By the time they reached the street behind the school, it was already 8 PM. The street was still bustling with students shopping, and the restaurants were nearly packed. However, as Lin Nan followed Zheng Qian into the alley, she suddenly noticed how much quieter it became.
The alley was an urban village, full of self-built buildings. The locals seemed to enjoy giving the houses a bit of a makeover before renting them out to students. Although the school had strict rules against living off-campus, there were always students sneaking out to stay in such places.
After winding through the alley for about ten minutes, they finally arrived at a small four-story building.
Lin Nan looked around and spotted an old man smoking on a bench at the far corner of the alley.
This was the first person they had seen since entering the alley.
“There are three rooms on this floor, but it’s a bit off the beaten path. If you want to order takeout, you’ll have to go out to the main street,” Zheng Qian explained as he pulled out his keys and unlocked the iron gate. “It’s pretty quiet here. I rented a place nearby when I was a senior in college, but I couldn’t find a good job, so I decided to take the graduate exam instead.”
“Graduate exams are good…” Lin Nan didn’t really know much about graduate school, so she just threw in some compliments.
She felt a bit nervous since, ever since they entered the alley, it was just her and Zheng Qian alone, and now stepping inside the building made her feel even less safe.

Zheng Qian led Lin Nan into the stairwell and introduced, “The room is on the top floor. If I’m not mistaken, there’s a senior intern living next door. By the way… is that a hint of milk I smell?”

Lin Nan quietly stepped back two paces, blurting out, “It’s probably just that I’m used to drinking milk every morning.”
“Really? I thought someone spilled milk on the stairs.”

The girl’s face slightly reddened.
She realized that even though Zheng Qian had said a lot of strange and perverted things today, he hadn’t actually acted excessively. Most likely, she was just thinking too dirty!
Since she usually lived on the fourth floor of the dorm, climbing to the fourth floor wasn’t too much pressure. When they reached the top of the stairs and took a couple more steps, they arrived at an iron door.
As Zheng Qian opened the door, Lin Nan couldn’t wait to rush inside and check it out.
This was going to be her home for several weeks this semester!

The living room was barely ten square meters, crammed with a small sofa and a TV cabinet, which made it feel even more crowded. Walking further in, the bedroom felt slightly bigger, but it was just a bed and a desk, with a transparent glass partition making up the bathroom.
Although the one-bedroom wasn’t furnished with much, it was packed as if it had no space to breathe.
But it may be small, but it had all the essentials: hot water, air conditioning, and internet. The bathroom even had a small washbasin for laundry, and there was a clothesline outside the window.
“What do you think?” Zheng Qian said, standing at the door, watching Lin Nan excitedly inspect everything.
“It’s great! Really great!” Lin Nan grinned from ear to ear.
She sat comfortably on the bed, which was a soft spring mattress.
“If you’re living here for the next two months, it shouldn’t be a problem. Just remember to inform the landlord when you move in, and settle the water and electricity bills when you leave,” Zheng Qian warned, concerned about Lin Nan’s lack of living experience, and he started to ramble on. “Be careful with the electrical appliances, buy some medicine, and if you suddenly feel unwell, remember to call me…”
Lin Nan didn’t bother to listen, casually pacing around the place, curiously inspecting her new abode, stopping in front of the TV cabinet.
There was no wardrobe in the room, so she figured she could use the drawer in the TV cabinet for her clothes.
While thinking so, she casually opened the drawer.
However, inside the drawer lay a strange blue stick.
“Zheng Qian, did your friend leave this behind?” She had never seen anything like it; it looked a bit like a curling iron she had seen in short videos.
“What?”
Zheng Qian stepped forward.
“This!” Lin Nan held up the stick and handed it to Zheng Qian. “Maybe your friend forgot to take it with her?”

Zheng Qian stared at the item, feeling completely dumbfounded.
He looked up at the clueless Lin Nan, trying hard to maintain his composure as he accepted the stick and awkwardly said, “I’ll send it back to her when I have the chance.”
“Ah, I’ll check and see if she has anything else she forgot!”
“No need! I’ll go find it later.” Zheng Qian forced a smile, hiding the stick behind his back.

Fortunately, Lin Nan seemed really oblivious to what it was.
But she was curious: “What is that stick?”
Zheng Qian’s smile became even more rigid. He immediately pulled the keys out of his pocket and handed them to Lin Nan, strategically avoiding the question. “The small one’s for the room, the big one’s for the iron gate downstairs.”
“So you’re just giving this to me?!” Lin Nan immediately forgot about the earlier incident.
“Later, send me a picture of your ID and your phone number; I’ll give it to the landlord.” Zheng Qian sighed in relief, thankful that this naïve girl didn’t think too much. So innocent and easy to fool, “You’ll stay in the dorm tonight, and you can move in tomorrow.”
During this time, he needed to check if there was anything scandalous left in the house.
Lin Nan was beyond thrilled, taking the keys, and her already flushed face grew even redder with excitement.
Although leaving the dorm and her roommates was a bit sad, at least she wouldn’t have to be shy about her sleeping arrangements anymore.
With the keys in her hand, she immediately acted like the owner of the place, unceremoniously tossing her jacket onto the sofa and contemplating what daily necessities she needed to buy and how to set up her cozy little nest.
