**Chapter 239: Look, There’s a Wounded Nine-Tailed Fox Here!**
In the next second, the Lion Monster Beast charged straight at the Wolf Monster Beast. But even as it pounced and began tearing at the Wolf Monster Beast’s back, the latter completely ignored the onslaught until, well, it was chewed to bits.
“That’s a bit strange!”
Bai Feng rubbed his chin. It seemed these monster beasts were not suffering from any special disease but rather were being manipulated by someone. I mean, the Wolf Monster Beast shouldn’t just sit there and take it!
However, the mastermind behind all this clearly didn’t realize there was a bug in their plan. Or maybe they just didn’t think someone could easily control these beasts with illusion arts. Thus, we had the Wolf Monster Beast dying without ever putting up a fight.
He glanced down at Yun Yue Yao, who shook her head. Clearly, she hadn’t encountered this situation in her foresight.
“Let’s go deeper and investigate,” Bai Feng decided. He was eager to observe a few more monsters, preferably ones engaged in combat.
Using the Yin Yang Pattern, he gauged the direction of spirit energy fluctuations emanating from a nearby battle. Soon enough, he had his target.
Minutes later, Bai Feng arrived at the edge of a grove, spotting a white figure darting through the trees — it was a snow-white fox.
“A Nine-Tailed Fox?”
He noted that this fox boasted quite the stash of tails, clearly not your run-of-the-mill spirit fox.
What a treasure trove of wonders in this immortal’s secret realm — even a Nine-Tailed Fox! And it seemed to be of rather pure bl**d, miles apart from those half-baked fox demons wandering around in the Southern Region.
However, this Nine-Tailed Fox didn’t exhibit the noble grace of legends; instead, it appeared a bit worse for wear, sporting a wounded hind leg with its snowy fur stained crimson.
‘Hmm, good, not a Child of Destiny,’ Bai Feng glanced at the system and nodded internally, contemplating the delightful prospect of grabbing the fox for some petting.
At that moment, Yun Yue Yao stepped forward, positioning herself in front of him. “Be careful; it’s acting a bit off.”
“Yeah… and something’s chasing it,” Bai Feng nodded. He also sensed something was off with this fox; its eyes were filled with fury — very much like the aggressive monster beasts — though it still seemed to retain some level of sanity.
As soon as the Nine-Tailed Fox spotted Bai Feng and company, a glimmer of wariness showed in its eyes. It promptly turned to run in another direction.
But suddenly, a mouse burst forth from the leaf-covered ground. With bl**d-red eyes, it lunged straight at the Nine-Tailed Fox’s hind leg!
The Nine-Tailed Fox dodged the mouse’s attack in a panic and changed direction again.
“ROAR!!”
A furious roar echoed nearby as two more monster beasts came charging in, heading straight for the Nine-Tailed Fox.
“Three of them?!” Bai Feng exclaimed, surprised. Was the fox in this predicament due to attracting more monsters while fleeing or was it targeted by the puppet master on purpose?
Best to save it first and ask questions later!
Quickly getting an idea, he figured a Nine-Tailed Fox was a good omen among monster tribes and held a significant status — unlike regular beasts, it might know something about the secret realm.
So, he sent the Lion Monster Beast over.
The Nine-Tailed Fox, desperately seeking a way out, spotted the charging Lion Monster Beast and instantly despaired.
Looks like this was the end of the line for it.
But —
Even if it was going down, it would take these pests with it!
The rage in its eyes intensified as it unleashed a torrent of monster energy, its tails fanning out like a peacock’s plumage.
Just as it was about to attack the Lion Monster Beast, it was baffled to find the beast completely ignoring its presence, barreling straight for the pursuing monster beasts behind it.
“?”
What does that mean? Is this Lion Monster Beast nearsighted? Or are they also going to bicker amongst themselves?
The Nine-Tailed Fox’s confusion grew as it watched the Lion Monster beat the tar out of the three monsters that were after it.
Those three monster beasts acted like they were blind to the Lion Monster, allowing it to maul them without a fight.
Before long, the mouse was gobbled up, and the other two, battered and bruised, collapsed on the ground.
“Are you okay?” Bai Feng approached cautiously, while Yun Yue Yao and Bai Yu Mo had already drawn their swords, eyes closely watching the wounded Nine-Tailed Fox.
The fox didn’t respond. It first glanced at the now-still Lion Monster, then back at Bai Feng. Its brow creased slightly as it spoke, a chilling yet alluring voice emerging, “Did you do this to them? What’s your purpose?”
“Not me! I just exploited a loophole.” Bai Feng shook his head. “I noticed that these irrational monsters wouldn’t attack one another. So, I used illusion arts to control one.”
“Huh? How is that possible? They’re all consumed by bloodlust!”
The Nine-Tailed Fox was skeptical. Being a natural seductress, she had tried to charm them before, but it clearly didn’t work.
“It’s all about weaving the right illusion for them,” Bai Feng tossed out casually. But he wasn’t keen on getting into a deep discussion on illusion arts with a fox. Instead, he asked about something that piqued his interest more, “By the way, do you know what’s going on with these monster beasts?”
“Nope.”
The Nine-Tailed Fox shook its head, its eyes turning darker as chaotic thoughts began to swirl within.
‘This guy looks up to no good and is full of lies. He might be the mastermind; I need to take him out!’
‘It’s all because of these outsiders. If it weren’t for them, why would such bizarre things be happening in the secret realm?’
‘Gotta k*ll him, must k*ll him!’
Showing off its sharp teeth, it felt on the verge of losing control when a sudden melodious clang from a sword snapped it back to reality.
The Nine-Tailed Fox instinctively turned to Yun Yue Yao, who was preparing to strike. The bl**d-soaked haze in its eyes cleared slightly. “The aura of the Tian Yan Sword? You’re a descendant of Fairy Tian Yan?”
Yun Yue Yao halted, staring at the Nine-Tailed Fox, her face a picture of confusion as a hint of murderous intent flickered in her eyes. “Tian Yan Sword? What’s that?”
“Don’t panic! I’ve been waiting for this day for ages. My ancestor was a servant of Fairy Tian Yan, and my mission is to await her or her descendants’ return. That’s why I can sense the presence of the Tian Yan Sword.” The Nine-Tailed Fox quickly shook its head. “And even if you’re not her descendant, it’s fine; holding the Tian Yan Sword means you’ve been acknowledged by it.”
Taking stock of her own condition, the fox sighed with a hint of bitterness, “But it seems I can’t serve you now.”
Then, it surrendered, exposing its neck. “Please, Master, give me a quick d*ath. I don’t want to end up like them.”
Suddenly, a voice cut in, “Could you explain your current situation?”
The Nine-Tailed Fox turned to Bai Feng, its eyes no longer wary or defensive, but rather polite as it addressed him: “There’s a wave of demon energy within me gnawing at my body and consciousness, but I currently don’t know how to stop its invasion.”
