Chapter 89: Dinner Party
So, summer Hong rushed back home without stopping to buy any groceries, which basically means tonight’s welcome dinner for Xia Yu wouldn’t be too fancy.
However, just as the family was still basking in the joy of Xia Yu’s return, summer Hong received a phone call. Looking at his face, which still held that goofy grin, it was clear the news wasn’t anything negative.
As expected, after hanging up, summer Hong turned to Xia Yu and beamed, “Little Yu, hurry up and take a shower! Uncle Jiang Bin wants to treat us to dinner, don’t keep him waiting!”
Why did Xia Yu need to shower first? Well, because she had just come back and was sporting some unappealing bloodstains courtesy of the kidnapper. Clearly, she was not fit to attend any dinner party looking like that.
So, begrudgingly, Xia Yu took a quick shower and changed into the brand-new clothes she bought yesterday; after all, attending a dinner party in a shoddy outfit wouldn’t do.
To save time, after Xia Yu finished her shower, Wang Wenjuan personally took charge of blowing out her long hair, styling it into a super cool high ponytail.
Why was it cool, you ask? Well, this hairstyle, combined with Xia Yu’s stone-cold expression, gave her a strangely impressive vibe. But to her family, her expression just made her look kind of dumbfounded…
Next came the family piling into the car.
With everyone heading out, the car was just enough to fit all seven of them, including driver summer Hong, Grandpa, Grandma, Xia Le, Wang Wenjuan, Xia Ling, and Xia Yu.
Grandma got car sick, so the front passenger seat was hers, while Grandpa and Xia Le claimed the two middle seats. As for the three ladies, they squeezed together in the back like sardines.
Xia Ling loved this as she got to squish right next to Xia Yu, especially since Xia Yu smelled all fresh and delightful from her shower — being this close felt fantastic.
As for Wang Wenjuan, watching her daughter and Xia Ling squish together like two besties, she didn’t even know what to say.
Oh well, given the circumstances, she might as well let it slide.
After about half an hour on the road, they finally pulled up to a swanky-looking restaurant that screamed “look at me!”
As soon as they got out, summer Hong was excitedly whipping out his phone to text Jiang Bin. Honestly, knowing someone with such power made him feel like a million bucks.
But knowing his place, summer Hong was aware he couldn’t expect Jiang Bin to give him any favors; he was just happy to be friends, and that was enough.
Before long, summer Hong led the family into a private dining room, and sure enough, just three people were waiting inside — it was none other than Miss Jiang and her family.
At that moment, Miss Jiang was happily sandwiched between her parents, which spoke volumes about her status in their eyes.
However, everything changed when she spotted Xia Yu; she dashed away from her parents, plopped herself down next to Xia Yu, and pulled her into a cozy seat.
Her intentions were crystal clear — she wanted Xia Yu sitting next to her. Maybe because they had been kidnapped together twice or something, she just seemed to have an affinity for Xia Yu.
When had Miss Jiang’s parents ever seen their daughter act this way? But hey, it’s good that their daughter is making friends.
You see, being a young lady, Miss Jiang didn’t have many friends because she knew most of them were just after her family’s money. So did she let them near her? No way! She wasn’t born yesterday.
Looking at Xia Yu, who seemed a bit lost, Jiang Bin and his wife just exchanged amused glances; they figured Xia Yu couldn’t possibly take advantage of their daughter. I mean, they were just two girls, right?
Meanwhile, the less informed summer Hong and his wife grinned as well, thinking how nice it was that their son was getting attention from a girl. What parents wouldn’t be happy about that?
But the one fuming in silence was Xia Ling. She’d been holding onto Xia Yu’s arm and now that another girl had snatched her away just upon entering the dining room, she wasn’t just going to stand there!
Defiantly, she stomped over and plopped herself down on Xia Yu’s other side. After all, Xia Yu was her family! There was no way she was letting some other girl take her away!
Of course, this was just Xia Ling being selfish because she hadn’t spent enough time cuddling with Xia Yu yet. There was no way she would let another girl steal her thunder!
Let’s not forget, Xia Ling was aware of Xia Yu’s situation — enough pain had been endured, and it would be better for Xia Yu not to get involved with Miss Jiang. Besides, the Jiang family was powerful, and they had an intimidating reputation!
As everyone settled, the waitstaff began bringing dish after dish to the table. It was officially time to dig in.
But just as the feast was set to start, Miss Jiang did something that left everyone stunned…
She picked up a few giant prawns, peeled one, and then, without a second thought, fed the shrimp to Xia Yu.
But that wasn’t all. Perhaps because she’d been pampered in the car, Xia Yu, instead of protesting, instinctively opened her mouth and accepted the prawn meat…
It took a moment, but eventually, Wang Wenjuan jumped up, rushing to Xia Yu’s side, putting on a forced smile for the Jiang family and saying, “Kids don’t know better, please don’t mind them!”
Then she tried to pull Xia Yu away, “Little Yu, how could you let someone peel prawns for you? That’s so rude! Come sit with Mommy, I’ll peel them for you!”
Xia Yu, hearing her mother’s words, suddenly realized what she was doing. Oh right, Miss Jiang was a young lady! How could she behave this way? Wasn’t she lowering Miss Jiang’s status? Wouldn’t her parents be upset?
However, just as Xia Yu was about to obediently follow her mother’s lead, an unexpectedly strong little hand snagged her arm — that little hand didn’t belong to anyone but Miss Jiang, of course!
At the same time, Jiang Bin chimed in, “It’s alright, they’re just kids; let them play, as long as they’re happy.”
