62. My Male Protagonist!
3/40
The protagonist…
On the way to the Girls’ Dormitory with Ning Chu, Wen Yang contemplated the meaning of those two words.
This isn’t a TV show or a novel; where are the protagonists in real life? The Earth spins just fine without anyone special.
Maybe it’s Ning Chu’s way of boosting his confidence or something?
After all, during his confession, he had revealed his insecurities due to his family background, and Ning Chu particularly disliked his lack of confidence.
He took a deep breath. No matter how things turned out, as long as it was Ning Chu’s request, he would give it a shot.
“This is Xinya’s balcony!”
After circling around the front entrance of the dormitory building, Ning Chu reached the back, peering through the iron railing that was almost two people high, looking towards the balcony not far away. “Because it’s on the first floor, it sure is convenient for perverts.”
Wen Yang nodded and surveyed the area around him.
It was basically the same as the Boys’ Dormitory; although the dormitory was surrounded by protective iron railings to prevent students from sneaking in and out after lights out, most of the barriers were damaged, with large gaps wide enough for an adult to slip through.
They said it was the delivery guys doing the damage.
He set down the bedding he was carrying, squeezed through the railing, crossed a couple of bushes, and arrived at Yan Xinya’s balcony.
“Ah!”
Inside the balcony, Lily had just exited the bathroom and saw a big man standing outside, letting out a shriek.
“……”
“What’s going on?!” Yan Xinya rushed out, wearing boxing gloves on both hands. “Did you see a panty thief? I’ll beat him up!”
However, upon seeing Wen Yang, the Wolf Girl deflated instantly. “Wen Yang~ Where’s Ning Chu?”
“Behind.”
Yan Xinya stood on tiptoe, peering far into the distance and waving her hand to Ning Chu.
“I’m coming in through the front door!” Ning Chu’s luggage couldn’t fit through the railing’s gap, so she stumbled away, dragging her bags.
Wen Yang was carefully examining the surroundings and details of the balcony.
This balcony was not high off the ground, just a few dozen centimeters away. Although there were anti-theft windows, anyone looking to steal clothes just needed to nimbly scale the window and reach in to grab the drying laundry.
“We have already hung our underwear in there to dry.” Yan Xinya crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, complaining, “Yet they still keep disappearing.”
The underwear was hanging above the sink, deep in the balcony, where no arm, no matter how long, could reach.
“What about the surveillance?”
“We did find footage of the underwear being stolen, but it was pitch black, and we couldn’t see anyone—just a whoosh, and it vanished.” Yan Xinya threw her hands up. “Does stealing underwear require night vision gear or something?”
“Hmm.” Wen Yang looked down at the little black teddy bear that had snuck over to his feet. “Could it be a cat, dog, or bird?”
“Impossible, right? What would they want with underwear?”
“Good point.”
Yan Xinya heard the door opening and turned her head to see Ning Chu bringing her luggage inside.
“What happened? No luck?” After putting down her bags, Ning Chu hurried over to the balcony. “What’s the situation?”
Wen Yang shook his head helplessly, wanting to give up, but when he saw her face full of hope, he changed tactics. “Was there any other underwear stolen? I’ll go check it out too?”
“Room 107 has also been hit a few times, plus—”
“Not happening!”
But Ning Chu passionately protested.
“What’s wrong?”
What if he actually caught the pervert?! Wouldn’t that make him famous at school!?
Due to the sports meeting, he had encountered a plot girl and several fan girls just that Monday morning. If he became notorious for catching a pervert, how would Ning Chu live her life anymore?
Would she have to live in fear all day? Her body wouldn’t be able to handle it!
“Whatever, it’s a no-go!”
If Wen Yang found any clues here, he could shift the blame to Yan Xinya, keeping his name out of it, but he couldn’t hide it if he investigated elsewhere.
“Fine… This dog is so annoying.”
“What dog?” Ning Chu peeked over the balcony, spotting the little teddy bear circling around Wen Yang. “A stray dog?”
Yan Xinya nodded. “Yeah, I usually feed it a bit when I see it. It’s quite friendly.”
She followed Ning Chu and leaned over, playfully calling out to the teddy: “Little Black!”
The teddy bear perked up as soon as it saw Yan Xinya, its eyes sparkling, then it bounced high and jumped into the balcony, almost from the ground!
“What the—! A dog can jump that high?!”
Ning Chu was startled and instantly scooted back into the dormitory, flinching. As a kid, she had been chased by dogs all over the village, and the trauma still haunted her.
The others were equally shocked by the little teddy’s jumping prowess, staring wide-eyed as it affectionately rubbed against Yan Xinya’s pant leg before leaping onto the sink and snatching the underwear hanging above it, dashing off on its little legs.
“Ah?”
Everyone was dumbfounded, watching the teddy jump off the balcony and dart into the bushes, disappearing.
“Panty thief!” Yan Xinya pressed her face against the anti-theft window, pointing at the bush, infuriated, “I feed it breakfast every day! And it steals my underwear!”
“Ah? Where? Where?” Ning Chu flustered and rushed back to the balcony, wielding a broom as her weapon.
“That dog!”
“Eh?”
Wen Yang, feeling at a loss, asked, “What now? Should we catch it?”
“……” Yan Xinya was furious, taking a few deep breaths to calm down, but then she suddenly realized something, her face turning beet red, stammering as she ducked back into the dormitory, “Forget it.”
“What’s wrong?” Ning Chu looked at Lily, who stood next to her with a confused expression.
Lily, realizing, quickly leaned closer to Ning Chu and whispered, “Her… it’s that time of the month.”
“Ah?” Although Ning Chu still didn’t get it, Lily’s shy demeanor caused her to turn and enter the dorm.
Ning Chu looked over at Wen Yang on the balcony.
“Look at you, solving problems as soon as you arrive.”
“Mainly because that dog acted on the spot…”
Ning Chu had previously worried about moving into the girls’ dormitory being akin to entering a lion’s den, but now she felt much more at ease.
“This is what being a protagonist is about~”
Protagonist powers sure are effective!
Wen Yang paused, hesitantly responding, “What protagonist?”
In a good mood, Ning Chu leaned on the balcony railing, leaning forward with her little b*tt up, teasingly grinning, “Just a child of the world, blessed by the heavens~”
“Isn’t that a bit exaggerated?” Wen Yang awkwardly scratched his hair. “Just good luck.”
“Luck? Can it be that simple? You’re my protagonist now! Be confident! What could possibly stand in your way?”
“Your…”
Wen Yang’s face instantly turned beet red, and Ning Chu froze for a moment, realizing the ambiguity in her words.
She often thought of Wen Yang as her male protagonist, and while that was true, saying it out loud felt almost like a confession.
“Don’t think too much! I’ll go fix my bed! You better hurry back, too!”
As she watched Ning Chu dash into the dormitory, Wen Yang pondered thoughtfully.
I am Ning Chu’s male protagonist…
In Ning Chu’s world, am I the most important person to her?
