the name of her ability, the atmosphere in the room fell silent for a moment.
Mo Rabbit simply observed without interference, enjoying the drama unfold. After all, she had no business meddling in Night Star’s choices—better to sit back and munch on popcorn. If it meant less work for her, that was a win!
Night Sky snapped back to reality, an oddly nuanced expression on her face.
“Universal b*tt Blaster? Is it one of those scenarios where seven magicians fight over a cup for seven days and nights, summoning seven heroic spirits? Do we need to sacrifice a few heroic spirits to get it started? You know, I could step in as the swordsman… And I know a lucky guy, we could easily sacrifice him.”
Night Star knew exactly what Night Sky was hinting at.
“That’s not the kind of Wish Machine I’m talking about! This is a genuine, certified Wish Machine! Super magical!”
“Umm…”
Night Sky’s expression oscillated between skepticism and intrigue.
“Why don’t you give a demonstration?”
“Alright! What do you want right now? I can conjure it up for you!”
Eager to prove the authenticity of her Wish Machine, Night Star was all fired up!
Night Sky pondered for a moment, inspiration suddenly striking.
“Then how about conjuring a bottle of Coke for me?”
“Sure!”
With that, Night Star made a wish to the Wish Princess, and a bottle of Coke swiftly appeared in her hand!
Seeing this, Night Sky’s eyes widened in shock.
“Wow! That’s amazing!”
Night Sky certainly didn’t think this was a trick of Night Star’s. Some ability users could indeed summon small items like Coke out of thin air. But that was usually done through spatial manipulation. If a seasoned expert saw it, they’d catch on immediately.
And Night Sky had some command over spatial abilities, making her super sensitive to spatial fluctuations. If anyone used spatial manipulation in her presence, she’d be aware of it.
But just now, when the Coke popped into existence, there hadn’t been the slightest blip of spatial distortion, like it was just created out of thin air. It was utterly mind-blowing.
Night Star handed the Coke over to Night Sky.
“Here you go! Your Coke! Pretty impressive, huh?”
Sometimes, it felt great to show off like this. Night Star loved the spotlight.
Night Sky opened the Coke and took a sip.
“Hmm… Not bad. It’d be even better if it were cold.”
“That can be fixed with another wish!”
As Night Star made her inner wish, the Coke in Night Sky’s hand rapidly chilled to perfection.
Feeling the temperature in her hand, Night Sky marveled at Night Star’s powers.
“So, what’s the catch?”
In Night Sky’s experience, the more incredible the power, the bigger the price tag. Many stories about wish capabilities involved some pretty harsh conditions. She’d seen her fair share of dark and convoluted tales.
If Night Star’s powers could grant any wish, there had to be a corresponding price, right?
Night Star was refreshingly candid about it.
“Well… It’s probably tied to the complexity of the wish, and there’s a side effect of drowsiness. That’s about it.”
“Wait, that’s it? No dark or twisted price?”
“Nope!”
“That’s pretty much like having no price at all!”
Night Sky’s jaw dropped in disbelief.
Could there really be a power that could create miracles infinitely? And without limits? What kind of girl from what world is this?
Night Star chimed in defensively.
“Drowsiness is a side effect! Sometimes, I might sleep for a whole week straight without waking up. Like, really knocked out!”
“But compared to miracles, that’s not much of a trade-off, is it?”
“You’ve got a point there.”
“So, that’s ridiculous! No wonder you dare to call yourself invincible. Wish Machines have infinite possibilities!”
Night Sky suddenly felt a bit deflated. She thought she was pretty strong. After slaying the World’s Ender and taking down countless Mist Hidden Beasts while averting disaster after disaster, how did this awesome power still fall short against a Wish Machine with boundless potential?
Sure, Night Sky could occasionally create a miracle or two, but a Wish Machine could whip them up anytime. They simply couldn’t compare.
With such an outrageous ability, why was this silver-haired Loli so timid?
Night Sky just couldn’t wrap her head around it. Even if she defeated every monster and leveled up to max, she’d probably still fall short against even a single wish.
Night Star explained with a sheepish grin.
“Actually, it’s not that unbeatable. In my regular state, there are still tons of things I can’t do. If the enemy is too strong, sometimes my wishes can’t touch them. It’s not quite truly universal.”
“Huh? Can you try to interfere with me then?”
Night Sky’s curiosity was piqued.
“Okay, here goes.”
Night Star tried to wish for interference with Night Sky — for example, casting a “Sleep Spell!” wishing for her to fall asleep right now!
But the Wish Princess didn’t respond to that wish at all.
This indicated that such a wish was far too weak to knock Night Sky out.
Night Sky quirked an eyebrow, “Well? How did it go?”
“Can’t do it! You’re too strong, Night Sky.”
Night Star wore a look of defeat.
“See, I told you~ I’m still very valuable~”
“Hmm… but if I reached my complete form, I bet it could work.”
“Wait, you’re not at your complete form yet?”
Night Sky was once again shocked. She felt like she was at her peak and couldn’t improve any further. She thought Night Star had reached that level too, but turns out she hadn’t?
Night Star shook her head, launching into a mini lecture for Night Sky.
“Not yet! Over where I’m from, we have three levels of mental strength: A, B, and C. Mine’s only at B right now, so I can’t achieve complete universality. It’s only at A that I’d be truly universal, but getting to that stage has irreversible consequences; I really don’t want to step into that terrible territory.”
“What kind of terrible consequences?”
“Well… probably losing myself and existing in some incomprehensible form, being controlled by an unfathomable will, using terrifying powers to create an unknown future. It might lead to a major disaster, or maybe nothing will happen at all. Bottom line? The effect on me wouldn’t be good—probably feels like dying.”
“Ah… that sounds pretty serious. I thought a power like yours wouldn’t have any limits.”
Night Sky pondered this.
“In that case, how would you deal with allies controlled by mysterious powers? You should be in a tough spot now, right?”
Night Star nodded, then shook her head.
“Kind of, but don’t worry! I have some strong backup plans and a pretty high success rate!”
Upon hearing this, Night Sky smiled adorably.
“Then it’s all good! I thought I’d have to clock in for overtime, but as long as you can handle it, it’s fine. Even if you can’t, feel free to ask for my help! For friends, I’m more than willing to put in some extra work!”
“Um, thanks!”
Mo Rabbit watched this unfold, chuckling to herself.
Things just keep going smoothly, don’t they?
With that, the biggest obstacle to bringing back the Group Leader was gone. No wonder they were called Audience Performers!
