Chapter 199: Did You See That Glutton? My Wife
In the hallway, all the evil spirits halted their movements, surrounding Bai Yu like she was the main dish at a buffet, including those belonging to An Tianhe. The pressure Bai Yu radiated was just too intense; not a single one of them dared to speak.
The bl**d threads slithering on the walls were reminiscent of giant pythons, leaving an indelible impression on them. They were starting to question whether such mastery over the spirit realm was even achievable by an ordinary ghost.
Bai Yu stood at the center of this chaotic circle, where the closest evil spirits had already been devoured by the bl**d threads, leaving a two-meter radius of absolute ‘no-go’ zone.
Gripping the cold kn*fe handle, Bai Yu surveyed the scene, finally locking her gaze on An Tianhe and his gang of five.
Some nearby spirits were a bit uncertain about whether this guy was indeed one of hers. Not that it mattered—she was hungry for all the ghosts in the vicinity. Luckily, she was still in a recovery phase, so she didn’t feel stuffed at all.
Having lost part of her soul, her body instinctively craved the energy of the surrounding spirits—like when you see a glass of water after drifting in the desert, the thirst just hits you much harder.
She had been gorging on the Red Clothes spirit a while back, stretching her “stomach” way beyond its previous limits. Where she used to be able to only gulp down three or four, now swallowing five or six would be absolutely no problem.
The bl**d threads sealed off the escape routes for the evil spirits. At her feet, the writhing bl**d threads surged outward, almost showing off their sharp teeth at the terrified spirits.
In situations where there were more Red Clothes than regular spirits, using a kn*fe was overly complicated; the simplest and most effective method was to consume them directly with her bl**d threads. The only downside was the rather violent messiness of the spectacle—not exactly the elegant art of a proper dinner.
Not that she cared in the slightest about the finesse of ghost-slaying, though.
With a slight tilt of her head, she signaled the evil spirits to attack, and they all charged at her with claws and teeth ready, driven by sinister forces.
What awaited them, of course, were the omnipresent and brutal bl**d threads.
The strength of the bl**d threads was immense; a single charge could shatter some spirits into pieces that would dissolve into clouds of black smoke, only to be consumed by the very threads that ripped them apart.
Countless bl**d threads surged around Bai Yu, snapping up evil spirits without a second thought, wrapping them in cocoons before dragging them off to be devoured elsewhere.
It looked like a pack of headless pythons feasting on spirits without a moment to digest, the whole scene resembling a fully-stuffed serpent.
For Bai Yu, this was a grand feast.
For the onlookers, it was nothing short of a one-sided massacre.
Bai Yu didn’t even move from her spot; she didn’t need to raise her kn*fe even once as the ground turned into a graveyard of limbs, many spirits being devoured without even a whimper, their final struggles expressed only in clouds of black mist.
The mist was similar to the bl**d of evil spirits, but unfortunately for them, Bai Yu was determined to leave nothing to waste, consuming every last bit as if she were polishing off a buffet platter—no leftovers at all.
“Gluttony…”
An Tianhe felt Li Tianan’s voice echoing in his耳边; those words pierced his heart like a steel needle.
His lips trembled as he watched the massacre unfold—this was the first time he’d ever witnessed anything like it.
He was no stranger to ghost-on-ghost action; he was usually the one pulling the strings, commanding spirits to take down others, making his own stronger in the process.
He had always bragged that he was the best at manipulating spirits in this world.
But the more he saw, the more terrifying he realized Gluttony truly was.
The latest spirit to be swallowed was one of his own minions.
And what could he do? Absolutely nothing.
He had tried calling back his spirits, but the thick bl**d threads had sealed off the area so completely that there was no way to regain them. He could only helplessly watch as years of effort were casually wiped away by Gluttony—not even crumbs left for the birds.
“Master, Master.” Zhou Li’s face was deathly pale, tugging on An Tianhe’s sleeve, “All my spirits are gone!”
“Big Brother, is there any way to save them? With all of us here, shouldn’t we be able to…?” Sun Hai jumped in, panicking like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
He had barely relished his own Red Clothes spirit for a whole year, relying on it to strike it rich and reach the pinnacle of life. But now, with things going as they were, it was all but doomed to be laid on Gluttony’s plate.
Both of them were losing their minds over this development, not knowing beforehand what kind of catastrophe this would turn into.
An Tianhe looked back at Li Tianan, and all the arrogance and mockery were gone from his eyes, replaced by desperation.
“Old Li, Li Tianan, you know Gluttony well—can’t you…?”
Li Tianan clicked his tongue and shoved his elegant flintlock into his pocket. “What do you want me to do? I don’t know Gluttony that well, honestly! If I had a way to help, I would’ve already.” He grimaced. “Did you see how she demolished my array upon arrival? No mercy at all—she pulverized my soul nails.”
Li Tianan shrugged. “I warned you before! Don’t go poking around! Just the five of you going over there is basically a s*icide mission, you know?”
“Cough.” He cleared his throat, watching Bai Yu’s rampage. “Actually, I did say something wrong the other night when I mentioned that she has the strength of an evil spirit.”
“You’ve seen it now; even evil spirits can’t take her on.”
“But you can’t blame me! If I had said she could crush an evil spirit, you wouldn’t have believed me.”
“Seriously, An Tianhe, you’re really that much of a fool?”
“You’ve already visited my ghost gate three times! What are you even asking about? Use your brain for a bit! To be called Gluttony, she fully decimated my ghost gate in one night, terrifying all the little spirits. Did you ever think about why?”
“Can’t you put yourself in my shoes? If you let your Red Clothes loose, would it have that kind of effect?”
Li Tianan couldn’t help but joke a little at this point.
“Hey, Old An, didn’t you always have a thing for female ghosts? Especially the pretty ones like graceful and aloof lords or sweet little lolis—those are totally your type. Let’s be real; they’re just corpses now. How appealing can that be, especially if they died in an accident? Don’t you find that eerie at night, or is it just as spooky with the lights off?”
“Honestly, speaking of beautiful female spirits, have you seen Gluttony?”
“I bet you can’t find a prettier ghost in this world than her.”
As soon as he said that, An Tianhe’s eyes actually found their way to Bai Yu’s face. He gulped hard; she truly was breathtaking, far surpassing any of the female spirits he had ever encountered.
Wiping the sweat from his brow, An Tianhe clenched his jaw.
He wasn’t quite sure what he was feeling at that moment.
Perhaps it was regret over losing his Red Clothes and having to start over, or sheer anger at Gluttony’s overwhelming strength—how nice it would have been if she were just a regular ghost! He could’ve brought her back and enjoyed every night in paradise.
But one thing he was certain of was that now he finally understood why she was called ‘Gluttony.’ Anyone who witnessed her devouring would instinctively have those two words pop into their heads.
“Uncle Li, what’s the deal with this ghost?” Lin Zhou squeezed over to stand next to Li Tianan, still in disbelief after watching Bai Yu wipe out a bunch of evil spirits, leaving only four Red Clothes behind.
“Origins? Hard to say, but she’s definitely in my territory.”
“Okay, fair enough.”
Lin Zhou felt a mix of wicked delight and sympathy.
A creature like this running loose in the district? Li Tianan had it rough.
If she ever turned violent on the streets, even ten of Li Tianan wouldn’t be enough to handle it.
But what could they do? They were helpless.
“You seem remarkably unfazed,” Lin Zhou raised an eyebrow, whispering to Li Tianan. Given the eerie silence, everyone else immediately leaned in to catch this tidbit.
What was his deal? How could he be so composed? Wasn’t he scared that after Gluttony finished off these spirits, she’d serve them up for dessert?
Watching the brutal process unfold, no one really believed she wasn’t a complete madwoman.
This red-clhed monster could easily decide to wipe them out too.
Li Tianan noticed everyone staring at him and nearly chuckled. He couldn’t exactly say, “Well, Gluttony’s best buddy is my convenience store employee, so I’m in no danger, folks!”
Before he could open his mouth, the door behind him swung wide open again.
With a wisp of celestial energy, Zhao Mingyue tilted her head to peek outside. Upon spotting Bai Yu clearing out the little ghosts, she rushed out, hammer in hand.
This startled everyone! Lin Zhou instinctively reached out to stop her, nearly wondering what was going on in Zhao Mingyue’s head.
What’s wrong with you? Can’t you see there’s a m*rder machine out here? You don’t think this is a playful game, do you?
Looking at Zhao Mingyue’s delicate face, Lin Zhou’s anger subsided a notch.
“Get back inside already!”
Zhao Mingyue blinked at the man blocking her, clearly puzzled. “What?”
“I said get back inside NOW! Are you trying to get us all killed?”
“Why can’t I come out?” Zhao Mingyue retorted, shoving Lin Zhou aside with surprising strength, nearly sending him sprawling.
In front of everyone, Zhao Mingyue made her way toward the massacre zone, and it was too late to stop her.
Then, what she did next knocked their brains for a loop—they could hardly believe it.
The girl boldly walked up to Gluttony and waved. “Bai Yu! Do you need my help? You’re just dealing with Red Clothes now, right? Shouldn’t I be getting a turn?”
Bai Yu, with her back turned, seemed unfazed. After hearing Zhao Mingyue, she withdrew the bl**d threads and said in a chilling tone, “Sure, how many do you want?”
“Hmm…” Zhao Mingyue glanced at the remaining four evil spirits. “One or two, though for two, it has to be those two weaklings. I can’t handle the others!”
The weaker ones she pointed at were naturally An Tianhe’s and Sun Hai’s spirits. To her, they oozed the least malevolence, marking them as the weakest among those she’d come across.
“Fine.” Bai Yu nodded in agreement.
“Alright, time to show off my skills!”
Zhao Mingyue practically stood shoulder to shoulder with Bai Yu, their closeness leaving everyone speechless and scratching their heads in disbelief.
This wasn’t a dream, was it?
A seemingly foolish girl had a closer relationship with the goddess of d*ath than anyone could fathom?
This revelation was even more shocking than finding out Gluttony wasn’t actually insane.
Meanwhile, Li Tianan shrugged. “As you can see, they’re partners—no, it’s more like family.”
“They’re pretty tight.” he shot a glance at An Tianhe. “And let me tell you, Gluttony is not just simply protective. You catch my drift?”
In other words, it was a good thing An Tianhe hadn’t gone berserk on Zhao Mingyue, or this centipede of a god would have made sure he’d be chopped up into pieces.
An Tianhe wiped more sweat off his brow, looking like a ghost himself.
When he saw Zhao Mingyue, he couldn’t help but think about how he wanted things to happen between them—hopefully tonight! He even had his plans ready, just waiting for the mission to wrap up.
“Hey, Master.” Zhao Mingyue called back, “You all should go inside. Wait for me and Bai Yu to wrap up these Red Clothes before you come out.”
“Sure.” Li Tianan opened the door.
“Uh, don’t let An and the others come in; I want to have some words with them.”
“Fine.” Li Tianan ignored the bewildered expressions on An Tianhe and the others’ faces, waiting for Xia Feihang and Lin Zhou to enter before slamming the door shut, giving no chance for An Tianhe’s group to slip inside.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to help; it was just impossible to do so.
Bai Yu intended to k*ll, and there was absolutely nothing he could do to stop her. He’d already spilled all the beans to An Tianhe, and the rest was up to Bai Yu. What happened next with the bodies, and whether police would get involved, was all her business. He trusted her to handle it well.
The doors sealed off by bl**d threads left An Tianhe and his companions as pale as sheets, even as Zhao Mingyue continued to smile at them.
“Uncle An, as a junior, I want to say something today.”
“Ghosts aren’t just tools; they’re companions.”
“Though I’m quite curious about how you managed to… you know, with a female ghost. Just curious, you know?”
