Chapter 4: The Changing World Line (7)
==============================
(Classmate A): “I heard that moving the military without authorization is a serious violation of military discipline!”
(Classmate B): “Who wouldn’t think so? Besides, that lieutenant colonel made a big fuss over a mere woman. If I were his superior, I wouldn’t stand for it!”
(Classmate C): “You guys are such drama queens! I actually think there’s more to this than meets the eye.”
Ma Yongxin chuckled, “More to it? What more could there possibly be? I’m laying it down right now: if Lin Nan doesn’t get legally punished today, I’ll take her last name!
A jobless bum, just hitching a ride on someone’s coattails, and turns out Lin Nan is secretly keeping a toy boy. Ha! That’s a knee-slapper.”
Forget how lively the class group chat was,
At that moment, three police officers had already stepped out of their cars and were standing aside, worried about accidentally provoking the armed soldiers,
because who wants a few extra holes in their body and no one to complain to afterward?
So, they had reached a consensus: if these soldiers really wanted to forcibly take someone away, go ahead! They wouldn’t stop them. But afterward, they would report exactly what happened. No matter how it was handled from above, they could at least say they did their part.
But surprisingly, that lieutenant colonel leaned halfway into the police car for a chat, and then came out looking helpless.
The girl named Lin didn’t follow him out.
Looks like she knew better than to offend the police.
After all, even if they let her go this time, as long as they had her identity information, they could easily nab her again at the right time.
What, do these Special Forces from outside the city plan to babysit her every day?
It was likely only a matter of days before that hotshot lieutenant colonel lost his job for breaking the rules.
The lead officer scanned the area; the crowd was thick and phone cameras were flashing everywhere. He felt emboldened, wanting to put on a show of bravado against the might of authority.
Moreover, he had already reported this matter to higher-ups, who immediately said they would send support.
So, the lead officer was just biding his time for the reinforcements to arrive and show those guys who the real bosses were in Ocean City—not some wannabe military toughs!
“Director Nie, Director Lin must be feeling wronged.”
Li Cheng mused, thinking about the number one figure who had been lurking in the shadows all this time, now refusing to budge from the police car like a stubborn child, definitely had a deeper reason he wasn’t aware of.
Nie Zhengchu sighed, “Here’s how it all started…”
He briefly recounted the situation regarding Patient 233, “Director Lin is just frustrated that there are so many empty rooms in the Special Care Zone and yet she can’t get 233 switched over, so…”
Li Cheng finally pieced together Lin Nan’s grievances.
Indeed, according to regulations, the Special Operations Bureau had to keep their identities and special abilities hidden, fearing that revealing the truth of the world would panic the average citizens.
This wasn’t just unique to Ocean City; it was a common practice among influential countries worldwide.
Sometimes, letting ordinary people interact with such fields was not a good idea.
But this also raised an issue; due to the need for confidentiality, the employees of the Special Operations Bureau never received the recognition they deserved from society. After all, people don’t just live for a paycheck.
What’s more, most of the employees at the Special Operations Bureau had abilities beyond the norm.
They were willing to be drafted by the state, becoming the vanguard against crime, which itself was a form of dedication.
However, it seemed the Ocean City government took their sacrifices for granted and even suppressed them to some extent. Maybe it was due to number one’s incredible performance over the years, effectively clearing out hidden criminals.
The so-called, “When the birds are gone, the arrows are stored; after the cunning hare is killed, the hound is cooked,” applies here.
Thus, number one had his own grievances, finally understanding her feelings at this moment.
Lin, you just want to vent your frustrations, right? I might not have realized it before, but since I’m here today, no matter what, I’m going to show Ocean City what true organizational power really looks like.
……
Leaning against the police car’s seat, Lin Nan stretched,
suddenly feeling her actions were a bit childish.
Ever since that young, handsome lieutenant colonel appeared, she had sifted through her memory bank for any relevant details about him.
Turns out, years ago, in a training camp, she single-handedly battled the top fifty fighters in the organization and snagged the title of the organization’s NO.1 for at least a decade. Li Cheng, her childhood rival, became her loyal little brother.
Their relationship had been great in that training camp.
So, when he got the directive from the Special Operations Bureau, he was the first to gather people to come catch up with her.
He was so well-meaning just now, and here she was acting aloof. Li Cheng was basically family; why make things difficult for him?
Even if she got taken to the police station, it wasn’t like they would do anything to her. But wasn’t that just wasting time? Especially since the room issue for 233 was still unresolved; why make more trouble?
“Let’s go.”
Lin Nan was just about to get out of the car.
Li Cheng firmly blocked her way, “Director Lin, please be patient.”
Lin Nan: “?”
What’s happening here? You just told me to go, and now that I want to leave, you’re stopping me?
What the heck, this feels like a tongue twister!
Just then, loud police sirens blared in the distance, quickly getting closer.
The onlookers grew increasingly excited.
“Whoa! This is epic! First, the Special Forces come to grab someone, and now those three cops didn’t back down. They stood their ground! Now reinforcements are arriving. Haha, this is turning into a big show!”
“Tsk tsk tsk. I thought that lieutenant colonel was something special, but he’s just put on a show.”
“For real, I’ve been waiting forever! Those thirty-odd soldiers don’t dare move in; they’re just a bunch of cowards!”
“I’m just as anxious! What a waste, no fighting! This would make for great material; ‘The Angry Sea for a Fair Woman’ or something!”
“It’s all going downhill now, huh? Acting all civilized and doing nothing, and now support is here. Let’s see how you handle this! Just go back where you came from, you so-called Special Forces, what a disgrace!”
The onlookers loved the chaos, hoping for a full-blown melee to spice things up.
The more pandemonium, the more topics they would have to chat about, and the photos or videos posted online would rake in more clicks and followers.
Ma Yongxin grinned as he raised his phone, sharing a video where three police cars had stopped and over sixty equally equipped SWAT team members jumped out.
“Haha, things just escalated. That lieutenant colonel who moved troops without authorization is done for. Lin Nan’s last lifeline is gone!
Ah, what a shame—she was once the promising school flower, and now she’s just a wildflower in the fields.”
Heh, serves you right for being blind and not seeing my potential from the start.
I wonder how much she regrets it now.
