Chapter 162: The Siege of Baihao City (Part 2)
Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh—
The icy wind swept down.
What was already a biting wind, in that moment, sounded like the howls of wolves in the deep mountains, rising and falling, sweeping over the snow-covered plains beneath the army like a forest. The wind twisted around like a playful ghost, swirling the snow and frost around everyone’s feet, blinding their eyes.
“What is—”
Many bewildered warriors slowly tilted their heads up, one hand shielding their faces, clearly feeling the chill, involuntarily beginning to shiver.
In their sight, a small figure at the front raised its right hand above its head.
“Pepé…”
Nearby, Lady Catherine mumbled to herself, wrapped tightly in her raven-feather cloak, her slightly fatigued eyes fixated on her daughter’s back, locking onto that small hand high in the air that shone with dazzling blue light—a glow that faintly reflected in her own eyes, so complex, so dazzling.
“They’re coming, they’re coming…”
She heard Hoover’s excited shout beside her, along with the low strange roars from the hunter and warriors who seemed to know what was about to happen, coming from all directions. Those voices sounded incredibly fervent, mixed with high-spirited battle intent, yet somehow suppressed, as if afraid of disturbing something, the thrill gripping tight in their jaws rippling across the formation, only to be drowned out by an even louder wind.
More people raised their heads.
“Ha…”
At the front, the tiny figure exhaled a puff of white mist, swirling out from beneath the mask. The blue light blooming from the palm sharpened, seemingly like a pillar reaching straight to the snowy sky, and only then did the knights and clerics on the walls realize that the rebellious Northern Army was preparing a full-on assault on Baihao City.
“Everyone!”
“Concentrate the power of the Sin Barrier! Protect the city gate—”
However, they thought that power was only aimed at the city gate.
“Northern Rebels! You’re so stubborn, oblivious even as you dance with d*ath! You’ll soon understand the consequences of openly opposing The Holy Church… You will drag the innocent civilians of the entire Northern Empire into this! I swear in the name of the divine, the Fourth Knight Corps will no longer show mercy to the pawns of Skarlij!”
“HOLY! LANCE! READY——”
Amid the commander’s fervent rallying cry from atop the wall, more golden lights ignited between the battlements, the hum of miracles resonating endlessly as if all of heaven and earth were trembling.
In the blink of an eye, a solid barrier rose before the city gates, countless holy lances floating above the walls, all their tips aimed at the army below, targeting that impossible-to-ignore blue glow.
“From this moment! For those rebellious sinners down there who dare to take another step forward, you will no longer be protected by the surrender laws! No qualifications left for disarming and surrendering!”
“You will be killed on sight—!!!”
“You…”
“Oh heavens, oh divine being above…”
Before that stirring shout could finish, it suddenly fell silent—there atop the high wall, the righteous Captain of Knights’ expression changed rapidly, slowly lifting their head, eyes widening as if witnessing the most horrendous of sights…
Crack, crack, crack, crack, crack—
Boom!
In the sky above, accompanied by an excruciatingly piercing sound of ice exploding, a dark shadow pressed upon the wall, nearly every knight and cleric felt that chilling wind rushing toward them, and they all lifted their heads, widening their pupils one by one.
These people weren’t entirely aware of what happened in the church last night.
Not that they didn’t know their comrades had been slaughtered by the enemy; it was just that they didn’t have a clear understanding of how it unfolded. They hadn’t seen the ice spheres fall or the moment of utter despair that rendered them incapable of even a fight-back thought. They had no idea that all this devastation stemmed simply from a little girl waving her hand—many were still under the impression that it was a trick played by the Northern Army, and the brothers guarding the church had unfortunately walked into a trap.
Such a ridiculous, self-hypnotizing excuse…
Even if they didn’t believe it, what could they do?
Were they seriously going to spread the word that there might be enemies in their ranks far exceeding the ordinary Pope Knights, powerful enough to instantly k*ll hundreds of clerics, rendering them utterly unmatched, and share this news, causing the entire Church Army to spiral into panic overnight, losing all fighting spirit?
Those few knight captains who did witness the carnage in the church chose to bury the truth.
Until this moment.
As countless monstrous ice formations, towering like mountain blades, dozens of meters long and many meters wide, coalesced in the sky, their shadow nearly covered the entire wall, pressing down upon their heads. Even at this point, many knights and clerics still hadn’t figured out what was happening.
They stood, gaping up.
The fierce cries from their Captain of Knights still echoed in their ears, yet their minds went blank in an instant.
The small figure before the enemy army…
Heavens above, he just raised a hand.
He just raised a hand…
And yet, countless sharp icebergs hung suspended above them.
The knights could already envision.
When those icebergs came crashing down, forget about their flesh and bl**d, even the seemingly indestructible stone walls beneath their feet would be shattered into pieces.
Such an enemy…
They had never even heard of.
On the walls, the shouting began to fade into silence.
In contrast, as those colossal ice formations appeared overhead, the Northern Army below, after a brief moment of dazedness, erupted with the most fervent, beast-like roars!
“Boom—”
That roar resonated like thunder cracking in the snowy fields, its speed spreading across the entire expanse, nearly deafening. The Northern warriors exuded an aura of d*ath as they raised their blades, as if trying to scream their lungs out: “Frost Moon!”
“Frost Moon!”
“Frost Moon—!!!”
At this moment, facing the Holy Church knights in their first direct confrontation, the Northern Army surged with their highest morale in two years of war, while the golden-armored knights atop the walls looked up at the vast floating ice formations, hearing the earth-shaking sounds from below, their tightly gripped swords slowly drooped down.
At the same time.
The small figure at the front of the military formation also lowered the raised right hand.
Boom——!!!
There was no gap for anyone to react or catch their breath.
A tremendous bang erupted from the side wall, one towering sharp ice crashing straight down, piercing the wall. Even with such massive bulk, its speed was so fast it was nearly impossible to see with the n*ked eye. The Light Wall of the Sin Barrier above the city walls couldn’t even put up a shred of resistance, being torn to shreds like paper.
And then, the entire wall came crashing down with a “rumble!”
The snowy plain began to tremble, rolling snowflakes scattering like an avalanche mixed with billowing dust. The shocking commotion even momentarily stifled the cries from the Northern Army, as the heavy strike from the icebergs forced a terrifying gap in the city wall. Many knights and clerics were buried beneath the rubble, their uncontrolled holy lances flying aimlessly, and amidst the chaotic sounds, a deep-seated emotion called “fear” suddenly spread through the hearts of those clerics.
“Ahhhh——”
“Oh divine being!!!”
“Stay calm! Do NOT PANIC! We are warriors of the divine, we are noble Church knights!! How can we allow these little ruffians to crush us! Everyone, listen up!! Counterattack, counterattack—”
Boom——!!!!
The second iceberg crashed down, crushing the city tower, and blasted a large portion of the gate into oblivion, along with countless bloody, mangled bodies rapidly frozen into ice blocks, burying them deep into the snowy rubble.
Boom!
Boom boom!!
Boom boom boom boom boom!!!
Next, dozens of icebergs also came crashing down.
Snow and smoke filled the air, and the earth began to shake violently.
The horrifying rumble utterly drowned out the knights’ calls.
