Chapter 9 – Don’t Want This Kinds of Stuff at All

Right now, Night Lan was wandering around the base solo.

Cai Xun and Bu Jie left early because they had some reports to submit, leaving Night Lan to sightsee on her own.

But thankfully, before they left, they gave her a high-tech device, which prevented her from getting lost.

However, this high-tech gadget was far more advanced than her nearly outdated phone at home.

Night Lan struggled to figure it out after studying for quite a while.

It contained a super convenient artificial intelligence, one that could answer any questions regarding the Night Watchers, like general knowledge.

To Night Lan, chatting with an AI was easier than talking to some strangers.

So, she asked countless questions that piqued her curiosity.

The AI responded to each one, and Night Lan listened intently.

“So that’s it! Star Eclipses are, in a sense, a huge spiritual pollution? Star Eclipses happen when a Star goes rogue, and humans are like carriers, sealing or restraining Stars. Only after losing control do they unleash terrifying power—so much so that even current technology struggles to solve it. We can only rely on the Night Watchers to handle it…”

As for this last question, there wasn’t a concrete answer, though the AI provided reasonably credible expert speculations.

“Supernovas, I just heard about them—I had no idea they were so terrifying!”

Reading about the incident in the Puppet World made Night Lan shudder, feeling a bit scared.

If she had been there, she would have run as fast as possible and wouldn’t dare touch such things.

Becoming a loveless puppet seemed incredibly scary.

This also made Night Lan realize how absurd it was that there were Out-of-Class Stars.

“I guess I’d better leave this to the big shots. As for me, I’ll just stay back and cheer them on; a clueless newbie like me should just hide behind,” Night Lan muttered, heading towards the cafeteria.

After running at breakneck speed, Night Lan felt unexpectedly hungry. She just ate before stepping out.

“Eat eat~”

While Night Lan was reading about crucial Night Watchers’ info, somebody suddenly ran from the side and crashed into her.

“Ouch!”

“Miaow!”

Two tiny figures fell to the ground, both crying out in pain.

Night Lan rubbed her bottom, almost wailing from the pain.

“Wah…”

She shouldn’t be this fragile, but ever since becoming a loli, she felt weak for no reason. She cried at the slightest bit of distress or pain.

No way!

Get tougher!

Yell back!

Make the person who bumped into her realize that running without looking is very wrong!

Just as Nian Lan was about to speak up, the other voice spoke first.

“What are you doing, miaow! Didn’t you know that running without looking is bad? And you even walk with your virtual screen open—how did you even join the Night Watchers?!”

“Sorry! I messed up!”

Standing up, Night Lan bowed and rapidly apologized, giving up in defeat.

So sorry, dignity, it seems my fault. No way to stay tough.

“Hmph~Don’t think I forgive you, miaow.” The other pouted in apparent annoyance.

Night Lan tilted her head and saw a girl around the same age as herself.

About the same height, almost fifteen years old or so.

White hair with green eyes, cute as can be, and she had a prominent fang too, making her unbearably adorable.

Zero Meow sized up this seemingly younger black-haired loli, having an amusing idea.

“What’s your name?”

“Night Lan.”

“Are you a Night Watcher?”

“Yes, I just joined today. Sorry for breaking the rules,” Night Lan replied earnestly.

Zero Meow smirked adorably.

A newbie loli, how cute!

She looked like a lot of fun!

“That really hurt. If you want me to forgive you, you’ve gotta treat me to a meal. Otherwise, I’ll report your misconduct, hindering the Night Watcher’s efficiency, and you’ll be doomed!”

Zero Meow didn’t actually feel much pain and joked about the second part.

But Night Lan believed it, her eyes widening.

“Huhuhuhu?”

This felt like intimidation. Wasn’t this?

But there was nothing she could do. It was truly her mistake.

Night Lan checked her wallet.

Newbie as she was, she hadn’t earned anything yet. Treating a young girl to a meal wouldn’t cost that much.

“Okay, I will treat you to a meal…”

“Mmm~That’s right~”

Even though she was a cute loli, Zero Meow felt no burden, instead joyous.

“By the way, my name’s Zero Meow. I’m one hell of a Night Watcher, so call me Sensei!”

“Yeah, Senpai Zero Meow, please teach me!”

Seeing such an adorable loli resembling her own physique, Night Lan felt somewhat intimate.

Like they could get along.

Thinking so, Night Lan felt better.

“When can I eat with you?”

“Mmnao? Already think of sharing dinner so soon? That’s cute~ Why don’t we go for…”

Zero Meow abruptly remembered something, interrupting her speech.

“Hold it!”

“What’s the matter?”

“Wait, it’s not time for food! Star Eclipses are here; we must go out to work immediately!”

Zero Meow grabbed Night Lan’s hand and pulled her in one direction.

Caught off guard, Night Lan stuttered,

“Is that Star Eclipses? Real Star Eclipses? I’m still new at this. Can a newbie really participate in a Star Eclipses mission?!”

Zero Meow stopped, asking,

“What type is your Star?”

Night Lan recalled,

“Bright Moon.”

“That’s fine. Let’s charge through, miaou! Don’t worry, I’m here for you!”

Then, Zero Meow dragged Night Lan away again.

“Uh…?”

Night Lan looked dazed.

Wasn’t being a Night Watcher supposed to be about lounging around earning wages?

Now an inexperienced newbie was forced to deal with perilous Star Eclipses? Couldn’t be worse!

Unfair to my faith?!

Dammit! Return my money!

Floating car.

Zero Meow sat in the driver’s seat, Night Lan in the passenger seat.

The former hummed a cheerful tune, whereas the latter looked rather glum.

“Alright, cheer up. We have to gain experience, many skilled seniors will take action. You can just watch from the outer circle. Watching Star Eclipses is the best way to understand them, and it’s the work of a rookie! It’s safe,” Zero Meow said.

“Really?”

“Of course, miaou~”

Hearing this, Night Lan calmed down significantly.

As long as nobody’s soul was involved, she might as well see it as a show.
