Chapter 481: The Great Barrier
Euphilia followed Beilin to the Security Team.
The Security Team was an organization under the Student Council, managed by mentors specifically assigned by the academy.
At the heart of the academy’s Great Barrier sat the Security Team’s core, a place strictly guarded.
The Great Barrier was crucial for the safety of the entire academy, and no outsiders were allowed in any associated areas. So, to find out what was going on, Euphilia had to come in person.
And while she was at it, she could also directly inquire about the investigation with the Security Team — not too much trouble, really.
Her arrival was met with a warm welcome.
Some of the Security Team members had taken her classes, and quite a few from the barrier maintenance group were also mentors at the Magic Academy.
After exchanging a few casual greetings, Euphilia dived into understanding the situation of the Great Barrier.
This barrier had been in place since the academy was founded, undergoing several major renovations and expansions over the years, and it was now quite functional.
The last major overhaul was made a hundred years ago.
With the stability of the barrier verified over such a long time, there was clearly no issue.
Any minor bugs that cropped up were continuously addressed by the large group of mentors here, whose main job was just that.
They worked in shifts, sometimes maintaining the barrier, and other times heading back to their research or classes.
Only Beilin was a special case, acting as the supervisor and occasionally returning to the Magic Academy.
Looking at the arrangements, a term gradually floated to Euphilia’s mind — programmer.
It was eerily similar!
Oh, with one slight difference: this was a magical world, so these folks had a bit more hair to flaunt.
Aside from that, even the conversations she overheard when entering were just like programmers arguing over code.
“Dude! You can’t do that! If you add this line, it’ll throw errors over here, you dare change it and I’ll take you down!”
“cr*p! Who did this?! There are no comments, how am I supposed to understand this?!”
“Not sure how it works, but after this tweak, it actually functions! Amazing!”
Not clear on the principles, but functioning well.
Beilin felt a bit awkward and cleared her throat loudly.
“Cough cough!! Euphilia Academy Head is here for an inspection, everyone, welcome!”
Upon hearing this, everyone looked up or turned their heads, and the place instantly grew silent.
The next moment, a round of applause erupted.
Euphilia smiled and waved her hand down, “I’m just here to check things out; you all continue with your work.”
Everyone quickly reverted to their previous activities.
But there was a slight change in their interactions.
“Big Brother, how do we modify it? Let’s discuss.”
“Oh, just connect the front and back structures; it’s actually quite understandable. The logic is clear.”
“What an interesting discovery; I think I’ve found a shortcut!”
Euphilia just smiled.
No need to make life difficult for those hard at work.
She sought out key personnel regarding important parts and got a general overview of the Great Barrier’s operation.
She could already see some issues from her previous observations outside; now, viewing it from the inside made things clearer.
Euphilia had a bit of research on barriers herself.
Finally, she reached a conclusion.
“I think your barrier isn’t barrier-ish enough.”
Others were initially stunned and then shocked.
Holy moly! The classic phrase has appeared!
But come on, this is the Great Barrier; could there really be any groundbreaking thoughts on this?
Believe it or not, there truly was!
Currently, the academy’s Great Barrier fundamentally had two main functions.
One was defense, and the other was sensing.
Defense needn’t be elaborated on; it was very strong against external threats. Just look at the massive explosion caused by Yuliya at the Rensyi Kingdom battlefield — it could take a few hits without breaking a sweat.
The person who set up this barrier when the academy was founded was definitely not your average joe.
But after taking some hits, it would undoubtedly suffer damage, and repairs would be a huge hassle.
Though normally, not many would go around testing it like that.
As for the internal sensing, that was rather simplistic.
As mentioned before, it sensed magical fluctuations above different levels in various regions and then triggered alarms.
For example, the dormitory area only allowed basic daily-level magic, while the teaching area allowed elementary, and the outdoor training ground permitted advanced.
Any exceedance would trigger an alarm.
And those alarms? Well, they were all just loud.
This was one of the problems they faced; they only knew the dormitory alarm went off but had no clue as to why or what the precise range was.
From Euphilia’s perspective, this barrier was like a turtle shell — tough on the outside, but completely inadequate on the inside.
Some might say, “Hey, if it can still sound alarms, isn’t that enough?”
To which Euphilia would say, “Clearly you haven’t seen the real deal.”
Because Euphilia had seen the strongest barrier — the Golden District, or as she affectionately called it, Sister Tong!
That place could withstand divine beings, penetrate every secret within, and even had an AI mode that was just shy of saying, “Happy to serve you, master.”
Euphilia casually listed off a few functions she believed a barrier should possess, such as information logging and remote communication, leaving the others dumbfounded.
Wait, barriers can do that?!
So yeah, this barrier needed a little sprucing up, that much was clear.
But Euphilia took a detailed look at the architecture of the academy’s Great Barrier.
Looking at the countless patches, one could say it was a mess.
But come to think of it, a few years of codes could turn into a nightmare on Blue Planet; this Great Barrier had over a thousand years of history!
It had been modified again and again since the academy’s establishment.
Attempting a major overhaul would surely invite strange issues cropping up at the most bizarre locations.
And let’s not forget, the parts Yuliya wanted to modify involved more than half of the barrier itself.
Euphilia sighed; she understood the grumpy banter of the maintenance staff she overheard when she first arrived.
Each one was a hot-headed big brother, and that was completely normal.
With such a thing to alter, it would be easier to just create a new directory and whip up a 2.0 version.
“Let’s just redesign it completely.”
Upon hearing this, everyone’s jaws dropped.
“This….”
“Headmistress, are you serious?”
“Wouldn’t that be a bit much…”
It was as if someone was about to shout about not changing the ancestral methods!
But Euphilia had something to say too; you all want me to resolve problems, but trying to fix things on the current basis would be more of a hassle than demolishing and starting anew.
“I’ll consult Mitina about this later; just don’t worry about it.”
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
If the academy head made the call, it would be fine since the whole academy belonged to her.
But this sort of thing wouldn’t be resolved overnight; even if it was decided to tear it down and rebuild, preparations would take a long time, and it would have to be implemented during student breaks.
So, the problems at hand still needed targeted solutions.
“Let’s go, we need to check in with the Security Team about the situation.”
