536. Night
In fact, with Ning Chu’s current looks, she has a huge advantage in the job hunting game.
She usually doesn’t bother with makeup and her outfits aren’t exactly runway-ready, but even so, when she walks down the street, it’s like she’s casting a spell—most people can’t help but stare. She’s not very tall, but her figure is delicate and slender, making her look like a character straight out of a comic book.
Whether it’s a front desk receptionist job, a model gig, or a live-streaming opportunity… during her job search, similar offers constantly popped up in her DMs.
But once upon a time, as a man, she wasn’t a fan of jobs that required her to put her face out there and rely on looks and body to make a living.
She hated the predatory glances from men; on a busy street, as long as they weren’t overly blatant, she usually wouldn’t notice, but work was a whole different story.
Just a couple of weeks have flown by, and with Wen Yang’s job falling into place, Ning Chu was starting to feel a little anxious.
Usually, she would take her time in the mornings, tidying up her bed sheets and comforters to erase the traces of the previous night before venturing out for interviews in the afternoon. But now, whether it’s morning or evening, she’s constantly out and about.
“How about just starting as a customer service rep… not working at all isn’t an option.”
After a long day of running around, she returned to her rental apartment, plopped down at her desk, and begrudgingly scrolled through her phone, muttering to herself.
“The salary is acceptable, and a nine-to-six schedule shouldn’t be too prone to overtime, plus I’ll be in an office instead of facing customers.”
She always gets a bit of anxiety around strangers, but customer service just means making phone calls and typing away, which she can definitely handle as a keyboard warrior.
“And there isn’t a lot of technical stuff, training will cover that when you start.”
Put nicely, she’d be a customer service rep; said bluntly, she’d be a punching bag.
Ning Chu laid her head on the desk, half her face buried in a cushion, checking various company websites for customer service job offers and their benefits and requirements.
As the surrounding darkness crept in and her belly began to protest with loud growls, she abruptly looked up at the window. Outside, the sky had turned pitch black, and the city was aglow with dazzling lights, but Wen Yang still hadn’t returned.
“He usually comes back by six-thirty at the latest…”
Wen Yang usually finishes work around five-thirty and can make it home in half an hour by subway.
Surely, the subway can’t get stuck in traffic, right?
Ning Chu stood up and turned on the lights, straining to hear any footsteps in the hallway, pouting with disappointment.
That wasn’t Wen Yang’s footsteps.
She glanced at her phone and discovered that Wen Yang had messaged her at five, giving her a heads-up.
“Company gathering tonight, might be a bit late. Don’t forget to eat early.”
She had a mild case of OCD and couldn’t stand seeing red dot notifications, so she’d turned off the alert on her messaging app, which is why she only saw it now.
“Got it, come back early.”
With that message sent, Ning Chu couldn’t muster the energy to go downstairs. She stretched and languidly collapsed on her bed, browsing her phone for nearby takeout.
“Suddenly not hungry anymore…”
She didn’t find anything appealing and lost her appetite altogether, tossing her phone onto the bedside. She covered her forehead with her hand and blankly stared at the dim yellow light.
Without Wen Yang at home, she didn’t know what to do with herself.
Usually, they’d squish together at the tiny desk for dinner, swapping funny stories or gripes about the day, and then jump into a few rounds of gaming together.
By eight or nine, she’d be perched at the head of the bed, typing away while fending off Wen Yang’s teasing, and occasionally, overwhelmed by his antics, she’d toss her laptop aside, stick her b*tt in the air, and plead for mercy like a trapped fish.
At around eleven or twelve, she’d wash up and go to bed, and only then would Wen Yang make his serious move. No amount of begging would help once her brain had hit the shutdown button.
Another fulfilling night just passed, not only in life but also in her belly.
Yet tonight is just plain boring~
Without Wen Yang around, not only did Ning Chu lack an appetite, but even the thought of gaming or writing slipped her mind. She felt lethargic, as if all her bones had melted away, unable to muster any energy.
She was still thinking about sharing the weird company she encountered today, the latest supermarket discounts, and that delicious snack she scored…
With a sigh, she rolled around on the bed for a bit, finally flattening herself down on her chest like a dead fish.
“……”
The door swung open, and Wen Yang shuffled in, reeking of smoke and alcohol, but instinctively softened his footsteps.
He quietly shut the door and locked it, standing by the bed, staring at the sight of Ning Chu sprawled out on the mattress.
The little succubus’s sleeping position was a sight to behold; she was still in her casual clothes, but they were all ruffled up, exposing her soft belly and shimmering skin. Her legs dangled off the bed, and one hand rested on her chest while the other clutched a corner of her outfit.
“Doesn’t know how to cover up, didn’t change clothes, didn’t even take her shoes off.”
Wen Yang sighed, dropping his briefcase, and squatted down to carefully remove Ning Chu’s shoes.
A slender tail adorned with heart shapes stealthily looped around his wrist.
“Awake?”
“Hmm… how did I fall asleep?”
Her hoarse and muddled voice sounded adorably cute, causing Wen Yang to chuckle, “You must have been exhausted!”
“It’s not like that; I just fell asleep waiting for you.” Ning Chu stretched on the bed, arching her back a few inches, letting out a soft whine, “Ah~ what time is it~”
“Just past nine.”
“You’re back so late…”
“A bunch of us were singing karaoke; I had a drink and came back.”
She suddenly flipped over to sit up, nearly knocking her head into Wen Yang’s stomach. Awkwardly turning her head away, she wiggled her b*tt to give him some space, wrinkling her nose in distaste: “You smell like smoke and alcohol… how much did you drink? Was there a girl with you?”
“I didn’t drink that much; look, my face isn’t even red.”
“The key point is the girl!”
“I was with a bunch of guys…” Wen Yang tried to defend himself, but Ning Chu already had her nose poked out towards him, sniffing around, forcing him to admit, “They called a few girls to join for drinks, and I bolted home.”
Ning Chu definitely caught a whiff of perfume on him, and she turned her head away in dissatisfaction: “I waited so long I fell asleep, and you were out partying…”
“It was just dinner, and we had a drink at the karaoke place.”
Truth is, her displeasure wasn’t really about Wen Yang being around other girls—those things are unavoidable, and he’s been doing quite well.
It was being left alone at home that got to her!
“I’m cold and hungry, all alone at home~”
She mournfully rubbed her eyes, the post-sleep tears kicking in instantly—just a gentle rub and a few drops tumbled down.
Wen Yang panicked: “No! I won’t go next time; I’ll just stay home and keep you company…”
“You’ve got to win me three games in a row to earn my forgiveness~”
“……”
Just as he reached out to hug the little succubus, his hand hesitated mid-air. He silently watched as Ning Chu smirked at him, rolled her eyes, and spun around, heading towards the bathroom.
“Wait! I haven’t forgiven you yet!”
“I’m just washing my face; if we don’t win three games tonight, I’m not going to sleep.”
Ning Chu dashed after him to the bathroom door, poking her head inside: “Don’t let it affect work tomorrow~”
“It’s fine; after all, you can’t handle more than three games.”
“I meant the games!”
Wen Yang feigned ignorance, looking up: “Right, I was talking about the games too. Winning just one game would keep us up until dawn, and you’d already be out like a light by then.”
