Chapter 38: Even the Five-Star Reviewer Yan Lin Was Impressed… or Not
“Brother Lin?”
Bai Feng pushed open the door and was greeted by Lin Yan standing right outside his room. Just thinking about the system’s recent notifications made him want to slam the door shut faster than a judge’s gavel.
So, you kid targeted the Child of Destiny’s little brother, huh?
Despite feeling a bit miffed, Bai Feng kept his poker face and asked casually, “Brother Lin, have you unearthed anything yet?”
Lin Yan, upon hearing this, immediately looked guilty and waved his hands hurriedly. “Apologies! My investigation into the rumor seems to have been noticed by the other side. I haven’t found anything concrete.”
Bai Feng raised an eyebrow. Isn’t Lin Yan supposed to be an upright Child of Destiny? That means… someone else is behind this mess targeting his little bro.
d*mn! That’s a problem!
Who the heck is trying to set me up?
Seeing that it wasn’t Lin Yan’s fault, Bai Feng nodded politely. “I really appreciate your help, Brother Lin. But from this point, I reckon whoever’s behind it is quite influential.”
“I think so too,” Lin Yan agreed, scratching his head. “But the info is too chaotic now; I can’t tell who it is.”
“No rush—he’ll slip up sooner or later.” Bai Feng waved dismissively. “Just some trivial rumors. Nothing to worry about.”
Lin Yan nodded again, though he felt a bit down. He’d promised to help Bai Feng, but in the end, he hadn’t accomplished anything. Zip. Zero. Nada.
【Ding! Detected host’s aggressive attitude caused the Child of Destiny to feel defeated. Luck points +10, Fire Resistance +1.】
White Feng blinked. “Huh?”
System, what’s your deal?
Can you be even more ridiculous?
And you, Child of Destiny—you, I didn’t even care about, what’s with the sudden defeat? Is the rumor targeting you, or me?
Lin Yan had no idea what Bai Feng was thinking. He kept asking, “By the way, in a few days is the sect’s big competition. Will Brother Bai participate?”
“Not this time. My master has other plans. You’ll find out then.” Bai Feng answered with his usual politeness and a faint smile.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that the system was giving him lower and lower luck points.
“Alright, I’ll cheer for Brother Bai then.” Lin Yan grinned, giving a big thumbs-up. Clearly, Chu Feng was preparing to make a move—that way, no need to worry about rumors affecting Bai Feng.
Then he remembered something. “Oh right! I heard the new issue of Spring and Autumn is about to release. Want me to grab a copy for you?”
“No need. Don’t you remember the relationship between Teacher Chun Qiu and the Bai Family?” Bai Feng waved his hand. “And with the sect’s big competition coming up, are you even going out now?”
“It’s just a few days away—enough for a round trip!” Lin Yan chuckled nonchalantly. “With my alchemy skills, I’m not hurting for resources, but if I miss out on Teacher Chun Qiu’s new book, I’ll regret it for years.”
“…Forget it, your choice.” Bai Feng sighed helplessly. “By the way, I remember Teacher Chun Qiu launched a new product called ‘Animation Stone’. It’s the first time on sale, so quantities are limited and prices high. If you want one, better be quick.”
Lin Yan’s eyes lit up instantly. He cupped his hands seriously. “Thank you, Brother Bai. I’ll go get it right now!”
He vanished in a blink, leaving Bai Feng to stand there.
Bai Feng: “…No need to rush so much.”
But judging by Lin Yan’s reaction, the Animation Stone will probably sell like hotcakes.
And on the day of sale, it sold out faster than anyone expected—within half an hour. The expensive Animation Stones received endless praise from the Color Critics and even got hyped in the black market for high prices.
Even Yan Lin, the five-star reviewer, gave a thumbs-up: “If a person hasn’t seen Master Chun Qiu’s Animation Stone, their life is incomplete.”
Meanwhile, far away at Heavenly Sword Sect, Bai Feng was clueless about all this. Watching his Luck Points keep increasing by +1+1+1, he looked like a cabbage caught in headlights—completely puzzled about where things went wrong.
…
Sect Competition Day.
After days of, uh, relaxing (aka slacking off), Bai Feng finally snapped out of his lazy state—but he was still fixated on the steadily rising Luck Points.
“Brother, did you bring all the materials for the array setup?”
Bai Yu Mo kept nagging. Noticing that Bai Feng’s hair was slightly messy, she quickly pulled out her comb and tiptoed to help fix it.
“All set,” Bai Feng replied, watching her mess with his hair. Something felt off—like this… isn’t that what a wife does for her husband getting ready?
“Can’t do that, Brother. You’re about to face the Array Master’s disciple—a big deal for the Heavenly Sword Sect,” Bai Yu Mo insisted, not stopping her grooming.
After tidying his hair, she even adjusted Bai Feng’s clothes. Satisfied, she nodded. “Much better.”
“…Sis, isn’t this a bit more than a little sister’s concern? Feels like you’re dressing me up for a wedding.”
Bai Feng finally sensed something was off. This was more like a wife helping her hubby tie his tie before a date.
“Just worried you might embarrass yourself!” Bai Yu Mo pouted, protesting. “And between siblings, there’s no strict ‘role’. This isn’t a theater play, you know?”
“Uh, true enough.” Bai Feng nodded noncommittally. “Let’s go.”
He pushed open the door and headed towards Chu Ning Yan’s residence.
Bai Yu Mo followed a step behind—not in their usual squad formation. If Bai Feng turned around now, he’d see her face remained expressionless, but her ears had turned bright red.
‘Maybe I went a little too far…’ Bai Yu Mo lowered her head slightly, finally unable to hide the blush.
Next time, must hold back!
…
“White Feng, Yu Mo—you two arrived just in time.”
Chu Ning Yan stopped chatting with a woman nearby and waved at Bai Feng and Bai Yu Mo with a smile.
She first turned to the woman beside her and introduced, “This is the Array Genius I mentioned—Bai Feng. And this is her younger sister Bai Yu Mo.”
The woman nodded slightly. But honestly, she didn’t find anything extraordinary about Bai Feng’s so-called genius status in arrays; the girl next to him radiated a fierce sword intent, with a powerful energy hidden in her body—she looked like someone who’d crush us all.
Then, Bai Feng quickly greeted, “Master Liu Meng, hello.”
He also opened the system interface and confirmed that Liu Meng’s disciple wasn’t a Child of Destiny—relief flooded him.
He’d worried about clashing with a Child of Destiny before.
Turns out, no matter how many Child of Destinies there are, not every talented disciple is one.
“Alright, let’s head to the competition grounds.”
Chu Ning Yan waved her hand, and a flying boat appeared before them.
As everyone stepped aboard, a clear voice sounded in Bai Feng’s ear: “Are you the one who reconstructed the Hundred Sword Array during the fight?”
Bai Feng looked toward the voice and saw the girl beside Master Liu Meng, Su Lan Qian, staring at him with a challenge on her face.
“It’s me,” Bai Feng nodded, expression tightening—this wasn’t going to be easy!
“Long time no see,” Su Lan Qian approached casually, tilting her head with a smile. “I’ve been very much looking forward to meeting you after hearing you can recreate the Hundred Sword Array~”
“Oh, I’m flattered!” Bai Feng chuckled, but saw the smirk vanish instantly, replaced by a sneer.
She reached out and grabbed Bai Feng’s shoulder, then tiptoed and whispered in his ear, “Don’t think I don’t know you’re cheating. Rebuilding arrays with that ridiculous method—you think you’re so clever? I couldn’t do that even if I wanted to. You’re just a mediocre talent fooling around. Expect to get busted in the match!”
With that, her face softened into a cute smile again. She waved goodbye gently. “See you in the match—I can’t wait to see how you perform~”
Bai Feng: “…”
How dare a non-Child of Destiny act so cocky in front of me?
Thought I was planning to hold back? Nope. Now, I’ll give this arrogant little brat a serious lesson!
