Chapter 241: My Lolita Ghost Wife
Lu Liangting was in a tizzy. He still hadn’t sorted out the mess with Li Tianan, and now his mother was piling on the stress by insisting he attend a summer family gathering. To make matters worse, she had to bring up Nianqiu’s memorial day!
He didn’t want anyone meddling in anything related to Nianqiu.
“I’ll handle Nianqiu’s stuff myself! No need for your worries!”
He terminated the call without waiting for Xia Qingrong to say another word, shoving his phone into his pocket, his mood as dark as a thundercloud.
He couldn’t wrap his head around why his dad would marry Xia Qingrong in the first place.
Xia Qingrong had no impressive background; before meeting his father, she was just an accountant from some village. To summarize, she had no money, no power, and no background. She looked ordinary and had a mediocre education. She didn’t possess any of the refined arts, not even chess or calligraphy.
It’s not that he looked down on women like her, nor did he think Xia Qingrong wasn’t worthy of the Lu family. There were plenty of cases where mismatched couples found happiness.
The main issue was—couldn’t she just be a bit kinder?
Isn’t it a basic requirement to be gentle, considerate, and not aggressive?
She knew nothing and couldn’t help with any company affairs. So why not just stay home as a full-time housewife? Cooking and laundry weren’t even her tasks; she only needed to keep an eye on the kids and contribute a bit to the family.
But what did she do instead?
She favored sons over daughters.
As a woman herself, she had the audacity to favor sons over daughters.
Nianqiu suffered enough at her hands while she was alive, facing public humiliation because of her. Nianqiu even developed depression and withdrew from the outside world.
At Nianqiu’s funeral, she didn’t look sad at all. She mingled like a social butterfly, chatting and laughing with guests while neglecting the funeral duties entirely, handing everything over to others.
Turning her child’s funeral into a cocktail party? Even if that child wasn’t biologically hers, that behavior was appalling.
Walking into the police station, Lu Liangting poured a cup of hot water for the old cop.
“Uncle Li, do we have any details on the deceased?”
Uncle Li looked up at Lu Liangting and pointed at his computer screen, “Found it! The deceased’s name is Xia Zhenqiang, originally from Qiugang Village. His family came to cancel his household registration last December 30th. I was there that day, so I remember it a bit. Turns out to be the same guy.”
“This old man used to work at a construction site. He fell and a steel bar pierced his stomach. After more than two weeks in the hospital, his condition suddenly worsened, and he sadly passed away.”
“The family’s pretty unfortunate too. They have two or three kids, but none want to take care of the old man. The only granddaughter has a psychological illness and stays home, needing both grandparents to take care of her. She hasn’t even gone to school.”
“Oh, and it’s been half a year, but the old man’s workers’ compensation hasn’t come through. His family has been pestering about it. I feel for them, but it’s really not my problem to deal with.”
“I’ll go over personally in the afternoon. If there’s any news, I’ll let you know.”
“Thanks, Uncle Li.” Lu Liangting thanked him repeatedly, his eyes flickering.
What a coincidence! Qiugang Village was right next to Xia Qingrong’s family’s village, with most people there sharing the surname Xia. He had even visited that place before!
Exiting the police station, Lu Liangting messaged Zhao Mingyue, summarizing the situation regarding Qiugang Village and the old man, and also inquiring when Bai Yu planned to take action. He didn’t expect much from the police; it was obvious something had gone down there, and the police wouldn’t uncover anything useful.
—
Meanwhile, Zhao Mingyue was in the kitchen watching Bai Yu don an apron, getting ready to cook. Every time she saw Bai Yu cooking, it was hard not to smile. The little form on her tiptoes, paired with those cute pink cat socks—with a faint pink cat face and little cat ears sticking out—was just too adorable.
This little one, every day, put on an apron to cook. She used to joke that Bai Yu was like a little maid, but the more she saw, the less that seemed true. That proud little expression, and sometimes she would remind her to wash her hands. When nothing was going on, Bai Yu would clean the room—it was just missing a pocket money allowance for school!
This gave her a déjà vu—wasn’t that a “Lolita Mama”?
Thinking of that, Zhao Mingyue felt a bit shy.
She called Bai Yu her sister, being cared for during the day and having her mischief in the evenings.
If Bai Yu was the “Lolita Mama,” did that make her some sort of rebellious daughter?
Covering her face with her hands and turning away, Zhao Mingyue felt her expression must be quite strange at that moment.
Why couldn’t she shake off that thought? The more she thought about it, the more real it seemed!
It was all Bai Yu’s fault for being such a caretaker, capable of everything from strategy to cooking! She handled chores, worried about Zhao Mingyue’s safety, and followed her everywhere. With no pocket money of her own, she indirectly got some from Lu Liangting.
Okay, that was off; this wasn’t a “Lolita Mama” but a “Lolita Wife.”
Maybe Zhao Mingyue had saved the galaxy in a past life to have such a capable ghost as a wife in this one.
Bai Yu was busy preparing sweet and sour ribs; she glanced at Zhao Mingyue, who was grinning stupidly, blinking in confusion.
Why was this girl so happy? They had been discussing heavy topics at the park earlier!
Or did she enjoy the big sister role?
Whatever; let her be.
Whether sister or little sister, let her enjoy it. The difference wasn’t that big, and it satisfied her little vanity.
At that moment, a message pinged on Zhao Mingyue’s phone. She casually glanced at it.
“Bai Yu, come look at this.”
“What is it?”
Placing the phone in front of Bai Yu, Zhao Mingyue whispered, “Lu Liangting has news! It’s about an old man who died in a place called Qiugang Village six months ago. Should we go check it out?”
“What do you think?” Bai Yu didn’t decide but handed the choice straight to Zhao Mingyue.
“Li, the manager, has helped us a lot. He knows plenty about gates and ghosts. I think we should investigate and decide what to do based on the situation. If it’s not too dangerous, I’ll handle it. But if it’s really dangerous or the manager is in trouble, then we should back off. How does that sound?”
Zhao Mingyue tilted her head, pondering, but didn’t immediately jump to a conclusion.
They couldn’t take this lightly; she had a good relationship with Li Tianan, but this time she was going to help rescue someone alongside Bai Yu, so she needed to consider Bai Yu’s thoughts too.
“Sounds good.”
“Okay, I’ll take a rest today and head there tomorrow morning?”
“Sure.”
Having just returned from Pinghai City, Bai Yu was probably tired. Better to rest for a night. If Li Tianan happened to meet a bad end overnight, there was nothing they could do. Plus, the police would definitely be going in the afternoon. Their presence wouldn’t make a difference.
At lunchtime, while praising Bai Yu’s cooking skills, Zhao Mingyue suggested, “Bai Yu, since it seems quiet this afternoon, how about we go shopping?”
“Shopping?”
“Yeah, yeah! The convenience store isn’t open, and I don’t have to work as hard anymore. It’s a holiday! Last time, Lu Liangting gave us so much money, so we should treat ourselves!”
As she spoke, Zhao Mingyue transformed her fury into appetite, chomping down on a piece of meat, “If only I had thought ahead, I would’ve brought an extra suitcase on this trip. We only packed one, and we couldn’t fit any clothes!”
In reality, she did manage to buy a few outfits, but obviously, that didn’t satisfy Zhao Mingyue’s shopping desire.
“Hmm.” Bai Yu nodded.
“Then, are you using your current body or your real body?” Zhao Mingyue’s eyes sparkled with anticipation.
“Real body.”
“Ah, why?!”
Feeling awkward under Bai Yu’s gaze, Zhao Mingyue chuckled sheepishly, “Fine, it’s the real body then!”
After a few more bites of lunch, Zhao Mingyue finally snapped back to reality. Why did she think it was a pity Bai Yu was using her real body instead of her ghostly form? If anything, Bai Yu’s true self was definitely cuter!
Somehow, it just felt more fitting to dress up Bai Yu in her real form. The ghostly body didn’t quite hit the mark.
After lunch, Zhao Mingyue sacrificed half an hour of her one-hour nap to dress up Bai Yu’s real body.
From makeup to hairstyle to clothing, one and a half hours flew by in a flash.
—
The afternoon was important for Zhao Mingyue, and it was the same for Lu Liangting.
This all began when he was on his way home, and his phone suddenly pinged with a message.
“We haven’t seen each other in a while, have we? I know you’ve been busy, but I hope you’re almost done. Come back when you get the chance! Conveniently, I just returned from Pinghai City as well. If you’re free, how about we meet up this afternoon?”
“Don’t rush to decline. I know what you’re thinking.”
“You have a male ghost next to you, someone you’re quite close with—a brother of sort.”
“Coincidentally, I have something good that could greatly boost your brother’s strength. After using it, he could be as prominent as Bai Yu, manifesting in broad daylight, as long as he can disguise himself well enough for no one to notice anything unusual.”
The message was from Shen Shuyun, who had managed to get her hands on something that could enhance a ghost’s abilities.
Bai Yu wouldn’t want it, and even if she did, she wouldn’t give it to him.
But it would be great for Lu Liangting, plus it would score him some brownie points!

Two updates tonight! I’ll stick to my word, and if I don’t meet it, I’ll do a handstand and split!
Please vote for me, sob sob!
By the way, we can finally apply for the back cover, the kind with a big illustration.
I’ll think about how to design it. If you have ideas, feel free to comment here!
