326. Is this what they call a bestie? 【4/99】

Lin Nan was a bit dazed when Lilith strutted in between her and Chen Yao, head held high and looking all haughty.
Who knows what’s going on in that head of hers? The first thing out of her mouth was, “Loser!”
Chen Yao had no clue why he was being roasted—hey, it’s not like he was doing anything wrong for his own girlfriend!
Over the past week, he’d had a few run-ins with Lilith, and none of them were particularly pleasant, so he’d done a bit of snooping on her through his social contacts.
The tall, flat-chested one here was named Lilith, a new freshman this semester.
Rumor had it that her personality stinks; she has this princess complex and looks down on everyone, only behaving somewhat when Lina is around. But she’s been caught multiple times trying to throw bricks at Lina!
So far, she wasn’t popular in the girls’ dorm—after just a week, three dorms banded together to protest her.
She’s quite a looker, though. Last semester, she worked at the Maid Café and was like a goddess to the boys with her icy demeanor in a maid outfit.
Chen Yao glanced at the fuming Lin Nan and then over at Lilith, who was cradling a black cat.
The two girls looked similar enough that they might be relatives, albeit possibly estranged due to some childhood conflict. Nowadays, whenever they met, it was as if they were sworn enemies, both denying the connection.
It seemed likely that Lina also knew Lin Nan from childhood; otherwise, why would she threaten her with secrets and make such nasty jokes?
The way they were fighting over the cola made it seem like Lilith had a history of snatching Lin Nan’s toys.
Connecting the dots, Chen Yao quickly imagined the tangled drama of familial sibling rivalry.
Since it was family drama, he figured it was better to stay out of it, much like the last time when Lilith tripped Lin Nan, but Lin Nan ended up defending her.
“Give me back my cola!” Lin Nan thought sulking on the ground was too weak, struggling to stand up, legs trembling a bit, but still glaring angrily at Lilith. “Where’s Lina? Why did you run out here by yourself?”
“I wiped the floor with her!” Lilith bragged, “While she was sleeping, I just slammed a brick on her!”
“Pfft~” Lin Nan rolled her eyes in disdain.
Lilith wasn’t bothered; she held the cola victoriously, petting its head and boasting, “Cola has been living the high life at my place! Gained a few pounds! Look at how you’ve been raising it! It’s practically skin and bones! And you still dare ask for it back?”
“That’s rich coming from you! If you were decent, how could it possibly go hungry?” Lin Nan shot her a glare. “Who was it that refused to eat and roamed around looking for me for days? Of course, it lost weight!”
Watching Cola bask in the affection made Lin Nan’s heart ache. She had raised this cat since it was a kitten, and now it was curled up in the witch’s embrace.
Witch and black cat—it seems oddly fitting, doesn’t it?
Once Lilith remembered her own traumatic experience with sterilization, her shoulders began to shake with rage. With a sinister smile, she stepped closer, menacingly threatening, “I’m going to swipe away your Chen Yao and everything you have! And I’ll make sure you’re sterilized too!”
With a huff, she suddenly recalled something and hurriedly turned to leave, her steps quickening.
Lina must be waking up; I gotta get back! If she doesn’t see me, I’ll get my head knocked!
Once I regain my magic…
Lin Nan’s eyes sparkled as she seized the moment, throwing a hand out in front of Lilith.
“Slap!”
Chen Yao was dumbfounded as Lilith executed a dramatic face-plant right onto the grass, sending the cat flying out of her arms!
What’s up with this girl? Is she okay in the head?
He’d only seen Lilith a few times, and now she’d managed to faceplant twice on flat ground—no obstacles at all!
Even her fall looked identical; too bad she wasn’t wearing a skirt.
Seeing her fall, the fuming Lin Nan’s face transformed into a smug grin. Posing with hands on her hips, she squatted next to the face-down Lilith flattened in the grass, “Hey! Got magic, huh? Familiar with ‘Void Hand’?”
Just then, Lilith suddenly flipped over and lunged at Lin Nan, but Lin Nan was quick on her feet, jumping back, causing Lilith to go crashing to the ground again!
“I’ve got speed-up magic too! Lina tried to stab me, but I counterattacked her instead! You’ll never catch me in your life!” Lin Nan declared triumphantly, feeling fantastic.
“b*tch! Little tramp!” Lilith spat from the ground, then paused to weep a little like a lost puppy, “I’m gonna toss you to some tentacle monster for three whole days and nights! Boo~ and then I’ll get you sterilized! Ugh!”
She sniffled and buried her face back in the grass, spewing a colorful array of curses.
Lin Nan stared at the now-crying and cursing Lilith and felt a twinge of guilt.
So, she gently patted Lilith’s head and soothingly offered, “It’s okay, it’s okay, I won’t bully you anymore.”
“But it seems like you were the one planning to bully me first…”
Lin Nan sighed deeply. She’d always been shy and bullied back in middle school, and now that she was bullying someone else, she felt a bit bad about it—even if that someone wanted to toss her to monsters…
Chen Yao watched their interaction and suddenly realized—so this is what they call girls’ playful banter?
Lilith was quick to shift gears; after spewing curses for a good ten minutes, her sobbing suddenly stopped as she lifted her tear-streaked face and slowly got back on her feet. She waved at Cola, who dashed into her arms.
Cola leaped right into Lilith’s embrace, and her face lit up with a smile as she triumphantly challenged Lin Nan, “Look at it! One wave from me, and it comes running! Can you do that?”
“???”
Lin Nan was baffled. Is she for real?
“I’m out! Don’t feel like messing around anymore.” Lin Nan stood up, “She’s definitely got issues.”
She returned to Chen Yao’s side and looked up at his strange expression. “Let’s go, let’s go, don’t play with this weirdo.”
“You two seem pretty close!” Chen Yao scratched his head, smiling as he asked, “How come you always act like you’re at odds with each other?”
“Close? Where?” Lin Nan turned to leave, mumbling, “We’re not on speaking terms, okay?”
Chen Yao followed Lin Nan’s steps, pondering the question for a bit before suddenly associating Lilith with Tu Junhui’s antics: “You know, it’s kind of like how you and Tu Junhui argue all the time? Just bickering, but you’re still close.”
“Who’s close with her?”
Chen Yao quickly laughed nervously, “Right, right! Not on speaking terms!”
Is this what they mean by female friendship?
