Chapter 39: I Am the Immortal Emperor, V Me 50, and I Promote You to the Great General of the Immortal Sect
“Guess what? The challenge is in two parts.”
Chu Ning Yan stood proudly in front of Bai Feng and Su Lan Qian, explaining the rules with a big grin:
“The first part is breaking through arrays—just pass, no sweat. As for the arrays, I’ll keep the surprises to myself for now. When you get there, you’ll see what I mean.”
“The second part is combat. You each set up an array, then the other has to break in. This is one of the most popular array-fu contests among array mages.”
Bai Feng nodded, just having recently acquired the Yin Yang Pattern. Great timing to test out its power during the array-breaking challenge.
But honestly? Bai Feng’s more interested in how he can mess with the overly confident little punk in the second part.
Su Lan Qian also had no objections. She looked at Bai Feng with a teasing smile:
“Oh, it’s so wonderful~ I can’t wait for Junior Brother Bai to show off his genius to me~”
“…”
Ha! There will be tears and wailing soon enough.
Bai Feng ignored her. With people like her, the more you respond, the more they get riled up. Better to say nothing.
Soon, the flying boat soared toward the arena.
It seemed Chu Ning Yan and the other elders had deliberately arranged things so that Bai Feng and Su Lan Qian’s match took place right inside the main sect competition area. No forcing it outside, no distracting the crowd—just pure, direct display of strength. Let the crowd see Bai Feng’s power firsthand, and all rumors will d*e on the spot.
As Bai Feng stepped off the flying boat, he spotted a bunch of early-arriving disciples gossiping eagerly:
“Look! It’s Bai Feng!”
“At last he’s off Qingzhu Peak. I’ve never seen someone so cowardly! Like a turtle hiding in its shell!”
“But I heard Bai Brother is honestly obsessed with studying arrays. Even meals are delivered by Sister Bai!”
“You believe that? Might as well believe I’m the Immortal Emperor—V me 50, I’ll regain my memories and promote you to the Great General of the Immortal Sect.”
“I heard Bai Feng is going to compete with some other array genius. Is it true? We’ll find out soon enough!”
“And I just hope that scammer Bai Feng doesn’t embarrass our Heavenly Sword Sect.”
Yup, his reputation’s definitely taking a nosedive. Deciding not to leave Qingzhu Peak was the right call, for sure.
Hopefully after the contest, these folks will still be so ‘bold.’
“Yu Mo, aren’t you going to join the sect’s big contest too?”
He turned his gaze away from the crowd and asked Bai Yu Mo, who had been quietly sticking beside him.
Bai Yu Mo shook her head: “I don’t need to participate at the start.”
“No wonder you’re so relaxed.”
Bai Feng wasn’t surprised. With Bai Yu Mo’s strength, she could easily qualify as a seeded contestant.
As a seed, she wouldn’t need to fight the ordinary disciples early on. Only after the top hundred are chosen can she compete.
One: it saves the genius from wasting energy on meaningless battles.
Two: it lessens the blow for regular disciples, making them less discouraged and more willing to join.
“Alright, stop staring and come over. Your match gets underway soon.”
Chu Ning Yan finished chatting with the other peak masters and elders, then called out to Bai Feng and friends.
“Already so soon?”
Bai Feng was a bit surprised. He thought they’d wait until the younger disciples finished their part.
The elder who had just checked the array explained: “Because the second part involves you setting up an array, which takes time. After discussion, we moved the array-breaking to the start of the sect competition.”
Bai Feng nodded, understanding. It’s basically the opening ceremony for the sect tournament.
The Heavenly Sword Sect elders really have ingenuity.
“Then let’s begin,” Chu Ning Yan smiled at her good friend Liu Meng. “Lao Xiao Meng, please activate the array for us.”
“Can’t you just do it yourselves?”
Liu Meng sighed slightly, knowing her friend’s little tricks. She could tell Chu Ning Yan didn’t fully trust Bai Feng’s talent. Having her start the array was just a way to check her work and make sure no one sneaked in sabotages.
‘I’m not one of those people who can’t lose,’ Liu Meng thought. She and Chu Ning Yan had fought side by side too many times to play dirty now.
Besides, she’d never seen Chu Ning Yan worry about her like this for some disciple.
But still, she took the array under her control and infused her spiritual energy to activate it.
Suddenly, on the empty ground, a blazing fire soared into the sky, and an inferno rained down.
Then, amidst a sea of flames, a fiery dragon burst out, its massive body burning fiercely. It opened its mouth, revealing sharp, terrifying teeth, and roared at everyone.
Immediately, some lower-level disciples covered their ears and squatted down, trembling under the dragon’s might.
“Using dragon materials? And judging by this power, it’s not just a few drops of dragon bl**d; at least a dragon bone was involved.”
Liu Meng looked surprised. If this were a normal fire dragon array, it wouldn’t appear so vivid and alive. Plus, it carried a hint of dragon’s aura.
If a mere four-star array could do this, then using dragon bones would make it one of the strongest four-star arrays—enough to trap Yuan Ying-stage cultivators for a while.
“This isn’t something for Foundation Establishment disciples,” Liu Meng scoffed, eyeing Chu Ning Yan with a grin. She hadn’t expected the Heavenly Sword Sect to go all out like this.
“Don’t worry. It’s just intimidating presence,” Chu Ning Yan said casually. “Besides, we can stop it anytime, no need to worry about injuries.”
Originally, she hadn’t planned to use such a destructive array, but when Bai Feng said he could at least refine a five-star array, she changed her mind.
After some quick discussion with the array elders, they agreed this near-five-star array would best showcase Bai Feng’s talent.
She believed even her proud and aloof best friend would have to admit defeat after seeing Bai Feng tear through this array.
“I just worry that your new disciple might not survive,” Lin Meng said, watching the flaming dragon twist and writhe in the clouds. Even with her spiritual pupils, this array would challenge her.
Her own disciple had stepped into Jindan, and Bai Feng—though recently a Foundation stage expert—was still only at that level.
Don’t forget, the difference between full Foundation and early Jindan isn’t minor; it’s a crucial divide.
If Bai Feng truly could survive this fire dragon array, then maybe—just maybe—she’d pass on her lifelong knowledge to him.
“Relax. If I weren’t confident, I wouldn’t choose this,” Chu Ning Yan said, not bothering to argue further. “Who goes next?”
“Let my disciple start first,” Liu Meng nodded, patting Su Lan Qian’s head. She also wanted to let Chu Ning Yan and Bai Feng see how formidable the upgraded Fire Dragon Array was, so they’d be discouraged or retreat.
“Yes, Master,” Su Lan Qian said seriously, her expression fierce as she approached the array.
Even from afar, she could feel the terrifying heat radiating from the flames. It might’ve made others nervous already.
But she wasn’t. As the acknowledged number one array genius of the Northern Region, she had confidence.
Taking a deep breath, she strode toward the array.
Passing Bai Feng, she shot him a quick look:
“Feel scared? Better quit now, or you’ll get your hair and clothes burned off—you won’t look so good then.”
