Chapter 242: Arranging a Ghostly Marriage for Old Yang
To be honest, hearing what Shen Shuyun had to say really got Old Yang’s heart racing.
Old Yang’s strength looked impressive now—after all, he was a Red-clothed ghost! If you compared him to the tasks he had done in the past, he would have been a powerhouse! Facing any BOSS would just be a walk in the park.
But all of that changed when he teamed up with Bai Yu.
The difficulty of the tasks shot through the roof—terrifying to an extreme! What he once thought of as a formidable Red-clothed ghost now appeared pretty mediocre.
At least, compared to the frequently appearing Evil Spirits and Evil Gods, the Red-clothed ghost wasn’t much to write home about.
Of course, this didn’t include Bai Yu.
Bai Yu was indeed in red, but she was one of a kind.
So, if there’s a chance, Old Yang really needed to get stronger, or who knows, he might end up getting killed any day now.
He couldn’t help it—the speed at which Bai Yu was growing was too fast!
As long as he stuck with her and Zhao Mingyue, he had to become more powerful!
After pondering for a moment, Lu Liangting chose to reply.
“This afternoon, is that okay?”
“Sure! I knew you wouldn’t refuse (heart emoji)!”
“See you in the afternoon.”
After hanging up, Lu Liangting decided to drive back to the city. The time was getting late, and he was about to meet Shen Shuyun for lunch.
You just knew she was going to throw some embarrassing request his way.
He couldn’t figure out why someone like Shen Shuyun, who had looks and talent, was so fixated on him. It wasn’t for money or power, and they hadn’t known each other long enough for any kind of romance to bloom.
“Old Yang, guess what message I just received?”
Lu Liangting looked up at the rearview mirror, glancing at the backseat.
There, a ghostly figure began to manifest, revealing itself as a man in his late twenties.
“What message? What’s that to me? The only ones texting you are girls! Are those girls related to me in any way?”
“Of course it’s related.” Old Yang’s claim was hard to dispute—most of the messages he got were indeed from girls.
“Oh? Then spill it! It can’t be my daughter; she’s only six!”
“It’s Shen Shuyun,” Lu Liangting replied casually. “She just texted me, asking to meet this afternoon. She’ll pick the spot. The perk is she’ll give me something—once a ghost uses it, their strength will get a major boost. That way, even if you show up in broad daylight, you won’t take too much damage.”
“Is it really that great?” Old Yang sat up straight. “You’re not pulling my leg, are you? If it’s that nifty, why not give it to your crush—I mean, your ghostly crush?”
He clearly meant Bai Yu, and Lu Liangting picked up on it.
“I think Bai Yu might not care for this thing.”
“Of course, she’s so amazing that she won’t be fighting me for anything.” Old Yang muttered, resting his hands on the car seat. “Wait a minute! I didn’t even mention who your crush was—did you just out yourself?”
“I just know you too well, I know what you’re thinking, and I’m teasing you.”
“You’re tough everywhere except your mouth. Anyway, with something so powerful, it can’t be a freebie, right? Anything that sounds too good to be true usually is, especially if it comes free. Free stuff is the most expensive thing on earth.”
Hearing this, Lu Liangting sighed. “I know, so I’m paying a hefty price.”
If Old Yang had revealed his true self at that moment, Lu Liangting would have noticed an odd expression on his face, especially in the way he looked at Lu Liangting, as if suspicion were written all over him.
Considering some of Lu Liangting’s recent moves, he had reason to doubt this guy’s intentions.
After a while of silence, Old Yang opened up again, “That’s it? I thought you’d say something like how I should repay you or something?”
“Nope. You’re my comrade. Helping each other grow stronger is normal, right?”
“That sounds more like it. If you had really mentioned repayment just now, I might start to think you’ve got a weird taste! With so many beautiful girls around you, why would you cling to me instead, huh?”
“What nonsense! I’ve got zero feelings for you.” Lu Liangting burst out laughing. “Who’d want to chase you? If anything, it’s YOU who looks a bit off.”
“Just think about it! I didn’t even bring it up; you were the one lost in thought! A normal person would think of comradeship; you went straight to gratitude!”
“Now that’s funny! If you didn’t keep going on about bathing things, would I even bring this up? I’ve got tons of female ghosts waiting for me. You think you’re prettier than them?”
“More female ghosts?” Lu Liangting mocked. “Give it a rest, Old Yang. You complain daily about being a pure Yang body, how your first love is just a hand-holding deal, and you can’t even collar a kiss! Meanwhile, you got married, and your first love abandoned you with a five-year-old daughter!”
“I…” Old Yang was momentarily speechless. “You’re right! That scheming j*rk threw her little sidekick at me and ran off with another guy, and even took my work compensation! She didn’t even leave me the rice cooker!”
“But does that stop me from finding other female ghosts?”
Hearing Old Yang’s complaint, Lu Liangting teased, “Didn’t enjoy yourself when you were alive? Now you have to enjoy your ghost life? But you don’t seem to have many ghost sisters around anyway. Since you’re always in my shadow, one moment of bragging and you’d have blown your cover.”
“I couldn’t before meeting you!”
“Alright, fine, okay. If I remember correctly, you were a complete mess when we met, just mindlessly going around killing everything.”
“I’m telling you, Lu Liangting, don’t bring this up! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be suffering like this! Being muddled was nice, where I couldn’t feel the pain. But ever since teaming up with you, I’ve come back to life; the pains from when I was alive hit me worse every day.”
“I didn’t do anything. You woke up all on your own.” Lu Liangting shrugged it off.
“You!” Old Yang instinctively raised his hand but slowly lowered it again.
This was a pretty hard thing to explain; his clarity was just a stroke of luck.
“Old Yang, let’s be real; if you’re lonely, I can find someone to arrange a ghostly marriage for you. Just tell me what age, body type, and looks you’re after.”
“Marry you, you say?”
“Don’t curse! I’m being sincere here. I don’t know if ghost marriages work, but hey, can’t hurt to try, right? Who knows, if it works, you won’t d*e a lonely ghost. Men should really stop being stuck on their first loves; forget about that rice cooker!”
Old Yang was silent for a moment. “Really?”
“Really! You’re my good comrade, how could I let you go unappreciated? Your daughter—I’ve arranged a school for her; for your elderly mother, I found the best doctors in the country for her hearing issues and eyesight. I also cleared your sister’s future tuition fees and send money to your household monthly. I even managed things with the village chief and town mayor. No one dares bully you anymore!”
“Thank you…”
“Well, your first love? I haven’t tracked her down yet; she’s definitely out of province working. As for that rice cooker… I doubt I can get that back.”
As he spoke, Lu Liangting parked the car outside a restaurant, opened the door, and walked in to find a private room in the back, ordering food.
Old Yang materialized as a slightly gloomy man with a mustache, dressed in a cheap suit. He wasn’t the tallest, just over 1.7 meters, and stood a half-head shorter than Lu Liangting. He was about average looking—not ugly but definitely not a model.
Sitting across from Lu Liangting, Old Yang suddenly felt emotional.
“Ah, if I’d been like you when I was younger! You’re sitting on a fortune and don’t even know it. If people knew your situation, they’d be crying envy! You’re wealthy, good-looking, and surrounded by pretty girls!”
“They love you madly. They won’t leave you like what happened to me, where she ditched me with a daughter and ran off with another guy, leaving me with a green hat and empty pockets. Back then, I was bedridden and couldn’t move, practically paralyzed.”
“Truly, a literal half-life—worth just that much!”
Old Yang gestured with his fingers, “Thirty grand.”
“What do I do for the rest of my life?”
“I have a five-year-old daughter, even if there’s no bl**d relation. I also have a seventy-year-old mother who’s nearly deaf and could go totally blind any day, and a sister in a prestigious university.”
“You know, I don’t blame her for leaving. It’s okay to leave a daughter behind, but could you at least not take that money? I really need it. Losing the rice cooker is nothing, but that money is important.”
“I don’t have much savings left. It’ll run out quickly,” Old Yang said, raising his hands. “I crawl out like this, bit by bit, making myself a little cart to lay on, controlling it with my hands.”
“Go cut some vines, make baskets, those sell for fifteen bucks each. Sometimes, I don’t even sell one in a whole day.”
“Do you want to see your daughter?” Lu Liangting suddenly asked.
“Do you have time?”
“Probably! I’ll be heading to Qiugang Village soon, and your home is in the next town over. I can swing by after my task. If all goes well today, you’ll be able to show your true form. Perfect timing since your sister is at home too. You can see her while you’re at it.”
Old Yang jumped up, hands shaking with excitement. “Thank you!”
“I thought you’d bring up repayment.”
“……”
“Just kidding.” Lu Liangting shook his head. “Sit down, and I’ll set up that ghostly marriage when we head back.”
