381. The Pure Innocent Girl Lilith
Lin Nan woke up a bit late today.
After a late-night movie and a delicious dinner, she returned to her rental apartment well past eleven. After washing up and playing with her phone, she didn’t finally fall asleep until one in the morning.
Her sleep quality was never great, waking up multiple times for no reason in the middle of the night, and groggily dragging herself back to sleep, making getting up in the morning for class feel like an extreme sport.
Wearing her nightgown, with disheveled hair and legs crossed on the bed, she sat there with a face full of despair, staring blankly at Chen Yao, who was brushing his teeth in the bathroom, as if trying to comprehend the meaning of life.
“Get up already! If you keep dragging your feet, you’ll be late for class!” Chen Yao spat out the toothpaste foam, turned around, and noticed Lin Nan looking utterly lifeless. “What’s with the energy of a floppy fish?”
Lin Nan mumbled, “You always wake me up early…”
“That’s because the school’s schedule is unreasonable! We have class every morning! I heard some classes don’t have any until the afternoon! Lucky dogs get to sleep until noon!”
“Ugh, so jealous…” Lin Nan rubbed her eyes with both hands, then yawned and stretched like a lazy cat.
Her eyes finally showed a hint of life, but her body still felt like a sack of potatoes, so exhausted that even lifting her arm required monumental effort.
Then, with a dramatic flop, she threw herself back on the bed, burying her face in the blanket like a toddler throwing a tantrum. “I’m skipping class today! Skipping! I need my beauty sleep!”
“Come on, roll over,” Chen Yao said, standing at her bedside.
Lin Nan reluctantly rolled over to face him, but suddenly a towel fell onto her face and began rubbing vigorously against her delicate skin. “What the heck! That hurts!”
She quickly dodged Chen Yao’s hand, rolling away and curling up on the far side of the bed, looking at him with exaggerated wariness. “You’re going to pay for any bl**d drawn!”
“I didn’t even use that much force, did I?” Chen Yao shrugged, confused by her dramatic reaction, but quite satisfied when he saw her peppy inquiry, “Feeling awake now? Get up, brush your teeth, wash your face, and get dressed. I’ll go downstairs and grab you breakfast.”
“Ugh!”
Although she did feel more awake, Lin Nan laid back down with a huff, determined to linger in bed.
But Chen Yao turned and exited the bedroom, and just a few minutes later, he left the apartment.
With no luck falling back asleep, Lin Nan tossed and turned in bed, grumbling until she finally kicked the covers off and got up with a pout.
After washing up and changing her clothes, Chen Yao came back with breakfast. After munching down, it was time to head out.
However, as they reached downstairs, Lin Nan caught sight of Lilith’s silhouette disappearing around the corner of the alley.
She paused in shock, then quickly picked up her pace, trying to catch up, but when she turned the corner, Lilith had vanished without a trace.
“What’s up?” Chen Yao, oblivious to the situation and having little contact with Lilith, didn’t even notice who just passed by.
Furrowing her brows, Lin Nan suspected she might have mistaken her or just imagined it, so she shook her head and kept quiet.
After all, Lilith lived nowhere near this alley, so how could she possibly be here so early in the morning?
Had she spent the night hiding out on her doorstep?
That thought made Lin Nan’s heart race, and a sudden wave of guilt washed over her.
Even though Lilith had been on Earth for a while, she had originally been Lin Nan’s pet cat, and then later taken care of by Li Na. Now, on her own and with no money for food… she might have gone an entire day without eating.
The even bigger issue was that her beloved cola would be hungry too.
Poor things.
Chen Yao noticed Lin Nan’s anxious expression and frowned. “What’s the matter? Is it about the campus flower rankings?”
“No.”
“Then it’s about Lilith, right?” Chen Yao deduced, noticing something was different between the two girls. “Didn’t she say she couldn’t afford food yesterday?”
“Yeah…”
“She’s grown up now. Even if her parents aren’t giving her money, she can always find a temporary job or borrow from friends, right? Why are you worried about her?”
Sure, it sounded logical, but who knows what goes on in that head of Lilith?
Plus, it seemed like Lilith didn’t get along well with the other students in her class.
With a sigh, Lin Nan realized she couldn’t articulate her concerns to Chen Yao, but she did her best to lift her spirits and not let her mood affect him.
This semester, Lin Nan had pretty much skimmed through her classes, using magic to memorize the entire textbook, so she often felt a bit bored in class.
During the class, Chen Yao rallied a group of male classmates to report Lin Nan’s photo for violating school rules on the campus flower voting site. Given it was a clean-up period, the school received a wave of complaints and swiftly deleted her photo.
Lin Nan, still consumed with worry about Lilith, completely missed Chen Yao’s actions. She took advantage of class dismissal to sneak out of the classroom and headed straight to find Lilith in her classroom.
She had already confirmed via text with Liu Xuefei that Lilith was in class today.
With only a few minutes left before the bell rang, Lin Nan peered into the classroom through the windows and quickly spotted Lilith sitting alone in the back.
Today, Lilith looked a bit disheveled, her clothes dirty and her hair not styled at all, still in the outfit she’d worn yesterday.
Lin Nan felt her heart twist.
After anxiously waiting for a moment at the door, the bell rang for a break, and Lin Nan marched right in, heading straight for Lilith.
“What’s up?” Lilith leaned on her hand, looking lazy while her cola was curled up asleep on her lap.
Lin Nan plopped down beside her, serious as ever. “Don’t run off after class. Wait for me.”
“Hmm?”
“If Li Na’s not around, I can take care of you for a while before she gets back.” Lin Nan felt like that sounded a bit too much like she was groveling.
Sure enough, upon hearing this, Lilith lifted her head with a proud huff, “Not needed! I’ve already got my own place to eat!”
“Wait, what? Did you con that pure boy?” Lin Nan gasped.
“Con? No, it’s a tribute!” Lilith proudly put her hands on her hips. “I don’t need Li Na or you anymore!”
Lin Nan was shocked. “If Li Na finds out, she’ll k*ll him!”
Li Na had always thought of Lilith as this innocent, pure girl, right? If she found out Lilith spent a night alone with some guy…
“Pfft, that yuri freak wouldn’t have even given me magic…” Lilith seemed unconcerned about Wang Rui’s life, “But it’s not like I’m the one dying, just duped, hmm.”
“And besides, it’s not like we’re anything special.”
