Chapter 0: The Answer (10)
==============================
Ready for action, the Male Character and Luo Ying found the Squirrel Butler busy at work in the garden.
“Um, it seems like we haven’t seen the Master lately…”
The Male Character asked.
Without looking up, the Squirrel Butler replied, “The master is busy; it’s normal not to see him for days and nights.”
“Ah, I see. Since you’ve been so hospitable, we won’t disturb the Master.”
This time, to ensure they wouldn’t change their minds halfway through, the Male Character had specifically approached the butler to formally say goodbye, making it hard for them to return without any shame.
Four hours later, as the aroma of lunch wafted through the mansion’s dining hall,
the Male Character and Luo Ying stood bashfully at the door, heads down.
Still no sign of the Master, but the Squirrel Butler cheerfully called them in, “Come on in, guests! Have a seat!”
“Uh, sorry about this. We suddenly noticed something was left behind, so we came back to check,” the Male Character explained, his face slightly flushed.
Next to him, Luo Ying looked like a shy bride, her bangs hiding half of her face.
“No problem, let’s eat first,” the Squirrel Butler said, clearly friendlier than before.
Even the other servants munching away smiled at the two.
That big bunny they’d interacted with previously eagerly came over and pulled the shifty duo into the dining room.
This time, they felt at home, no longer hesitant, chatting happily with the little animals while eating and drinking.
For the next two days, the pair kept repeating the act of leaving and coming back again.
By the third day, they finally decided not to leave the estate anymore.
They enjoyed breakfast guilt-free and then strolled in the garden, waiting for lunch.
It seemed they had forgotten what they were supposed to do, resembling a real couple as they nestled under the lush flowers, whispering sweet nothings that would make anyone blush.
At noon, the Master appeared again, promising to treat them well.
“It seems you’re both enjoying yourselves here. I wonder if you’ve learned our sophisticated human ways?”
Upon hearing the Little Wild Cat’s words, the Male Character and Luo Ying surprisingly didn’t react with resistance like before.
In fact, the Male Character smiled with the confidence of someone who’d just aced an exam. “Absolutely, each day here feels like I’m getting closer to home.”
Luo Ying added, “We truly appreciate the Master’s hospitality these past few days. If there’s anything we can do, please let us know!”
Si Ling nodded, “Alright, it seems you’re really starting to blend in with us humans.
Here’s the deal: at midnight, I need you to help me with a task. Once you’re back, you can stay here forever.”
The pair immediately knelt, expressing their gratitude.
Somehow, they’d grown a newfound respect for this Little Wild Cat barely half their height.
If they followed his orders, they’d be basking in glory!
They could hardly wait for midnight, and this time, not a wink was slept by either of them.
“Good, it’s impressive that neither of you is backing out now. Once your task is done, your otherworldly titles will be erased, and you’ll be reborn as humans,” Si Ling said seriously.
The duo half-knelt before him, showing their loyalty.
“Follow me.”
Si Ling led them into the study in the backyard, casually pulling a few books from the shelf, revealing a hidden door.
“Behind this door, you’ll find a sealed space where our enemy resides. k*ll him and return quickly. I’ll be waiting here.
Remember, you can’t do anything else apart from eliminating our enemy; otherwise, I won’t accept you as real humans anymore.”
They both swore everything would go smoothly. If there was any hiccup, they’d rather end themselves as an apology.
“Okay, go.”
The Little Wild Cat opened the secret door, and a gust of wind rushed at them.
Time to sh**t the arrow; it must be released!
With the Male Character leading and Luo Ying right behind, they zipped through the hidden door towards the lit area at the end of the corridor.
Just a few steps in, they suddenly felt like the passage was pulling back rapidly.
If they didn’t run for it, they’d be sucked back into the dark door, and their efforts would be wasted.
No way! They’d just sworn loyalty in front of Si Ling! No matter how tough the mission, they had to see it through.
They sprinted desperately, matching the speed of the retreating passage.
At the moment they felt solid ground disappear beneath them, a massive palace instantly came into view.
They landed gently, making only the softest of sounds.
Why did this place seem a bit familiar?
But before they could get their bearings, they spotted an old man in rough linen robes seated in the only prominent spot in the palace.
Looks like Si Ling wanted them to k*ll him.
Luo Ying unsheathed her dark light sword, pointing it at the target.
The Male Character drew his weapon too, flanking Luo Ying as they charged at the old man.
Before they could figure out the enemy’s true strength, they aimed for a swift victory, determined not to give the old man any openings.
The old man, indeed not normal, sensed their hostility the moment they made a move. He didn’t even bother to get up, casually deflecting their full-force attacks.
But soon, he muttered “Hmm” and abandoned any plans to retaliate.
This gave the duo a moment to catch their breath, and they leaped at him again from different angles.
But the old man continued to play defense with no sign of countering.
Was he just wasting time?
The Male Character grew anxious; glancing back, he saw that the floating dark door was slowly fading.
If they took too long, they might end up trapped in this space forever.
“Go big or go home!” the Male Character shouted.
Without holding back, Luo Ying unleashed the stored light from her dark light sword with explosive force towards the old man, simultaneous to her shout as she executed her most prized skill.
But the old man moved like an eel, dodging effortlessly among Luo Ying’s attacks.
They couldn’t even touch a hair on him.
d*mn it! Were they really going to bite the dust here today?
Just when they felt hopeless, the old man suddenly halted, his ancient face calm and resolute.
“Go ahead, k*ll me. This time, I won’t resist.”
