Li Na lowered her head and continued reading. She was a true speed reader, flipping through a page in seconds and able to recite it fluently afterward.
To outsiders, it seemed like she was just flipping through a book for fun.
While reading, she continued, “Magic used to be superficial. When you get hurt, you can quickly stop the bleeding, regenerate flesh over exposed bones, and condense fireballs to destroy everything. It looks impressive, but we actually didn’t know the principles behind it.”
“If this world operates under the same laws as ours, then explaining the workings of magic using scientific methods might help develop new spells.”
“So, I plan to learn and observe more while I’m here.”
Li Na closed the book, which was titled From Medical Basics to the Grave.
“That sounds impressive, but it’s practically useless,” Lilith quipped. “There’s no magic here at all; the worldview is completely different.”
Li Na lifted the hefty medical book and, while chatting and laughing with Lin Nan, brought it crashing down on Lilith’s head like a brick.
The thick tome knocked Lilith out cold, face down on the table, blissfully unaware of her surroundings.
“Don’t listen to her nonsense! I really am researching magic!” Li Na straightened her back defiantly. “I have the grand ambitions of a Saintess! There’s a fundamental difference between me and her, a witch who just eats and waits to d*e!”
Lin Nan felt increasingly uneasy; everything she heard made her doubt the reliability of the magic this girl was teaching her.
She timidly asked, “Can’t you give me a legit healing spell?”
“It’s too high-level for you to use.”
But strengthening the immune system sounds pretty high-level too, right?
Li Na immediately saw through Lin Nan’s thoughts and cheerfully explained, “It’s really just about stimulating the immune system to make it stronger.”
“But I guarantee there’s no life-threatening danger! It’s really just a fever for a bit, and it’ll be fine! Cancer can even be cured!” With total confidence, she added, “But it’s best if you use it with a resurrection spell. After a couple of rounds, cancer is just a piece of cake!”
Lin Nan’s expression darkened. She realized this girl was just messing with her.
Sure enough, none of the folks from another world are reliable!
If it weren’t for the teacher calling out names, Lin Nan would have already stormed off in frustration.
“How about this! I’ll do some more research and bring you an improved version tomorrow! You just need to model as a clothing hanger for one afternoon!” Li Na chirped cheerfully. “I promise to fix this flaw.”
“That’s more like it…”
Lin Nan muttered as she turned to Li Na, only to see her had somehow hidden the medical book and pulled out another one about fashion design.
She genuinely wanted to bring back Earth’s beautiful clothes for promotion and was still pondering what kind of outfits are eye-catching yet appealing, something that could quickly catch on with the masses.
“How about this afternoon? You have no classes, right?” Li Na asked while flipping through the book.
“Just don’t make me go outside…” Lin Nan sighed, suspecting this girl was just toying with her for amusement.
The corners of Li Na’s mouth twitched up as she nodded, “Okay then.”
Who knows what this girl is really thinking?
Lin Nan knew that, due to her status as a Saintess, Li Na was not allowed to wear anything too revealing. But this is Earth! No one would know if she wore it privately—why did she have to be the one to try it on?
The morning classes ended quickly amidst their chit-chat. Lin Nan couldn’t quite grasp Li Na’s reasoning, but she needed to get Chen Yao’s illness fixed soon; otherwise, who knows what might happen if it continued like this!
When they returned to the rental apartment, Chen Yao was still sound asleep.
Lin Nan didn’t want to wake him up and had no appetite for food. Sitting on the couch, she hesitated about whether to go to Li Na’s place and undergo the shame of trying on women’s clothing.
Just the other day, she’d barely glanced through and saw backless tops, deep V-necks, sailor outfits…
It’d be fine if she wore them privately, but with Li Na there, Lilith would surely be pointing and giggling.
Imagining that scene made Lin Nan cringe, especially since Li Na was a yuri enthusiast.
She took a sip of water, set the glass down, and sighed heavily.
“Lin Nan.”
A call from the bedroom suddenly jolted her awake from her thoughts. Lin Nan froze for a moment and hurriedly got up, saying, “What’s up? Hungry?”
She opened the door to see Chen Yao sitting at the edge of the bed, concerned. “How are you? Did your nap help?”
“I feel a bit better.” Chen Yao still looked sleepy; he glanced at Lin Nan and hesitated for a moment before saying, “Your mom just called me.”
“What did she want?” Lin Nan perched on the edge of the bed, curious. “She isn’t planning on remarrying, is she? Shouldn’t she be calling me?”
Chen Yao looked down, his expression gloomy. “Your grandfather is sick and in the hospital. He couldn’t get through to you, so he called me.”
“What happened?!” Lin Nan exclaimed, shocked. She pulled out her phone and, sure enough, found a missed call from her mother.
“Appendicitis.”
“Geez, stop scaring me when I’m burning up!” Lin Nan felt the tension lift immediately and shot him a glare, half-laughing, half-scolding. “I thought it was something serious. A few years back, my grandmother also had appendicitis; she went in for a few days and came right out.”
“I heard for appendicitis, just surgery will do the trick, right?” Lin Nan didn’t know much about the condition.
Chen Yao recalled what he heard during the earlier call. “The thing is, your grandfather’s appendicitis is pretty serious. He’s in the hospital now; the doctor suggested surgery, but he’s not in good shape and doesn’t want to go under the kn*fe, so they’re treating him conservatively with medication.”
