Chapter 266: Huang Fei’s Dilemma
Huang Fei didn’t just pack up and leave—nope, he stuck around like a stubborn cat. But when he saw Zhang Meng Meng strolling over toward the tiny forest, his face practically dropped to the floor, a look of utter confusion plastered all over.
In that split second, he wondered—was Shen Meng Jie messing with him? Or maybe he was just losing it altogether.
While Huang Fei’s brain was doing somersaults, Zhang Meng Meng was already at the entrance of the little woods. Her figure was undeniably enviable—probably the only thing about her that people admired—though her face looked a bit tired, like she’d been up all night binge-watching dramas and eating snacks.
She stepped inside, quickly spotting Shen Meng Jie’s silhouette.
“Meng Meng, you’re here. Sorry to drag you into this,” Shen Meng Jie said softly.
Zhang Meng Meng shyly smiled, “It’s okay. No need for all that. We’re friends, right?” She handed over her mask with a gentle gesture.
Shen Meng Jie took the mask, her gaze softening as she whispered, “I’ve found a lead.”
“Oh, really?” Zhang Meng Meng paused, then grinned, “What kind of lead?”
Instead of directly answering, Shen Meng Jie changed the subject, “Meng Meng, do you think I’ve been kind to you in the dorm? Because you’re so shy, we all like to protect you.”
With her eyes downcast and her voice tiny but clear, Zhang Meng Meng replied, “Yeah, everyone’s nice to me.”
“But… why are you treating me like this? Did I do something to offend you?”
“Did I anger you so much that you want to humiliate me on the shame pedestal? Do you want to utterly destroy me?”
Zhang Meng Meng took a step back but dared not meet Shen Meng Jie’s eyes. Her tone shifted from shy to panicked: “Dream, Meng Jie, what are you saying? Are you saying I’m hurting you?”
Shen Meng Jie remained unmoved by her panic, only softly continuing, “Remember when we took that photo together? After my phone screen went dark, I told you my phone’s unlocking code.”
“So you knew my password.”
“And every night during baths, you would always say you felt embarrassed and didn’t come along with us…”
“We even teased you about it—‘You’re just a girl, what’s the big deal?’—but you took advantage of us leaving to mess with my phone, didn’t you?”
Zhang Meng Meng stepped back again, shaking her head violently. “No, I didn’t! We’re roommates—I wouldn’t do that to you! It’s not me, really!”
“Yeah, we’re roommates, good friends. So why are you doing this to me? Maybe because of that guy?”
The moment she said it, Zhang Meng Meng stopped retreating and looked up directly at Shen Meng Jie. That single sentence revealed her deepest secret, and she couldn’t stay in denial—she just wanted to know how Shen Meng Jie knew.
Seeing her expression—the mixture of guilt and panic—Shen Meng Jie almost confirmed her suspicion: “You really are a silent mosquito that bites people to d*ath.”
Zhang Meng Meng closed her eyes and let out a soft laugh. “It was me. But Shen Meng Jie, what about you? Aren’t you supposed to be a good person?”
“Can you deny that those flirtatious chats in your phone are just made-up stories?”
Shen Meng Jie fell silent—she couldn’t deny it, because it was the truth, plain and simple.
Seeing her silence, Zhang Meng Meng pressed on, “So I haven’t lied at all!”
“I mean, you have so many people who like you, right? Why? Why do you keep hanging onto Huang Fei?”
Shen Meng Jie had never imagined that this would somehow involve Huang Fei.
Not only was she stunned, but Huang Fei, who had been watching silently from the side, froze as well.
His gaze fell on the emotionally wrecked Zhang Meng Meng. He never expected that she actually liked him…
“You like Huang Fei?” Shen Meng Jie managed a bitter smile. “Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“How am I supposed to bring it up? He’s totally head over heels for you, but what do you do? String him along, give him a glimmer of hope, then turn around and chat up other guys, keep things ambiguous…”
“You’re the one cheating and leading him on! I’ve never seen someone so shameless. In our hometown, people like you are considered flirtatious trash—sluts, really.”
“So I thought I’d expose everything you’ve done, let Huang Fei see your true colors clearly…”
Her voice broke as she covered her face and sobbed. “But I never thought—that even after knowing all this—I saw him still come after you, still help you. If only you would disappear—then he’d see me…”
“You shouldn’t be like this!”
Hearing that voice, Zhang Meng Meng turned around and saw Huang Fei had appeared behind her out of nowhere.
He looked at her and said, “It’s me who likes Shen Meng Jie, not her.”
“I just want to tell you, Shen Meng Jie isn’t a good person.”
“Her actions are indeed dishonorable, but what’s the difference if you do the same?”
“You had countless ways to tell me, but you chose the most extreme method instead.”
“She treats you like a friend, yet you personally nail her to the shame pedestal—you just want to ruin her…”
At that moment, Huang Fei finally understood why the old boss just had to tell Shen Meng Jie himself.
He should have guessed it long ago, that all of this seemed somehow related to him…
Shen Meng Jie looked at Zhang Meng Meng with complicated eyes.
She never imagined that the person who tried so hard to take care of her every day, who laughed with her in the dorm, who considered her a friend—was actually seen as a promiscuous floozy in her eyes.
If she didn’t like herself, she should just say it outright. She wasn’t desperate enough to throw herself shamelessly at others.
If she liked Huang Fei, she should just pursue him herself…
She didn’t want to linger here anymore. She took out her phone and looked at Zhang Meng Meng.
“All our conversations—I’ve recorded them. Do what you will,” Shen Meng Jie said, then deliberately brushed past her without looking back, leaving completely.
After Shen Meng Jie left, Zhang Meng Meng sank to her knees, burying her face in her chest.
Huang Fei wanted to go after her, but just then, he heard her voice.
“Did I really do something wrong?”
He paused, looking at her crying on the ground, then tilted his head to the sky.
“Actually, putting everything aside, you didn’t do anything wrong. You let thirty-seven people—including me—know that we’re fish in Shen Meng Jie’s pond.”
“But after all this time together, can you really tell if Shen Meng Jie truly considers you a friend? You probably can sense whether she’s sincere, right…”
