Chapter 154: Killing the Loli
Bai Yu recalled the last time Shen Shuyun chatted with her about this Sky Fox fellow. Apparently, they triggered a task somewhere. If they completed it, they could earn a chance to draw a prize from which they could obtain items from their previous lives.
Everyone was sporting entirely new identities now, starting from scratch; it was like trying to bake a cake without flour—impossible! Forget about their old items. Even a plain old handgun could prove super useful. So, it was safe to say that this little piece of news would attract more folks than what happened back at Eternal Life Village.
This was a golden opportunity! Whatever items they could snag from their previous lives would just pile on advantages like snowballs rolling downhill.
There was no way to explain this to Zhao Mingyue, nor was there any point; when the time came, whatever item they drew could just be declared a “new item.”
It wasn’t that she wanted to fool Zhao Mingyue, it’s just that sometimes, a little fib is more crucial than the truth.
“White Day Amusement Park, let’s see where that is…” Zhao Mingyue said, clutching the amusement park ticket. She searched the name and—surprise, surprise—found the amusement park was indeed in Tianchang City.
“An abandoned hospital, an abandoned school, and now another abandoned amusement park? It feels like any place that’s out of business is just dying to attract a bunch of ghosts. At least, that’s how it is in Tianchang City!”
Zhao Mingyue was tired of talking about haunted places. She felt it wasn’t the land that was cursed, but rather the residents of the Ghost Domain—most haunted spots were because of them!
“The start date is July 3rd, which is the day after tomorrow!”
And the day after tomorrow also happened to be when Bai Yu and the Dragon Lady were set to head to the back village of Eternal Life Village.
“Yuyu, where should we go first the day after tomorrow? The amusement park or Eternal Life Village?”
Bai Yu remained silent, pondering. There was some urgency about Eternal Life Village; the biggest problem was that she still had no clue how to shield Mingyue from that village’s curse.
As the Dragon Lady had pointed out, the whole place was swarming with the curses of the Four Evil Gods. Ordinary folks who wandered in quickly turned into believers or met their end!
The Dragon Lady suggested using her talisman, which could repel some curses, but it had a time limit. It was merely a backup plan; if they could find something better, the talisman would be unnecessary.
“Let’s hit up the amusement park first, and I’ll let the Dragon Lady know when we get back.”
Postponing Eternal Life Village by a day or two was no biggie. Bai Yu suspected that once they passed that ticket’s time limit, they wouldn’t be able to enter the park anymore. That ticket was crucial!
Once they wrapped up at the amusement park, they might even draw some equipment. If she managed to draw her favored sword, then they were golden!
“Okay-dokey!” Zhao Mingyue nodded as she stuffed the ticket into her pocket. She also thought going to the amusement park sounded like a better idea. The thought of Eternal Life Village, especially the back village, gave her the willies.
Going to the front village before helped ease some of her fears, but it certainly wasn’t a complete cure.
“Bai Yu, what’s the big deal about where you’re going?”
“There’s a task there. Completing it could yield massive benefits.”
“Ah, I see!”
They dashed home, and the 5-kilometer run left Zhao Mingyue only slightly out of breath; her improved stamina was really showing!
The very first thing she did upon getting home was plop the ticket onto the table.
Bai Yu’s bl**d Thread slithered out across the table, wrapping around the ticket. Moments later, it began to shift and shimmer, and tiny red letters appeared on the ticket.
Buzz. Just as Zhao Mingyue’s fingers brushed against the ticket, her phone vibrated in her pocket—it was that black phone used for issuing tasks.
[You have triggered the hidden task: White Day Amusement Park]
[White Day Amusement Park]
[Task Difficulty: 4.5 Stars]
[Task Requirements: Arrive before 9 PM on July 3rd at the main gate of White Day Amusement Park. Hold the special item ‘Ticket of Resentment’ to enter. Without it, you won’t be able to access the official task scene.]
[Task Objective: Find the park manager’s daughter and free her.]
[Task Rewards: 2 chances for item draws, +7 random body stat points, +1 Nightmarish Origin]
[Mengmeng is sick. She has cancer. On her hospital bed, she said her favorite thing was to see children smile.]
[I want to do something for her within my means. Seeing that sweet little face of hers smile again is my greatest wish.]
[I spent all my savings to build her an amusement park, where many kids can come play and show genuine smiles.]
[Will Mengmeng be happy? I don’t know.]
[It’s been seven days since she last talked to me. The food I made for her—her favorite cola chicken wings—placed by her bedside hasn’t been touched, and the weather’s been gloomy lately. The sky is all foggy and heavy.]
[She’s sleeping, I must not disturb her rest. I should leave this place now.]
[It’s already the tenth day. The amusement park is set to open on the tenth day, but she still hasn’t woken up, and no one has come to visit.]
[Very few people come to play. I hear them saying this place isn’t fun at all and that there’s nothing here but calling me a fraud. No ferris wheel at all!]
[Mengmeng woke up on the fourteenth day, two whole weeks. The first thing she did was grab my arm and whisper, “Daddy, don’t go! I built you an amusement park in my dream! Do you like it? The doctors are all lying to us; that day was April Fools’, wasn’t it?”]
[She said, “Look, Daddy! A giant ferris wheel! So many kids are laughing on it! You love the laughter of children, don’t you?”]
[She also said, “I’m sorry, Daddy, the food went bad.”]
[I told her to wake up and come outside for some sun.]
[Today, the sun is shining! What a big sun!]
Zhao Mingyue read the task synopsis word for word, frowning deeply. She read it multiple times but couldn’t quite figure out what it was trying to convey—was it just a diary? It felt all muddled!
There wasn’t much detail about the amusement park, merely that it was a gift from a father to his sick daughter. Or wait, maybe it was a gift from the daughter to the father?
But she was used to it; the task synopses rarely contained any useful clues, only giving a rough background.
“So… we’re going there to k*ll Mengmeng, right?”
