Chapter 183
A few hundred believers might seem like a lot, but when it comes to killing, they’re really not that overwhelming. The tricky part about these believers isn’t their numbers, but their remarkable recovery capabilities.
Decapitation, dismemberment, throat slashing, heart piercing—none of these are fatal to them. The evil spirits within can mend those injuries faster than a fast food drive-thru.
The only way to truly deal with them? Turn them into a nice beef stew. You’ve gotta chop them into tiny pieces and slay the evil spirits lurking inside. Only then can you call it a day.
The crowd in the sacrificial square had dwindled from over four hundred to barely one hundred and fifty.
The two godmothers were genuinely starting to sweat.
Believers were their lifeblood, their hopes for an escape.
But the village didn’t just have those four hundred; there were more out there, weaker ones that hadn’t shown up. Just in case of an emergency, they’d scatter into the woods at the first sign of trouble.
As long as these believers were alive, there was still hope.
A wave of negative energy swept through, forcing all the believers to stop and stand there like deer caught in headlights.
Bai Yu swiftly lopped off the head of a believer clad in red with a couple of swift strokes and gobbled up the bl**d threads.
Before she could strike again, a voice called from behind.
“Let’s have a chat. Just tell me what you want and then get lost.”
It was a tone that felt like asking for a favor but also came off as high and mighty. Bai Yu didn’t even need to turn around to know who it was.
Calmly wrapping the red clothes in bl**d threads, she turned to face a tall, faceless believer. Inside him, a top-tier evil spirit was at play, and controlling him was one of the two godmothers.
“I’ve already mentioned that if you could help me deal with Burning Heart, that would be great. She’s currently inside my body.”
“Let’s pick another request. We can’t help you with that.”
“Where is the embryo of Burning Heart?”
“……”
“Is that how it is? Well, you two are worthless then.”
The Brahma Sound Godmother’s gaze was a razor-sharp line of red, fast as a striking snake.
—
An automobile rolled to a steady stop in front of Eternal Life Village. Chen Yunshi swung open the door and stepped out, standing in front of the Dragon Lady’s vehicle and gazing intently at the distant mountain forests.
She extended her hand and sensed something.
“Just as I suspected, it’s trouble. The curse power here has weakened considerably.”
“The magnetic field is all messed up. Brahma and A She wouldn’t abandon this place unless it’s absolutely crucial. They’ve wanted to break free of this place’s shackles for a long time.”
“After all these years of effort, it all went to waste in one night. Half of their believers must be dead by now.”
The dark mist, formed by Qian Mu’s negative thoughts, clung to Chen Yunshi, allowing her to sense the same things Qian Mu could.
“Let’s go in and take a look. Didn’t you say you were the seventh on some list? It’s just Eternal Life Village; why the nerves? That’s just a place I, no, we used to control.”
Qian Mu’s voice remained monotonous, devoid of emotion. However, there was an undertone of excitement about her return. If they could destroy anything that kept her tethered to Eternal Life Village, she’d be reborn through Chen Yunshi.
Finally free of this place; she wouldn’t have to come back after tonight.
“You need to come back. If it really is the Dragon Lady, you won’t get a second chance,” Chen Yunshi slammed the car door and strode toward the back of the village with determination.
“Yes, yes, our seventh master is clever and cautious, but you’re still here, aren’t you?”
“Shut it.”
“No, no, I still have questions. You’ve never told me what exactly happened to you. I could care less, but I’m genuinely curious—how are you only seventh on that list?”
“Only seventh?” Chen Yunshi halted in her tracks, “What are you expecting? Qian Mu, your expectations are way too low. Just embrace your status as a waste instead of trying to talk big.”
“I thought, given your talents and smarts, you’d at least be in the top three. I’m not trying to insult you; I genuinely think that. I’m proud to be your shadow.”
Chen Yunshi quickened her pace, mulling over Qian Mu’s words. “First, I don’t need some garbage evil god’s pride. Second, do you even know what kinds of monsters are in the top three? If that number one person were brought here, a hundred or a thousand of us wouldn’t be enough for her to chop.”
“Oh, impressive! But I still think you’re even more impressive—don’t keep boosting others’ egos, alright?” Qian Mu’s dark mist morphed into the upper half of a glamorous woman, whose hands gently embraced Chen Yunshi’s head.
Blinded for a moment, Chen Yunshi suddenly slipped under a tree branch and plummeted down. Thankfully, she reacted quickly; otherwise, she’d have been a mess on the ground.
“Qian Mu!”
“Whoops, sorry! Didn’t mean to. I was just trying to comfort you, you know?”
“If you do that again, I’ll yank you out of my body!”
Chen Yunshi was ready to explode. This Qian Mu was clearly brimming with potential, even more than the Burning Heart Goddess; at least in terms of brains, she blew 99% of evil gods out of the water. How could she waste it all by living in her body?
And she was supposed to be the second sister of a godmother! She was even less competent than Brahma and A She.
Now, she followed Chen Yunshi around like a clingy partner, talking about nonsense. Ordinary couples don’t spend twenty-four hours glued together—even this gal was literally living inside her body day and night.
Utilizing her powers against Zhao Mingyue while throwing up walls at every turn.
“Ah, ah, I believe you! You wouldn’t do that to me; you care too much!”
“You…” Chen Yunshi was at her wit’s end. “Fine. Keep it up.”
“If possible, I prefer you calling me Xin’er instead of Qian Mu. I really hate that name, like, really really hate it.”
“What’s that got to do with me?”
“Of course it does! I’m just asking you to change it up! What I say doesn’t matter if it’s not related to you. Do you know, Yunshi, I’m called Qian Mu by my believers because my original self—or the embryo—had a thousand eyes all over me?”
“I believed the Burning Heart and gouged my own eyes out. I didn’t want to see this filthy village anymore, nor did I want to lay eyes on the men barging into my room. I wanted to escape it all.”
“So, I became Qian Mu, forever unable to close my eyes and always forced to watch.”
“A thousand eyes.” Qian Mu dragged out the words, “A thousand…”
“Ping Shan Village, I despise everyone here. I hate it all.”
“My first act after becoming a godmother was revenge.”
“They want eternal life, huh? Fine, I’ll grant it to them! I’ll seal them in wax, remnants of evil thoughts. Once their souls are trapped, I’ll make sure they’re constantly hungry and tired, torturing them every single moment.”
“But do you know what the saddest part is?”
“Wishing for something you cared about turns hollow once you achieve it.”
“It’s a tragic theme from one of your favorite books, remember?”
“A shared vow with two people, but only one keeps it.”
“Filled with resentment and grievance yet no one to hold accountable.”
“Because with no expectations left, there comes a sense of release.”
“Shut your mouth! I told you to shut it!” Chen Yunshi’s head was spinning. She realized Qian Mu had gotten more chatty since regaining her consciousness. “Aren’t you looking for that monk? What was his name? An Que?”
“No, I’m not looking for him; he’s a heartbreaker.”
“Fine, fine! Once this is over, I’ll inquire about him. If I find him, I’ll have him kneel before you and then gouge his heart out to see if your name’s in there, alright? Deal?”
“Uh-huh, uh-huh!” Qian Mu nodded eagerly, her excitement akin to a little girl promised a stuffed toy.
“Now, you be quiet! Not a peep from you, got it?”
“Tragedy one: willing to deceive oneself rather than confront the harsh truth.”
“You! Shut! Up!”
—
“Is it all gone now?”
The Dragon Lady had taken control of the body, standing alone in the center of the sacrificial platform surrounded by a sea of corpses and scattered limbs.
All the believers had been slain, the power of the evil god weakened, the mist had dissipated, curses no longer haunted, and the negative thoughts had retreated. All that remained was silence and more silence.
“Hiss, my body…”
The instant she regained control, the reality hit the Dragon Lady like a ton of bricks. She nearly crumpled to her knees from the sheer exhaustion and pain, as if her bones had been shattered and put back together again.
“You really don’t know how to appreciate the delicateness of a lady, do you? This is a very violent way to treat someone’s body.”
With no decorum left, the Dragon Lady plopped down on the heap of corpses.
Before she could work up more theatrics to blackmail Bai Yu using her own body, the Dragon Lady suddenly sensed something.
“Who?!”
She flicked a dragon scale like a dart toward a nearby house, where a figure stepped out nonchalantly.
“That’s of no concern.” Chen Yunshi, concealed behind a black mask, donned a long black coat and tall boots, “Dragon Lady, there’s something I want to discuss with you.”
“Giggling, oh how interesting! A mantis stalking a cicada, with the yellow sparrow lurking behind—how certain are you I can’t take you down right now?”
“Certain.”
“And now?”
The Dragon Lady stood tall, her exhausted body reviving as the bl**d threads spread.
“Friend, I don’t know who you are, but I’d wager you know her—the lovely lady inside me?”
Her voice, laced with mischief, dripped with playful sarcasm, “She’s called Bai Yu.”
