051. Part-time Job
In the end, Wen Yang chose the grueling street marketing job. After all, it was on the bustling main street in the city, with no risk of secretly flirting with girls—just the unbearable heat and less-than-ideal working conditions.
Ning Chu, feeling a bit sour about his feminized body and his “little buddy” becoming a “little bug,” sulked but still hopped on the bus to the city center with Wen Yang.
At this rate, by the time his well-nurtured black bean turns into a catgirl to repay him, he might already be a girl himself!
“Looks like it’ll take about two hours.”
Sitting side by side in the back row of the bus, Wen Yang snuck a glance at Ning Chu’s chest.
“Two hours…?”
“Not too bad, there’s air conditioning. Why don’t you take a nap so you don’t feel tired later?”
Ning Chu still looked a bit out of it, lethargically resting his head against the window, his head bobbing gently with the bus bumps.
“You’re… in a bad mood, huh?”
“Uh-huh.”
Wen Yang thought carefully. He wasn’t sure why Ning Chu was feeling down, so he tentatively asked, “How about I treat you to some milk tea? Something sweet might cheer you up?”
“Forget it.”
Coming from this broke guy who usually wouldn’t even spring for a drink, milk tea was a stretch.
Ning Chu yawned and closed his eyes.
“I haven’t thanked you for last night yet…”
“No need to thank me!”
Suddenly raising his voice made Wen Yang freeze. It dawned on him that Ning Chu was still upset over last night, where he had defied Ning Chu’s advice, got drunk, and ended up drugged and unconscious.
“From now on, I’m not drinking anymore!”
“Not my problem.”
With that little temper tantrum, one might think he was a little girl at first glance.
“I’m taking a nap, don’t bother me.”
Yawning, Ning Chu leaned back against the seat, shutting his eyes.
Last night he had stayed up late as usual—researching Little Emperor Wen, gaming, binge-watching dramas—before he knew it, it was already dawn.
Unfortunately, no matter how much he studied Little Emperor Wen, his black bean was totally unresponsive. Today he even discovered it had turned into a little bug.
Such a tragedy~
Putting aside his plans to help Zhang Shaoqing pursue Ling Ling, his main focus was still on preventing the male protagonist’s… activities.
As he pondered, his consciousness gradually slipped into darkness.
Wen Yang suddenly felt a heavy weight drop onto his shoulder. Turning to look, he found Ning Chu leaning against him at an angle.
He didn’t think much of it, but the scent belonging to Ning Chu was a bit stronger now.
Thinking back, outside of that drunken night, this seemed to be the most intimate contact he’d had with Ning Chu… Even though it seemed they were on friendly terms, Ning Chu had always kept a certain distance from him.
With the distance close, observing Ning Chu’s “chest muscles” became easier.
His gaze drifted down, through the wide neckline, where he could vaguely see a pair of snowy little hills.
“That doesn’t look like chest muscles at all…” His gaze snapped away like it had been electrocuted, and the corners of Wen Yang’s mouth twitched, feeling a thrill and a pang of guilt as if he were peeping at a girl.
He suddenly remembered the rumors Lin Li had spread in their class group:
Actually, Ning Chu was a girl who had sneaked into the boys’ dorm just to be his roommate because she liked him.
No way, she can’t really be a girl, can she?
Wen Yang’s gaze drifted back to Ning Chu’s face.
Unknowingly, that youthful boyish face had transformed into a girlish one; though the masculine traits between his brows were still evident, compared to other girls who pursued him, Ning Chu’s looks were pretty close.
As for the figure… that little bit of “chest muscle” was hardly worth mentioning; translated into a bra size for girls, it might only be an AA cup.
However, combining that masculine personality and way of handling things with a feminine appearance made Wen Yang feel that Ning Chu was far more attractive than those girls chasing after him.
At least Ning Chu would play games with him, even if he completely stunk at it.
Wen Yang looked at Ning Chu with increasing fondness, trying his best to keep his upper body steady so that Ning Chu could rest comfortably against his shoulder.
Inhaling the subtle, elegant fragrance emanating from Ning Chu, even the dull two-hour bus ride didn’t seem so bad…
“Wake up, we’re here.”
“Huh?”
Not knowing what dream he’d been having, when Ning Chu lifted his head, Wen Yang noticed a trail of drool trickling down the corner of his mouth.
His hair was a bit messy, his face was filled with the confusion and drowsiness of waking up, and his large eyes looked a bit dazed, with a bewildered expression that made him seem easy to tease.
“Where are we?”
“Next stop is ours.”
Ning Chu gradually came to his senses. He squinted and stretched, finally waking up.
Looking around the bus, he realized it was packed with passengers, and his dazed gaze sharpened as he quickly scanned all the female passengers with a hint of caution.
Thank goodness, even in the realm of Little Emperor Wen, there weren’t that many creepy guys.
“Time to get off.”
“Okay!”
Following Wen Yang, he stood up, squeezed past the crowd, and exited through the back door.
As soon as he got off, the scorching heat hit him, and Ning Chu quickly jogged into the shade of a tree, curiously surveying the city center.
Above was a massive overpass, and in the distance, tall buildings were sprouting up like mushrooms, with a stream of cars flowing continuously.
“Lots of people…”
Glancing at the crowded sidewalks, Ning Chu couldn’t help but frown.
Everything around felt unfamiliar, combined with the countless creeps lurking in the shadows of Little Emperor Wen, a sense of unease began to creep into his heart.
Fortunately, Wen Yang was right beside him.
As long as he stayed next to the male protagonist, he probably wouldn’t run into any strange dangers.
“Where are we going now?” Ning Chu sidled up to Wen Yang, looking up at him.
“You have no clue where we’re headed? And you still came out with me, not afraid I’d sell you off?”
He paused for a moment but firmly shook his head.
Neither the harem hero from the book nor the innocent guy in front of him would do such a thing.
If it were Zhang Shaoqing saying something like that, Ning Chu would’ve turned and run.
But! Why does he look at me so softly now?!
Feeling a chill run down his spine from Wen Yang’s gentle gaze, Ning Chu twitched at the corner of his mouth and turned his head to hide his awkward expression.
Why does this feel more and more off?
Did I say something wrong?
“Come with me, we’re promoting an app this time. We’ll first go to the company for a briefing and then do the promotion at the subway entrance, where the foot traffic is heavy.”
“Got it.”
Ning Chu was short; although his legs were proportionally long, compared to Wen Yang’s tall legs, he still came up short. He could only jog to keep up with Wen Yang’s pace.
“What time do we start and finish?”
Ning Chu hadn’t really grasped the specifics of the part-time job; he had simply come along to “monitor” Wen Yang’s romantic endeavors.
“Just complete thirty download registrations to clock out. Three hundred in cash on the spot, and there are bonuses for exceeding targets.”
Wen Yang glanced back at Ning Chu, who was leaning forward, his little legs scurrying to keep up, sometimes needing to run a few steps just to match Wen Yang’s strides.
He slowed down, smiling as he said, “Just say if you can’t keep up.”
“It’s fine, I can manage.” Ning Chu’s eyes lit up. “Only thirty? We can head back really quickly then?!”
