34 Test Your Limits
The next day, the Melkway family arrived at Sky City.
Roswiser had made an appointment with Teacher Selina a few days in advance—the same one who took Noia’s school enrollment photo.
When Selina saw the bustling group of seven, she was genuinely shocked.
Typically, a dragon family consists of two to three members, and definitely not more than five.
But this family… those in the know would think they were there for a family portrait; those who didn’t would assume they were a team heading out to tackle a super S-level dangerous species!
But no matter how many people showed up, Selina could rely on her professional skills to capture the perfect family portrait for them.
After some to-and-fro, Selina informed Roswiser that it would take until evening to develop the photos.
In the meantime, the Melkway family began to wander around Sky City.
Isar and Grandma Veronica quietly lagged behind, distancing themselves from the front where Roswiser, Leon, and the kids were.
“Grandma, after chatting with you last night, I’ve decided to figure out my brother-in-law’s origins,” Isar whispered.
Grandma Veronica, having anticipated this, knew her eldest granddaughter was always action-oriented and never just a flash in the pan.
“How do you plan to investigate?”
“Didn’t we list a few likely races yesterday? Let’s start with those.”
Isar said, “We can test my brother-in-law based on the traits and characteristics of each race and deduce his origin from his performance. What do you think, Grandma?”
Grandma Veronica gazed at Leon’s back, her thoughts stirring, and after a moment of silence, she replied, “Alright. Which race do you plan to start with?”
Isar thought for a moment and said, “Let’s start with… the Garuda race.”
Grandma raised an eyebrow. “Do you know much about that race?”
Upon hearing this, Isar grinned mischievously, sidled up to her grandma, and asked, “Grandma, did you notice anything different about me today?”
Grandma looked at her granddaughter’s beautifully crafted face, gave her a once-over, and finally focused on her eyes. “You’ve got dark circles under your eyes.”
“Right~”
Isar laughed, “I stayed up late last night researching the biological traits of those races, just so I could test my brother-in-law today!”
Grandma shook her head with a wry smile. “If you put that serious energy into tribe development, the Red Dragons would have already made it to the top tier of dragon races.”
Though Grandma said that, Isar’s Red Dragon clan was still quite prominent among all dragon clans, right alongside Roswiser’s Silver Dragon clan.
Her words were merely a parent’s hopes for their child.
Isar waved her hand, returning to the topic.
“The Garuda are a race that dominates the skies, boasting an incredible ability for dynamic vision and night vision.”
“My brother-in-law is really skilled, his close combat level is super high, so his dynamic vision must be quite impressive.”
“Well… I want to test his night vision abilities.”
Veronica nodded. “So how do we do that?”
Isar’s eyes twinkled with mystery as she stopped in her tracks and pointed at a shop on the roadside. “Look, there!”
Grandma followed her granddaughter’s gesture and saw—
A haunted house?
“You think you can figure out your brother-in-law’s lineage with a kiddie attraction like that? Isn’t that a bit naïve, Isar?”
In their long lifespan, dragons had faced countless dangers and unknowns. Even the most laid-back clans had weathered their fair share of storms.
So, ‘haunted houses’ were mostly meant for young dragons and those who hadn’t ventured out into the world yet.
Isar shrugged. “Of course, I know a haunted house won’t frighten my brother-in-law, but the key is not to scare him! The environment inside the haunted house is perfect for testing night vision. When we go in, if he navigates it like it’s a walk in the park, then there’s definitely something fishy about his lineage.”
Isar’s idea did have some merit.
Dragons were indeed an almost perfect race in the continent of Samel, but they had some trivial little flaws.
For example… their vision.
More accurately, their—night vision abilities.
Dragon pupils are vertically slit, resembling a narrow fissure.
This eye structure allows them to precisely capture every movement of their opponents and immediately lock onto prey while moving at high speeds.
But the downside is that this vertically slit pupil can’t absorb a lot of light, especially at night, when their vision decreases slightly.
(In their humanoid form, the pupil shape changes slightly, but it doesn’t change the dragon race’s night vision shortcomings.)
Of course, this doesn’t mean dragons become blind at night.
The so-called ‘weak night vision’ is merely in comparison to their other top abilities.
In a dark environment like a haunted house, even those dragons who have weathered many storms can hardly see their surroundings.
Isar wanted to take advantage of this to test her brother-in-law’s bloodline.
“Alright, we’ll do it your way.” Grandma Veronica agreed.
Isar was slightly surprised. “Oh, Grandma, I thought you wouldn’t want to join in on the fun.”
“Hah… just think of it as stirring up a bit of excitement in this otherwise monotonous old age.”
Veronica gazed at Leon’s back, lowering her voice. “Besides… I’m genuinely curious about what kind of man Little Luo married.”
With the plan set, Isar immediately called the others to join her at the haunted house.
As soon as the kids heard they were going to a haunted house, they were all bouncing off the walls with excitement.
Noia: Great, I’ll definitely act calm in the haunted house, so everyone can see I’m an adult!
Moon: Awesome, when I see a ghost, I’ll just dart into my sister’s arms!
Little Light: Fantastic, I’m going to scare the ghosts!
Seeing her daughters so enthusiastic, Roswiser and Leon had no objections.
“I won’t join the fun, it’s too hard on my heart at my age. I’ll wait for you at the exit,” Veronica said.
“Okay, Grandma.”
They purchased their tickets, and the staff reminded them:
“Please refrain from using Dragon Flame or other illuminating magic inside the haunted house! If you can’t find your way out, chant the ‘spell’ on your ticket, and a ‘little elf’ will guide you out!”
Leon looked down at the ‘spell’ on his ticket.
Got it.
Safety spell, right!
I’ve been planning to come up with a safety spell with Roswiser too, or else this Mother Dragon’s S-level attributes might awaken too much, and I won’t be able to handle it.
Lost in thought, Leon took Moon’s hand and walked into the haunted house with the others.
Inside, the environment was indeed just as Isar had predicted—pitch black, where they couldn’t see their hands in front of their faces, relying only on flickering ambient lights to vaguely discern their direction.
“Sister~ Sister, where are you?”
“I’m right here.”
“Where’s here? I can’t see you, I’m all alone and so scared, boo~”
“You were holding Dad’s hand when you came in, I saw you.”
“……”
“Dad! Can I throw a hook punch at the ghost uncle?”
“Uh, that might involve some medical compensation issues…”
“Hey, can we cut the dad jokes at a time like this? It really ruins the atmosphere!”
“Where’s the way out? Where’s the way—ah, what’s that green thing in front?”
“What green—ah, oh no! A ghost!! Can’t we use magic? Dad, quick, set that thing on fire!”
In the darkness, everyone was in chaos.
“Mother Dragon, are you… scared?”
“Do you think I would be scared by such childish things?”
“Then why are you holding my hand?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, it’s not me.”
“Then who is it?”
“It’s~~~ me~~~”
“Whoa, what the—”
General Leon almost lost his mind, nearly yelling at the top of his lungs.
After the first wave of scares was over, the Melkway family continued exploring alongside the other family nearby.
Next came a few more jump scares, and everyone was getting somewhat used to it.
But the complete darkness was truly difficult to navigate.
Furthermore, besides moving slowly, there were other little problems—
“Leon, if you step on my tail one more time, I swear I’ll cut off yours!”
In the darkness, Roswiser bit out through gritted teeth.
Leon chuckled, lowering his voice, “Well that’s silly, I don’t have a tail.”
“I mean the one in front.”
“……”
Leon felt a chill run down his spine and quickly held Moon’s hand—after walking so far, who knows if he was still holding Moon or someone else’s hand! But whoever it was, getting out was the priority—he hurried toward the exit.
After some more misadventures, everyone finally made it through the haunted house.
The other family, still buzzing with excitement, vigorously debated which ghost was the scariest.
Leon looked down to make sure his precious Moon was still with him.
Phew, good, he hadn’t lost his daughter.
Then he turned back to find Noia coming out slowly, her small face completely expressionless, utterly unfazed.
Leon blinked, seemingly realizing something, and looked around. “Little Light, where are you?”
“I’m right here, Dad.”
Leon followed the sound to see Little Light emerging from the haunted house, dragging a ‘ghost’ by its collar.
“He said I was super cute and wanted to hug me, and then I activated my hook punch mechanism, and then… he passed out.” Little Light said innocently.
The staff member at the exit twitched slightly at the corners of their mouth, then sighed, “Is this the nth time this month? Ah, whatever, report a workplace injury.”
Roswiser swatted Leon’s b*tt with her tail, complaining about how he stepped on her tail in the haunted house, balabala.
Isar stood nearby, watching this scene with a furrowed brow.
Grandma Veronica stepped up, “How did it go?”
Isar shook her head. “It shouldn’t be the Garuda race.”
“Oh? So quickly certain?”
“Yup.”
Isar quietly grabbed her own tail, a look of mournfulness on her face,
“In the haunted house, my brother-in-law stepped on my tail 11 times, stepped on Little Luo 23 times, and the family next to us 48 times. With this kind of eyesight, please don’t insult the Garuda.”
Grandma chuckled, covering her mouth, “Alright, alright. So what’s the next race to test?”
Isar turned to Leon, and with a sigh, said,
“Thunder Elf.”
