But the dreaded counselor Zheng Qian used his favorite threat, “If you don’t come, I’ll deduct your credits!” to drag them here, just to avoid the humiliation of an empty room during the talk.
Honestly, Lin Nan was tired of excuses like these. Usually, she’d ignore Zheng Qian’s threats, but this time he seemed excessively serious, really laying it on thick.
She glanced at the job postings by the door. To be honest, the pay for interns was quite tempting—five to six thousand for design positions.
But hey, with the pandemic just easing up, the fact that this company can’t even hire anyone speaks volumes.
Just as she was about to sit next to Tu Junhui, she felt a hand tug her back. She turned to see Lilith sitting next to her.
“What’s up?” Lin Nan shot a look at the cola cat in her arms, which was oddly plump, then glanced over to find that Li Na wasn’t next to Lilith; it was that grad student who lived next door.
Lin Nan always suspected this grad student was involved with Lilith. But wait, what was his name again?
“Just wanted to discuss something,” Lilith smiled, pulling Lin Nan closer, a rare display of friendliness.
Usually, when Lilith met Lin Nan, she sported a high-and-mighty face, so this cheerful demeanor felt a bit off.
She’s not planning to trick me into working for free again, is she?
Lin Nan’s alarm bells went off.
Two days ago, Li Na came to hassle her, and now Lilith was at it too?
“Where’s Li Na?” Lin Nan decided to take the lead.
“She’s busy directing the renovations,” Lilith grinned, eyes sparkling like a cat that just saw a laser pointer.
Lin Nan raised an eyebrow, suspiciously glancing past Lilith to check the grad student on the other side.
After a moment of silence, she blurted, “You two aren’t… dating, are you?”
“Nope,” Wang Rui replied deadpan.
“Exactly!” Lilith’s smile brightened even more.
Lin Nan was baffled. Looking between Lilith and Wang Rui, it didn’t seem like they were close. Wang Rui looked rather stiff sitting next to Lilith.
Is Lilith chasing Wang Rui?
That shouldn’t be the case; she’s a witch!
Or could Lilith be planning something sneaky with him?
Various wild theories zipped through Lin Nan’s mind, but she remained stoic and nodded, “Aren’t you afraid Li Na will k*ll you?”
“No prob, she can at most just k*ll him,” Lilith shrugged, unbothered.
Seeing Lilith’s nonchalant expression only confirmed Lin Nan’s suspicions that Lilith was definitely up to no good with Wang Rui.
Lin Nan quickly put on a stern face and warned Lilith, “Don’t stir up trouble; Li Na has a short temper.”
Plus, that girl has some serious possessiveness issues.
“I know! That’s why I need your help,” Lilith pushed her cat onto Wang Rui’s lap, then leaned closer to Lin Nan, her smile taking on a hint of flattery.
Wang Rui looked dark and gloomy, glancing down at the obese cola cat, realizing just a few seconds in that his leg was losing feeling under the weight.
Lilith whispered into Lin Nan’s ear, “I hope you can help me keep a secret.”
“Huh?” Lin Nan was confused. “What secret?”
“When I go on dates with him, I need you to provide cover; you know, be my wingman or something.”
“You can’t be serious…” Lin Nan stared at her in shock.
Lilith’s eyes narrowed, and she nodded seriously, “I’ve thought it through.”
What bizarre thoughts have popped into your head?
“I have no magic now and can’t get back to my world. Besides, what’s the point? I want to live like a human here for a bit, but Li Na’s got me stuck.”
“If Wang Rui helps me escape, if we get caught, I’ll blame him! If we don’t get caught, I get to live my life!”
After Lilith’s explanation, Lin Nan was even more bewildered, “Wait, you’re not going back? Not being a witch anymore?”
“I’ve already lived for three hundred years over there! Why not enjoy a few decades in this new world before heading back? I can always apologize to Li Na later.” Lilith beamed with pride over her grand plan. “She can wait.”
Well, Li Na has already been waiting for almost three hundred years for Lilith to return, so it makes sense.
But from an earthly perspective, Lin Nan found it hard to wrap her head around that number.
Three hundred years ago, the Earth was in the 18th century, and the East was still in the Qing Dynasty. The founding of America is barely two hundred years old, and in Chinese history, there are only a few dynasties that lasted over three hundred years. Each one was shorter than Lilith’s age.
For Lin Nan, thinking in terms of decades or centuries was just mind-boggling.
It seemed that both Lilith and Li Na were settling in for the long haul on Earth.
Initially, Lin Nan thought these two otherworldly beings would only be here for a few months or a year, then head back after sorting things out. But now, it seemed like they planned to stick around for a long time.
After thinking for a moment, Lin Nan reluctantly agreed to Lilith’s scheme, though doubts lingered: “But if you don’t go back, won’t more people come from your world?”
What if it turned into a war between the other world and Earth, with magic clashing with technology?
That plotline was common in novels; entertaining to read, but the reality? No thanks!
“Don’t worry! That won’t happen,” Lilith smiled and shook her head. “They’re too busy dealing with their own mess to care about this place.”
“Just help me cover up! I’ll find a way to win Wang Rui over and then we’ll take off!” Lilith sat up straight, “And we’ll just say Wang Rui seduced me! I was blinded, and Li Na won’t be able to do anything.”
Lin Nan felt like Lilith might just genuinely like Wang Rui, but her reasoning didn’t seem entirely off either.
“Alright, I’ll try to help,” she said hesitantly.
On the other side, Wang Rui curiously observed the two girls whispering to each other, feeling a sudden chill run down his spine, making him sweat.
He scratched his head, shrugging it off and looked up at the speakers on stage, pondering how he might find a chill job during his grad school prep.
