Chapter 5: A 0.00001% Chance (Bonus Update)
==============================
“Clang clang clang!”
“Boom boom boom!”
……
In his sleep, Old Drill Wind seemed to hear the sound of gongs and drums, snoring away as his arms and legs trembled rhythmically.
Around the tent where Old Drill Wind was resting, members of the embassy were lounging about, and further out, sprawled all over were the little demons from various caves who had just surrendered to Cold Wind City.
When the night was still and quiet, taking advantage of Old Drill Wind’s slumber, several great demons from different caves secretly gathered to discuss something.
According to the traditional rules of the monster race,
It was perfectly normal for little caves to bow down to bigger caves and switch allegiance.
For the little caves, their faith and loyalty had simply changed targets, and all the big caves needed to do was play backup for them during crucial moments.
Thus, the territories of the little caves remained relatively independent, with personnel separated, much like various warlords under the rule of a big cave.
They originally thought that after robbing the Evil Merman Cave with Old Drill Wind, they would just go home, since they were officially under Cold Wind City anyway.
They never expected this old coot would want to take it up a notch,
To flaunt his grand achievements from this trip, Old Drill Wind rejected all the cave masters’ requests and insisted that everyone follow him back to Cold Wind City to meet the Cold Moon Great King.
This sent the cave masters into a frenzy.
But they didn’t dare confront Old Drill Wind head-on; after all, he had the Cold Moon Great King backing him, a figure capable of mobilizing thousands of warriors from the monster race at a moment’s notice.
So late at night, while Old Drill Wind was in dreamland, these dozen or so cave masters convened to devise a plan.
One great demon furiously exclaimed, “That slimy catfish! He tricked us into robbing the Evil Merman Cave and took all the valuables for himself. And now he won’t let us return to our caves until we’ve bowed down to the Cold Moon Great King!
Just think about it! He’s clearly expecting us to offer all these good things as tribute to Cold Wind City!”
“Yeah!”
“Exactly! If he hadn’t promised we could share the loot, we wouldn’t have decided so quickly to follow him!”
“What a backstabbing scoundrel!”
“How about we just sneak in tonight and stab him, then hightail it out of here? Think about it! With all this gold and treasure, we could go anywhere!”
Red Armored Spider worriedly chimed in, “I’m just afraid that the Cold Moon Great King will come after us…”
“What’s there to be afraid of? The Chaos Forest is so vast; who would know where we’d hide?”
“Yeah! If we just lay low for a bit, when we come out, everything will be calm and we can enjoy ourselves!”
Red Armored Spider was deeply troubled, but everyone else seemed eager to off the old coot and make a quick exit.
He could only sigh, feeling utterly powerless.
After all, when combined, the other cave masters had a legion of two thousand, while he only had three hundred from the Flying Cloud Cave. What could he do against that?
Just as the great demons, armed and ready, prepared to jump Old Drill Wind, a sudden strange phenomenon occurred in the sky. Dark clouds gathered, and lightning flashed loudly.
Startled, the group crouched down, scanning their surroundings.
One great demon, familiar with the area, pointed toward the horizon where lightning continually struck, crying out in terror, “It’s coming from Cold Wind Cave! No, the direction of Cold Wind City!”
The remaining great demons shuddered.
Looking in that direction, it appeared as if a tornado spun, dark clouds swirling frantically around a center, flashing with countless silver snakes of lightning and rumbling with deafening thunder.
“It’s a tribulation! A tribulation is happening!”
One great demon clutched his lower lip, wholly terrified.
What a joke! The only thing that could cause such a chaotic change in the heavens and strike with thunder was a mighty figure undergoing a tribulation!
The great demons exchanged horrified glances, each sharing the same doubt.
Could it be… no way! This can’t be happening!
Red Armored Spider lamented, “No wonder the Cold Moon Great King dares to stand up against White Feather City in the Chaos Forest. I didn’t expect the Cold Moon Great King to be on par with the Great King of the Split Land. How could a mere Evil Merman even be worthy of his attention?”
All the great demons turned to look at Old Drill Wind, still rhythmically trembling in the tent, and hurriedly hid their weapons.
At just that moment, Old Drill Wind awoke.
He blinked his little bean-shaped eyes, puzzled by the crowd outside his tent.
“Oh dear, it’s freezing cold, and with the Angel Master bundling up so little, they’ll catch a cold!”
“Indeed! The health of the Angel Master is always on our minds.”
“We’re just here to check on you, we care too much, right guys?”
“Haha, precisely so!”
“Right, right! That’s exactly what everyone is thinking.”
As they spoke, the great demons quickly dispersed, vanishing in the blink of an eye.
Old Drill Wind blinked, cursing, “Bunch of lunatics.”
Then he promptly went back to sleep.
While all the little demons in the camp focused on the strange happenings in the world above, none noticed a dark figure suddenly dart out of the camp, zipping toward the explosive center of lightning like a gust of wind.
Moments later,
The violent clash of lightning and purple light made everyone involuntarily shut their eyes.
The great demons watched the entire tribulation with a mix of terror, astonishment, and immense satisfaction, and then unanimously decided to head to Cold Wind City.
To be able to meet top-tier great demons and listen to their exhortations was definitely a lifetime honor.
……
After calming down the many great demons led by Cold Moon, they began to leave Cold Wind Cave with their little demons, at which point Lin Nan finally returned home.
As the stone door slowly closed behind her, Lin Nan couldn’t help but quicken her pace.
During this process, she pulled up the system and asked solemnly,
“System, do you know that within that originally fake phenomenon, a real threat suddenly emerged at the critical moment?”
【The phenomenon isn’t purely false; at least it appears real in the eyes of the world.】
“Hey, stop with the riddles and directly answer my question.”
【Apologies, this question cannot be answered by the system.】
“Why not?”
【Because even the system cannot fully control the variables of an entire world; even a 0.00001% chance can become a certainty at some point.】
“I don’t understand.”
【In other words, when the system produced that additional reward for you—the tribulation phenomenon—there might have been an influencing factor at play, one that the system can’t detect.】
“You’re saying someone is out to get me?
And they can manipulate the system to achieve that?”
【Apologies, the system does not understand what you are saying.】
“Alright, I get it.”
Lin Nan knew that even if she kept pestering the system, she wouldn’t get any clear answers. Just knowing this much was already generous of the system, revealing some information for her to speculate upon.
Who would do such a thing?
She tried every means to survive but still couldn’t shake them off!
Couldn’t they give her a chance to live?
