Chapter 3: Modern Small World (4)
Five minutes later, all the elites of the Special Operations Bureau gathered together.
Sitting at the central position on the stage was the stunning yet slightly frosty Bureau Director Lin Nan.
The legends about Director Lin were countless.
They said she was a one-woman army who stormed the lair of mutated beings, single-handedly wiping out thirty special criminals above B-grade.
Or that an S-grade criminal, who had been on the run nationwide, was apprehended as soon as they entered Ocean City, shocking the entire special crime field!
And ever since Director Lin took office, Ocean City hadn’t had any A-grade or above special crime incidents for three whole years!
In short, people were pretty sure that if you crowned her the strongest person in Ocean City, no one would dare to argue.
The first lesson for newcomers at the Special Operations Bureau was:
“What the Director says is right! If you think it’s wrong, then you’re definitely wrong!”
【Ding! Your current role-playing degree is 80%.】
What? It dropped from 90% to 80% in just one morning?
Maybe it was because they played too much Landlord game and got too happy, probably because the original Director Lin never had a penchant for games.
However, this didn’t stop her from issuing commands from the stage.
Lin Nan lightly cleared her throat, and the entire venue fell silent instantly; even the Deputy Bureau Director sat straight, showing an impressive level of obedience.
She clicked on the screen and switched to the surveillance footage from the city center park.
“Everyone, please take a look. Have any of you noticed anything unusual?”
Lin Nan used the mouse to point at the cosplayers surrounded by the crowd.
All gazes immediately focused on the big screen.
Although they didn’t spot any issues at first, they thought the cosplayers were very dedicated, especially the props used by those playing half-human and half-demon characters, which looked strikingly real—almost indistinguishable from certain CGI movie designs.
There were also many foreign folks who looked quite European and American, all tall and handsome, donned in shiny armor, wielding ancient-style swords, totally matching the ideal image of elves.
The only thing that struck people as odd was the pair of horns on their foreheads, perhaps a new twist on the elven sub-species from a fantasy film.
Compared to the fierce-looking monster race, the good-looking elves were undeniably more popular among the ladies.
They squealed and snapped photos while uploading countless pictures to social media.
In just half a day, a wave of excitement surged online about the grand cosplay event at the Ocean City central park.
Young people flocked to the park, eager to see those captivating beauties and hunks from the photos in real life.
Lin Nan casually scrolled through some social media feeds, where reports and commentary about this cosplay event were continuously appearing. There were even many streamers doing live broadcasts for those who lived too far away to make it to Ocean City.
After all, such large-scale events would only last a day or two at most; if you missed it, you’d definitely not get another chance.
Lin Nan looked at her female secretary.
The latter immediately stood up and addressed the attendees, “Upon the Director’s instruction, I’ve communicated with all the major cosplay organizations in Ocean City. No one organized such an event, and everyone who appeared in the surveillance footage has no records in the database.
They seem to have appeared out of nowhere, and their identities are very suspicious.”
Lin Nan said, “This is just a preliminary investigation. I believe their danger levels are all above A-grade.”
“Ah… no way, it’s been years since Ocean City has seen so many dangerous individuals.”
“True, and just looking at it, there must be at least two to three thousand people here. How could so many be A-grade special criminals?”
“Maybe their path into Ocean City was a bit special, which is why there are no records…”
The crowd began to whisper among themselves.
Lin Nan snorted, and the venue went completely silent.
“We are only suspecting at this point, but I must warn you all, field personnel, that you must be exceptionally careful while investigating this matter. Stay in constant contact with the headquarters, and if any issues arise, all personnel from the Special Operations Bureau will immediately provide support.
Ocean City has enjoyed several years of peace, and I don’t want to see our hard-earned reputation tarnished because of this matter.
Is that clear?”
Everyone replied in unison, “Got it!”
“Good, now the Deputy Bureau Director will arrange the groups. I need to think of the next countermeasures.”
Lin Nan left the meeting room.
Moments later, those still in the conference room heard melodious Landlord game music drifting down the hallway.
Deputy Bureau Director, “…”
Everyone, “…”
Deputy Bureau Director: “Cough, this must be the Director’s way of seeking inspiration.”
Everyone, “Right, right, that must be it.”
…
The group that had enjoyed takeout felt like they had discovered a new continent.
Whoa, why is this so delicious? Compared to this, their previous meals were practically pig food!
Prince Eric devoured two portions of takeout, ecstatic beyond measure.
“Is this stuff available at night?” he found Fu Yetian and Lady Rong Ji.
Lady Rong Ji nodded with a smile, “Of course. This time you guys have earned your keep. Our followers just can’t compete with your allure.”
Fu Yetian glanced at the sky.
Compared to the winter season of the Asking Dao Continent, this place had a pleasant temperature, a mild breeze wafting in, as if transitioning from spring to summer.
So even though the sun had set, the horizon still glimmered brightly.
“After dinner, we’ll leave right away.”
At that moment, Lady Rong Ji had already learned to pay using her phone, and soon two more delivery cars arrived at the park entrance.
Under the reluctant gazes of their fans, people sat down on the ground, beginning to enjoy the feast that was far superior in taste, aroma, and appearance than anything found in the Asking Dao Continent.
Even the folks from Ocean City thought it was just a standard meal combo.
Once they were done, under Fu Yetian’s orders, all the trash was packed back into the delivery cars.
It wasn’t that they had a sense of environmental responsibility; Fu Yetian just didn’t want to attract attention by littering.
Lady Rong Ji had long controlled the otaku with her Heart-eating Worm. That guy was now like a Q&A machine, and every time Fu Yetian and the others made a decision, they first consulted him, trying to align with the customs of this small world.
For example, where would such a large group go tonight without attracting the attention of the city guards?
The otaku responded, “Are you talking about the police? This many people would indeed be tricky… but coincidentally, I know of an abandoned factory in the east of the city. It’s large enough to accommodate everyone.”
With the otaku’s help, Lady Rong Ji quickly rented thirty double-decker buses.
Taking advantage of the thickening darkness, they smoothly transported all three thousand people to the eastern part of the city.
Of course, all their actions were being closely observed by the field personnel of the Special Operations Bureau, who instructed ordinary police not to interfere.
The Operations Bureau decided they needed to investigate the factory quickly to uncover the truth.
